[PS3] Uncharted 2

He mentions "why do games not concentrate on environment and wall textures" when Uncharted and the developer, ND, are one of the few games that actually do.

But it it's a mix for Uncharted. some high-res textures, some med-res and lots of low-res. It's just harder to notice in a third person FPS. Like mass Effect where lots of textures look amazing in third person but once you get into first peson and look closer they are quite crappy.

Where's the low-res? It's true the AF in Uncharted isn't great, meaning from afar the textures aren't as impressive. But every surface you go upto in Uncharted is high-res (except one tree I found that they had forgotten)

Yet if you walk up to most of those objects they are high-res textures. MOST are high-res. Rather than MOST are low-res.

And let me make it clear - Uncharted is the very opposite.

In spite of previous Mod hints, giving infractions, and explicit mod posts, this thread isn't getting any better. We (the mod team) are quickly losing patience. I'm going to step in and edit some and delete a lot of posts because apparently you guys need some hand-holding on what you should and shouldn't do. Some of these warranted infractions. I hope this will be enough to get back on track of discussing Uncharted 2.

WRT this post: first of all, the implication that another member is a troll is infraction-worthy.

Secondly, unless it is exceedingly obvious (say someone wants to argue that SD resolutions have more vertical lines than HD resolutions) ALL points are open for debate. Proper courses of action would be: a) asking for proof that supports their arguments, b) a tecnical rebutal, or c) ignoring it.

There are many aspects of Uncharted you can safely troll. Texture work is just not one of them. Give it up already.

Might want to continue the Uncharted discussion in the Drake's Fortune thread.

In any case, UDF has no first person view. Should there be one, no one here can say what ND will do to improve the experience. As it stands, the game has great textures. As Nebula put it, if it's harder to notice some low res textures in third person view, there is no need to waste resources by putting a high res one. The first game has rather rich texture work (variety and layer-wise). The second one should at least be on par.

I don't see how he was "trolling". He was just giving his opinion on the matter and of course, not everyone will agree. With that said, I completely agree with his opinion.

I dont agree with the way he phrased it. He's making it sound as if Uncharted has lots of low res textures and only a few high res ones. That's a little misleading.
I was under the impressions Uncharted had mostly 512x512 textures with some 1024x1024 in key areas like the fortress. Most of its prominent textures look nice, certainly on par with anything in that "other" third person shooter.

Of course you'll find some ugly 256x256 textures in some obscure corner, but they arent common and they are not prominent.

that is the case for absolutly all games existing.even if you past heavily tiled highfrequency noise NM into base diffuse.

Please...............Uncharted has the most highres textures for environments to grace a console game !
also the best cover-system controls, extremely smooth and nimble.

But this thread is for Uncharted 2 , and yes the new shots did make me feel a little "blurry" too.
there seems to be a new glow all over the place which i don't like.......considering that the outdoor lighting felt superb in Uncharted 1 ! but I guess, a game goes through a lot of Art iterations before being released. lokk at KZ2, the level shown last year looks completely different now, though i liked the grey look more, kinda looked very "Filmic" then.

Mod Edit: removed useless and off-topic part.

There's the simple case that Uncharted has some of the most impressive textures in console games (Gears 2 is another) - no arguments there. And the majority of the game has these high-res textures.

However, the game has a downside in its low AF (needs Heavenly Sword's 8xAF), and apparent streaming of high-res textures when you get closer - meaning textures that are further away are not nearly as sharp. This is a clever way to save on resources....ND appears to have solved this for U2 (IGN describes the environments as much sharper into the distance). Only time will tell.

I know about the filtering thus why I posted screens that show near POV textures. If U2 has AF 8x enabled then that should make quite a difference for how distant textures are percieved.

Come on guys. This isn't good for your karma.

Lets keep things civil. A forum has low transmission rates for subtlety and irony .

Where did you get those figures ? (I am just curious)

In any case, resolution is only one aspect. The team hand painted the textures so that they are varied and nice. The thing I look forward to in U2 most is the treasures. ND didn't make them into trophies, entitlements or Home items in the first game. I hope they do something about it in the second one.

Some treasure hunting competition or co-op would be nice too !

Bah... I don't mean pure numbers trophies like that. I meant make every little treasure I found in Uncharted into something special. :)

I am greedy I know, but the treasures look authentic and expertly done.

The usual "sports statistics" trophies don't do a thing for me. :p

This game's visuals are notably more polished than the first which are easily still in the top 5 for console visual IMO. It's great to see the the PS3 starting to really shine. Seeing this new level of console graphics approaching gets me so excited. Between Killzone, this and Heavy Rain there's is a whole new level of visuals on the near horizon for us.

Back to uncharted 2:

Do you think that we will be restricted to this cold world alone? Somebody earlier said no, but i dont see why Drake cannot travel, after all, last time we went flying to different islands etc.. I really liked uncharteds jungle world and would be sad to see it all been replaced by snow.
