I think by rpicing a high quality shooter at just 99 cents, they are really making the market murky for Indie Devs. People will start expecting bigger and better polished games for 99 cents now. The Big Fishes should not disbalance the market like this, and should stick to some pricing ethics. it becomes difficult for Indie devs to comepete with such a drastic reduce in price.
Why? Its an honest question, I'd just like to understand your logic behind it
Yeah, the golden age of making a million from a farting app are over...
Ha fucking ha. You can buy the World's Smallest Violin App for $0.99 and cry me a river while playing it.
Maybe the indies can prevail using their fabled Originality, Boldness, Flexibility and Creativity instead of just relying mostly on low labor costs due to living with their parents?
In any fields that goes from "wild west" to "established" the bar of quality rises, and large players exploit their experience and economies of scale. It happened with PC games, it happened with XBLA games, I don't see why iOS developers should expect somehow to avoid that natural turn of events.
Id's been through a couple of mobile games by now, including some on the iPhone, so they have a lot of data on sales and price related issues. It's not like they've just entered the market...
One thing that gives them some serious advantage though is that this game is using content created for Rage. any production starting from scratch would have to invest a lot of money in artists, but Carmack can get away with a few clever tools to convert their existing assets into this format.
Shading is perfectly right, it's more about the texture work.
Are they even using tone-mapping? RDR has way better lighting and that's a REAL open-world game. The cel-shading makes the look inconsistent as it's hard to tell whether they're going for a more realistic look or whether they're going for a cartoonish cel-shaded look. The game continues to look more and more dated everytime they show it.
