Quantum Break [XO] (by Remedy) *large images*

Ah! Was waiting for this one. no AA could mean 2 things:
1 - Reconstruction is always on/the base of the engine.
2 - There's no reconstruction on PC (similar to how the PC version of Alan Wake wasn't using the in-engine upscaling tech of the x360 version) but there would be no way to enable AA via the drivers given that it's a UWA...
So it's most probably 1...which would mean that 3840x2160 isn't really 3840x2160...but they could be reconstructing from a higher res... either way the GPU's are going to turn into heaters..

Reporting what I posted in the DF thread:

Remedy's official response:

Very nice 4xMSAA would lead to a very clean image even if the game will be a bit soft during motion (should be relatively sharper when not a lot of motion due to temporal reconstruction as Clukos has shown). I heartily approve. Anything that uses 4xMSAA (or some equivalent) gets my approval. I absolute hate games that forgo good AA (too many games still release with FXAA /vomit). A game at 4k with FXAA still looks like crap.

Of all the games I've seen this gen, this one has my eyebrows standing up. There is just so much shit going on per frame and being able to see these cutscenes in real time (i.e. with the use of the camera rotation) with all the 100s of particles and debris flying around all lit and shadow casting is very very impressive to me. I can't believe Remedy was able to squeeze this game's visuals out on the X1. Seeing it on a PC @ 4k is going to pretty much going to give me that "Crysis 1" vibe (i.e. am I really seeing this in a video game?).

Hmmm no let's not re-write history please. The game has always looked exactly like it does now and many people have always commented on the softness of the IQ and other LOD shortcomings. The PC version has never been publicly shown before the latest preview events 2 weeks ago and nobody outside of the press attending has seen it. As a matter of fact the PC version hasn't gone gold yet! What happened is the following:

- Wow game looks good. But IQ is strangely soft.
- Wow Remedy are wizards! Can't believe they are achieving all these effects, GI etc on an Xone
- PC version is announced: Damn the PC version will look insane if this is how it already looks on Xbox.
- DF article about them not having a clue what and how things are being rendered..but 720P! Or 900P?! We don't know..but lets get some traffic.
- QB looks like shit! Ah Remedy are lame blablabla..
- THE INTERNET

Yep the game always looked like this from the very start. Great image quality (now we know why: because of 4xMSAA + past frames reconstruction stuff) but super blurry because of 720p + low resolution buffers.

It's not like we didn't already pixel count the game at 720p several times before the DF article... the first time being 17 BLOODY MONTHS AGO. :yep2:

Great analysis by @Clukos BTW

Not a single thing in Quantum Break resembles 4xMSAA, sorry

Nooo your pixel counter 2.0 tag flair is going to go into contention soon! Use those eyes more!!

Sure the game has ghosting and a soft quality, but it also has the least amount of aliasing I have ever seen in a 720p title.

It isn't going to resemble titles you have seen running 720p 4x MSAA because of the blending of 4 previous frames.

Slightly off topic, but I wanted to share a link with you guys I found in a DF article about Ryse son of Rome. I'm sure a lot of you have read it before, but skimming through it really brings to mind what Remedy is doing with QB.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/digitalfoundry-tech-focus-does-pixel-count-matter

Eh, pixel count definitely matters but IQ (image quality) matters more(these two are connected most of the time, but not always). Perfect example is Rise of the Tomb Raider which ran at 1080p on X1 but at times looks worse than Ryse at 900p because of sub-pixel crawl and shader shimmering everywhere (they only used FXAA iirc). The best case scenario is high resolution and temporal stability (The Order, The Division) but i still understand the route Remedy went if it means that the game wouldn't look as good, or run as well as it is now, because it's really clean during motion.

I also think we're getting new footage next week (chapter 2?). Hopefully they won't spoil too much, game apparently has 5 chapters and 4 TV episodes in between them.

So there is an AA option and it's just On-Off? Interesting :yep2:

Glad to see lock to 30 fps, if my card can't handle 1080p60 maxed i'll lock it.
