rumblings of something huge going on with SEGA

The rumor that Sega will codevelop Xbox2 with Microsoft is rampant on almost all the forums. And it seems like a reasonable rumor. Because Microsof has been trying to aqquire Sega. And Microsoft has partnered with Sega in the past, such as with Dreamcast and the bundling of Sega games with the Xbox. Also Dean Takahashi, in his book about the development of the Xbox, mentions that when Microsoft approached Sega about the Xbox, Sega offered to market the XBox. So ssomething like what the rumors says was attepted, but fell through. Forget what I said about the Sega/Sony stuff. The stuff about Sega getting "gobbled up" sounded like Sonic didn't like it.

To add fuel to the fire, from what I heard at the time it almost happened with Xbox1, but MS not being able to provide dreamcast compatability was apparently a deal breaker

At one time, SEGA was in heavy negotiations with MS about a collaboration, including potential busines integration. The general industry really knew little about this while it was happening, but the possibility had been so serious that SEGA released an announcement stating that the two companies had amicably decided to stay along their independent paths when the talks completely came to a close. MS continued gearing up for the Xbox launch on their own, and SEGA kept good relations which later helped form publishing agreements.

As for the surprise announcement at the E3 meeting: no, it's not about some major alliance.

I want a new console from SEGA.. Since the days of the DC ended ive lost my love of gaming :(

Heh, since the days of DC, it seems Sega has lost their love in games........

Their focus is more spread... Making games for one platform is easier then making three optimised versions. Look at Smilebit, they've made only Xbox games, and have made some extremely impressive games. (Ok, Smilebit is/was also one of Sega's top development studios :))

i wouldn't get my hopes to high about the sega anouncment.
an insider told me already it's nothing earthshattering.. but then again

Uh, very few of sega's games(besides sports) go multiplatform, so their focus isn't really move spread. They just make mostly crap, AM2, Smilebit,(overworks still there?), and AV still make fairly high quality stuff. Sonic team has been lacking, but they weren't that great on dreamcast in many people's opinions, and their one original game this generation was bad.... mainly because a lot of the level designs made no sense, it still had bad camera angles, and there was a complete lack of story or cohesion.....sonic and knuckles did a much better job of tieing the levels together.

Say if sega was to delvoped the dreamcast 2 what do you think the specs will be

here is some basics
2ghz cpu
256 mb or ram
gpu based on the nv 45-55 or the R500

Hmm, you could be right about the cpu and ram(very generic there, if you had said rdram or pentium 4 I'd say no), but why wouldn't sega go with powervr again?

Do I detect a 'hint' of sarcasm there? Especially given what Sony themselves demonstrated <bleagh>

FWIW, the more I hear (developer mailing list) about the PoS2, the more I'm stunned that anyone actually writes software for it.
I see that after all these years, the soul still burns...

Life used to be good. It's okay to cry. Let it out. LET IT OUT, MAN, FOR GOD'S SAKE.

I would like to know why because it's the successor to DC, that automatically means it will likely be inferior to PS3/XB2/GC2,

Dreamcast 2 would've been here by now, or this fall at the latest.

Sega President Soichiro Irimajiri who eariler had been in charge of Dreamcast R&D, became President, then stepped down as President to take over R&D for a Dreamcast sucessor, was probably working with Hitachi, PowerVR and NEC for the next console. I remember on Gaming-Age a few years ago, I think it was Deadmeat who mentioned NEC would be able to fab a 250 million transistor chip. speculation on what this single chip would contain was something like several SH-6 or SH-7 CPUs combined with a custom variant of a new PowerVR graphics processor(s)
(probably Series 4 or 5....not Series 3/KYRO) Now part of this was pure speculation & guesswork. it may or may not have been completely true. Although the part that was true, Sega *was* working on a Dreamcast sucessor. I had also read elsewhere on the internet that Sega wanted 100 times the performance of Dreamcast. that would've probably meant something like a N64-to-GC leap in power....

too bad there's no Dreamcast 2. but Xbox 2 should be even better. with all the engineering talent that is likely behind it (SGI/ArtX/Real3D/GE/MM/ATI/CagEnt).

I have high hopes for this thing...Xenon...Xbox 2...Xbox Next.

I thought PSO on GCN was great.

Yes, I'm bitter and I reserve the right to remain so :)

What I mean is that you see things like...

x*1 is not necessarily x, and x*0 is not necessarily 0. The bottom bit of
the mantissa is pretty random.

Perversely, 1*x IS always x, and 0*x IS always 0. So the order matters.
(er... it may be the other way around - I forget - not that you can usually
control the order when coding in C).

And this is just one of many examples of the fine features of the PS2. One wonders if they spent more money on spin than they did on development.
