PSP Impressions

There's only one person who has a problem accepting that. And we all suspect simple facts or rational arguments aren't going to dissuade his crusade.

OK, I don't want to poison this thread with more DS stuff, but I will ask people from Japan on GA to flat out say what PSP screen looks like compared to DS, and on what brightness setting.

The Chinese guy making comparision photos seems valid, he's not using any AC adapters as evidenced by this picture below. I mean it's been known for a while that PSP has better, more brighter screen. Why does anyone have a problem accepting that?

Yes it's been known that's why I said PSP screen is bigger and brighter than NDS screen. I'm not denying that. My question is why are those NDS screens so dim? It doesn't look like THAT on my NDS. I must have a special limited edition one.

Again which forum member started comparing LCD screens with screenshots? If you want to keep this a PSP thread then don't compare NDS screens that have no connection with reality. Is it really that difficult to grasp?

my first impressions are that the PSP appears to be pretty cool. brighter screen, more features, thinner, and narrower than the NDS. i've never been a pocket gamer so I've never owned a gameboy before, but with all the features of the PSP i might actually consider getting one.

Do you have a NDS? Do you have a PSP?

PSP screen is bigger and brighter nobody is arguing that, but if you believe the NDS screen is as bad as those first screenshots demonstrate

Nope, don't have either. Seen a few DS's in stores though and the screen sure didn't impress me. Better than the SP screen by a slight amount but nothing too great (better visibility from an angle mainly since the frontlighting does funny things viewed at angles).

Really why bother complaining about my statement when you say "PSP screen is bigger and brighter nobody is arguing that". To me the screen is better not because of pictures but because as we already know that its larger, brighter, and DPI is higher...

They were pics from a Chinese guy who owns both systems. Clearly a lot of people are interested in some of the basic comparisons between the two. Now, unless you can prove that this guy is on some mission to make the DS look bad, mayb you should let it go. You blame some phantom poster for making a crazy comparison to the DS, but it's been you who's been running fulltime damage control so far. I don't think anyone made a big deal out of the pics, it's what everyone knew from TGS. The PSP has a better screen, big deal. The pics aren't gonna be 100% accurate, but they do offer a decent representation of what to expect. Fowler or someone else over at GAF took pics of the two side-by-side with different screen settings on the PSP. Even on the dimmest setting, the PSP's screen is still a little brighter than the DS's. Is that at all suprising? It's a good screen, deal with it. PEACE.

PSP and NDS are definitally going to get Megadrive back into portable gaming.

haven't had a portable since i bought an Atari Lynx (II) in 1991.

If you want to hear my take on this, here it is:

The guy making these photos must be having his camera set on 'auto everything'.
With such camera, during the daylight, camera's exposure will be set to low. Light coming from the screens of both devices will not have much time to expose the imaging sensor chip in the camera. Due to short exposure, neither screen will probably appear as bright as they are in the reality, but picture should be good to compare the relative difference in brightness between the two.

I got a little bit confused, because this presentation:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1639233,00.asp

seemed to indicate there would a single SoC (= nerd speak for system on a chip) in 90 nm doing pretty much everything. So CPU, GPU, H.264 (= MPEG4 AVC decode), this virtual mobile engine, which is nothing more (IMHO) than a vertex/geometry/matrix/vector cruncher etc into one single chip. Now I see two of these big ICs.. what happened ???

Are you surprised? This is SONY we're talking about here. Smoke and Mirrors...

Is there a reason why the NDS in the second shot with a lot of ambient light is as bright as the PSP in the first shot in total darkness? Shouldn't the shot of NDS in the dark look A LOT brighter than that of the same NDS in the light according to reality?

What's the excuse now?

I rest my case.

OMG! You're right! DS screen >>> PSP screen!!!

OMG!!! Dust inside the PSP screen!! Dead pixels!!!
...and the PSP is also blurry as hell (not just the screen, but the WHOLE PSP!!! ). You can hardly make out the SONY logo on the gear, how can you play that if you hardly can see the buttons!!!!

On another subject, off topic, but as this has already went that way...;
Backpacks banned in some US schools, I didn't know that! How do the kids now carry their books, pens, calculators... :?
Banning backpacks because of shooting accidents in scools.... that just sounds a bit odd. If a kid wants to shoot someone at school, would they not be able to bring some smaller weapon that does not require a backpack to carry. Shouldn't they ban bringing weapons in school instead of backpacks??? Doesn't make sense to me at all.

Here's a news flash for you: the PSP's screen also looks a lot better in real life than in those photographs.

PSP in real life >> PSP in photos
DS in real life >> DS in photos
PSP in photos >> DS in photos
PSP in real life >> DS in real life

Now, give it a rest!

Oh, and yes, I do think the dust inside PSP screen is indeed photoshopped
While it is even likely there are some PSP units that are faulty and have dust inside the screen, that picture does look a bit suspiscious. First the dust is a weird wriggly (or two wrigglies) that look too much like they're done with PS brush and blurred... The "artist" should at least have left it with one wriggle, instead of making another smaller wriggle above it thinking it would look more like actual dust (or whatever crap it's supposed to look like)

Just think about it, if someone (not too skilled in PS) wants to make something representing some "dirt", first thing he does is make this wriggly ~ shape with mouse

Here's a news flash for you: the PSP's screen also looks a lot better in real life than in those photographs.

1. Do you have one?

2. Does PSP in real life look a lot brighter than those in the screenshots?

Just curious...

how is the build quality? sony is going to shit lately in this regard, especially with their laptop line

There seems to be an issue with the buttons on PSP. IGN and a few other sites have mentioned stuck buttons.

It seems to me you don't know what you're talking about. Izumi Kawanishi has presented the PSP processor and it is, in fact, a 90nm Low-K IC which is a pseudo-SoC, sans the storage.

What, exactly, has inspired you to come to the conclusion that it's not what was presented?

And thank you for clearing up what SoC means for us. We also know what H.264 is here.

I'm not surprised you jumped on th bandwagon with some anti-Sony bullshit post. What exactly is smoke and mirrors? That SCE has been shipping products on the 90nm process since this time last year? Are we still holding on to that initial, fallicious reporting that Chipworks proved wrong?

Time to move on bud, I know you're running out of things to bash, 90nm is gone, 4GHz is gone.. but, hey, I hear you can still bash the PSP screen for another week!

Perhaps the fact that there are two big chips soldered to the PCB? :?

I think it's just pure curiosity as to what that second chip is for, if not performing functions the presented single-chip should cover,
