PS4, Xbox One: Indie publishing

Wouldn't it be easiest to teach game programming on iOS, Android, Windows or OSX? Pretty much every student is going to have one if not several of those already.

Glamour , my friend. If one college boasts of their students publishing on the ps3/4/vita while the rest are throwing their games into iOS and android's overcrowded app stores, it makes a difference. Also, gives a tremendous boost to the students when they know if they work hard enough their games can make it onto the ps4. Its just an idea.

So, like I asked, what happened to the vita $99 licenses? Did they take off?

Looks like the hidden Xbox One "Developer Settings" in the system screen has been found. It's a simple controller button combination & not a hack. It allows developers to use the retail system as a dev kit, most likely for Xbox@ID members...

Be careful though with the settings though. You could brick it according to XboxOneDev on Reddit:

Please don't mess with anything here for the time being, especially the sandbox ID. You risk putting your box into a boot loop.

They said this functionality wouldn't come until next year, but could it already be working?

Sony aren't being anything like as generous as we hoped. Those devkits given out for free have to be returned by the end of this calendar year. If you're working on a project and need to finish it, it'll be ÂŁ700 (or maybe Euros, not sure) for a debug kit, and (or?) ÂŁ3000 for a devkit.

Those are the advantages of the Xbox One being a "free" developer kit itself.

Nice, I wonder if the xb1 will be able to compete with Steam when it comes to indie games. So far Steam has walked all over the consoles in the indie scene but looks like that may now change. Good times especially since I find myself playing more indie games lately than anything else, they seem genuinely more original and interesting to me rather that yet another sequel to yet another AAA game I've played a dozen times already.

Probably not. You still have to apply and be accepted as an ID@Xbox developer, though Greenlight has it's own challenges. And ID@Xbox still requires day one parity. You can't build momentum platform by platform like many indies do now, starting on iOS or PC and slowly expanding to new platforms as they can. Ironically that clause pushed Vlambeer to sign a 1 month exclusive with PlayStation for Nuclear Throne because preexisting contracts get a waiver on that requirement for now. Had they joined ID@Xbox first they would have had to delay the PC and PS4 versions until the Xbox One version was ready. Since they just got their Xbox One devkits this week that would have been a huge delay.

I don't think the parity applies to pc, mobile, etc, I believe it only applies to the console market. You can release on phones, tablets, pc's, etc first without issue. You can read about that here: http://indiegames.com/2013/08/microsoft_lifts_veil_on_idxbox.html

That's great news, of course, and it's obvious they had been thinking about this for a long time. You don't suddenly wake up one day and decide to give support to that without an infrastructure and the console was meant to be a dev kit.

However, being the same company which created the highly popular and acclaimed XNA tools, the console still doesn't allow (independent) indie developers without a publisher to publish their games.

Warframe creators want to program their game for the Xbox One:

http://www.oxm.co.uk/58844/digital-extremes-would-love-to-see-warframe-on-xbox-one/

"We would love to see Warframe on Xbox One, the ball is in Microsoft's court with regards to allowing titles on their system that come from an independent developer and not an established publisher," Braun commented in a brief statement.

Speaking to OXM at the Kodu Kup finals this month, Lionhead's Gary Carr hinted at further announcements. "I certainly know that Microsoft want to talk at future press events about their relationships with indies. I can't really talk about that, but they're very passionate about building a strong relationship with indie development - indie development is the future."

Azbat mentioned this days ago, and with good reason. I had pnetly XNA games I had paid for. Antigrav Racing Championship was one of my favourites. Simple but fun, and the closest thing to F-Zero the Xbox 360 ever had.

With the current approach I could never see a game like that on the Xbox One.

You only have to be accepted temporarily while you still can't use your own console as a devkit...

Once that's option is up, anyone can send games... Of course, the games themselves will have to be approved, but that checks only if there's no infringement on the rules...

The "Use your own console as a devkit" thing is still under the aegis of ID@Xbox from what I understand. I haven't seen anything that suggests they're actually going open submission ala iOS or Android. Everything still goes through the ID@Xbox program and that involves applying and being accepted.
