[PS3] Uncharted 2

I just checked futureshop.ca and it says "In-store availability," so Canadians can pick theirs up today. Will probably pick it up on my lunch break or right after work.

My Gamestop has it in-store today too. Got a text message from them yesterday.

I'm at chapter 5(? The Dig). Very similar to the first game. Controls have been tightened up a bit. Combat is basically the same, as are the enemies and weapons. Melee combat is a lot better. Not much to mention here other than if you like the combat in the first one, you'll like the combat in this one. I'm looking forward to some of the scenarios later in the game (train etc).

Graphics are nice, and Naughty Dog has some great artists. They know technology only goes so far and they're very good at putting high-res and low-res textures in the right places. They hide low geometry very well. That isn't meant to be an insult. All console games suffer from low geometry in terrain, and low-res textures in places, and Uncharted 2 hides it very well. It has some very nice texture work in the places where you'll notice it. As for the graphical improvements, everyone has discussed those to death, and we all know what they are. I'll just say that it gets a graphical A+ in my books, though you will walk through some rooms and areas that will not blow you away.

Too many cutscenes or non-interactive sequences early on for my liking. Personal preference here. There is no way I could every play a game like Metal Gear. Still, the voice acting and animation is solid. Not a huge fan of the script, but it is better than 99% of the other games out there. Story wise, I'm not particularly engaged, but it has a basic storyline that is passable for a story-lite action film. I'd say it is well written for a video game, but I don't understand the claims that is equal to a good movie.

I'm disappointed the platforming sequences have not been improved. They're, so far, identical to the original. They opening sequence is very nice to watch, but the gameplay is a failure in that sequence. It is not challenging at all. It is very obvious where you are supposed to climb/jump and you basically cannot fail, as far as I can tell. So far the game is platforming and combat set pieces, and the platforming, to me, is as uninteresting as the original. Hopefully later in the game the two will be integrated together in more interesting ways. Right now, the platforming is just a novelty, because most of the jumps are scripted so you will jump the correct distance and grab everything perfectly. There is absolutely zero excitement in the platforming.

The puzzles are pretty lame so far, especially an early puzzle where you have to deactivate an alarm before opening a door.
A junction box with a big red switch inside the room with the protected door? Really?

For me, this game will really hinge on maintaining a level of excitement that the first one couldn't. The first one dragged on in the second half, and really failed to keep me interested. It also had a horrible horrible finale. If this one can keep building towards a solid finale, it will be one of my more highly regarded action games.

Didn't realize NaughtyDog had a live chat this afternoon:

Mostly behind-the-scene tidbits, inspiration and motivation type of questions.

[Comment From Robert]
I see you thanked studios like Infinity Ward and Guerrilla Games in the Uncharted 2 credits. It confused a number of gamers. Why did you throw a shoutout for those studios into the credits of your own game? Thanks!

TravisMcIntosh-NaughtyDog: We're good friends with Sony Santa Monice (GOW III), and we share ideas all the time, they've helped us out many times in the past with tech demonstrations and we've returned the same. I can walk there in 10 minutes. We don't really grab code or assets though, mainly ideas.

Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog:
Re: thanking other developers. We try to be quite open with our technology and our process. We exchanged technology and ideas with other developers. We wanted to make sure we thanked everyone that helped us out in some way.

Really starts to pick up at Chapter 6. That's a great chapter. Chapter 7 is looking to be good too. I'd still like it if the platforming didn't feel so automated. The platforming sequences all show off some nice environments, but they're really nothing in the way of gameplay. They could be a little shorter.

UDF really shines after the mediocre first half. I loved the platforming, gunplay, puzzles and Spaniards.

In fact the absence of Spaniards or something equivalent will probably make the game feel incomplete however great the sequel is.

I couldn't agree less ;)

That he's played. Though I think there are a few outlets that may have said 'best SP campaign ever' (maybe Sessler at G4?). Which sorta sucks for Uncharted 3 and all other games in the future, they may as well not even try.

Got to chapter 6 before calling it a night. Simply the best game I've ever played. Only glitch is that the AA is sometimes not enough, but it's mostly good. Also, the museum guards were way too polite, in real life you'd be hearing a lot more cursing from them :) I liked the "museum is closed" line...

Just got to chapter 6 and called it a day. One of the best video game intros ever, one of the most mundane stealth segments ever, and the shooting feels more intense and less boring than in the first one. Overall, I'm liking this a lot more than the first one.

Little tidbit I noticed, the nice looking snow displacement from the first teaser appears to be gone.

I'm at the start of the game, in the jungle, right after the museum. The graphics and art overall are awsome :)
But is it me, or does the game feel somewhat easier than the first one? And the shooting, especially with the handguns (I alway try to use only handguns in UC) fees a bit more random... I can shoot a bit further from an enemys head, and score a headshot... Perhaps I should try it in hard mode and not normal. It seems though as if crushing will be UC1s hard... In normal Drake can take a lot of damage, to the point that I haven't seen the screen turn to black and white yet.
Up to now, the game seems like the best thing that the PS3 has to offer, so great job ND!

First levels are trying to tease you in - it gets hard, don't worry. I remember you have hard and crushing going forward.

About the stealth section - I quite liked it. It teased you into the machanics and had a great atmosphere.
When i turned the corner on the roof and saw the town below...I could NOT believe that they were all detailed 3D models! Insane.

PS. One of the best starts to a video game - I was saying "oh shit" and giggling like a little girl all through it.

PS. If you'd tried Crushing on the co-op in the beta - it's almost impossible with three people. So never fear!

The town from the rooftop looked really great. When zoomed with the gun you could see the roads and cars parked!
The start was simply stunning, I can only imagine what this engine would look like with realistic textures! Not that I mind the art direction the game has, it suits it fine.
I was thinking I should start the game again at hard, but I think I'll give it a chance since it looks like it's giving the player an easy time to get familiar with the controls etc... I mean, in the jungle portion, you had infinite grenades, I can only assume that this was done to familiarise the player with the throwing mechanics, something that made that fight very easy.

Took a break from Demon's Souls to play U2. I thought I'd be underwhelmed but the experience was solid and pleasant. I am currently in Chapter 6.

I feel that gun fight is better than U1 (Not cheap anymore). The platforming is nice, not too difficult or frustrating like some LBP levels, but just enough to encourage experimentation. I like how the movie and gameplay interleave each other. It's similar to MGS4 in the sense that I feel like playing in a movie. The story seems better developed this time compared to U1. By chapter 6, it has more twists and more mysteries than the first one, like
"What's with the deads' black teeth ?"
.

The characters are adorable as ever. It's 2:30am now. Got to catch some sleep !

Anyone know how many chapters? I'm on chapter 8, and chapter 7 seemed to be extremely short.

For anyone that is good at shooters, I'd recommend hard from the start, because so far it isn't very difficult. Normal would be way too easy.
