PSP Impressions

So, here's the quote from someone who has both:

PSP on min (brightness) is sliiightly dimmer than the (DS) top screen, I think, but sharper. On medium it's brighter than DS, and on high or super-high it smokes the DS completely.

better than PS2 graphics on PSP
Noone ever promissed that, and why would anyone think so, when the specs unveiled on the first ever mention of PSP, suggested oterwise.

It seems, that the PSP support AAC audio (codeveloped by Sony) in the MP4 file but not as a standalone audio file. Also, it supports PNG images in the game saves but not at the image viewer.
Why? :?:

Sony prefers ATRAC?

Maybe they're scared of buffer overflows?

Yeah, a dead format...

But what about with the PNG support?

Still very alive in Sony's products at least.

But i think that is not enough.

Why not? it's used in Sony's products, they are not forcing you to use it for anything else. And it's very easy (although time consuming) to convert whatever format to ATRAC. So i don't see where the problem is....

I've seen that one in passing before, itt's very nice, especially considering it's actually smaller than many of those awful tape walkmans of bygone eras.

Not THAT expensive either for being a Sony product (and it'll be much cheaper up on Tottenham Court Road of course... :p), and the 3D view on Sony's site looks nice too. Bit slow on my CPU tho, but still nice.

I store my music in popular formats and i don't want to lose more quality with the conversion and as you said it takes time.
Sony is basically forced by the consumers to start include native MP3 support some of their products.

ATRAC is favoured because it's a inhouse developed codec including SCMS (copy management). MP3 doesn't. It's sucks, yeah, but that's the way it is.

Cool thanks. So in battery mode 50% brightness would be step #2.
If you mean 50% of max brightness, that's step #1. I know minimum brightness on battery is 80 cd/m^2 and maximum is 180, so Step #2 is I guess 130 or so. When plugged into the AC adaptor it goes up a bit more to 200 cd/m^2.

Here's some pictures of PSP and DS that don't seem to jive quite as well with what's been posted so far.

While it might be quite a bit sharper than DS, it doesn't appear that much brighter in the photos, (despite the fact that the reviewer seemed to rave about the screen).

Can anyone explain this? Would it be because of the flash on the camera or something? Could we also infer that the camera used may have also played a role in the earlier screenshots? Perhaps the truth about brightness here is somewhere in the middle.

having used both for a while i can say that the ds screens are the same brightness as the psp screen .
