PS3 sales

PS3 will be Sony's last console: Analyst

Some analysts went one step further, taking Hirai's succession as a harbinger of doom. No one was more pessimistic than Nomura Securities' Yuta Sakurai, who made the astounding prediction that the PlayStation 3 would be the last console Sony, the current console market-share leader, would ever make. :devilish:

Well technically thats true, as the PS4 has such incredible 4th dimensional powers it has actually already been made.

ok I've probably worn that out now... ;)

Japanese sales according to Media Create / Joystiq:

Nov 6-12 81,639
Nov 13-19 42,099
Nov 20-26 32,662

Total: 156,400

Bill Gates seems to be right about sales comparable to their rounding errors. Just what's going on there? Something must be seriously wrong with the manufacturing...

Well we knew Sony had issues. However there is a possibility that they are holding on to some stock for the Xmas holidays. Either that or there really aren't enough machines.

From a marketing point of view, Sony should hold on to some stock, to make sure they have a bit more units for Xmas. The problem they will have is that there still won't be enough units for xmas to satisfy a lot of demand.

Hold on some stock? Why? We are ~20 days away from christmas. Not everyone is buying presents in the last minute you know. The christmas buying season is already in full swing. Holding back now is the last thing Sony should do now.

Or maybe Sony's priority is US at the time. Japanese will buy it anyway after the Christmas. Sony have to fight with MS in US atleast now until holiday season is over.

If you look at the last 10 years, November has always been very low in sales compared to Sept, Oct and obviously December which sees a huge spike every year. Blame that on consumers waiting for xmas, or companies holding stock, it doesn't matter.

The numbers Laa-Yosh posted are from November. When we have the numbers for December we'll be able to comment.

I did say "there is a possibility" after all, i didn't say "they ARE holding back stock". We'll see.

I disagree, the spike begins in november. The sales ratio is usually around 1:2, november sales are roughly 200% of october and december sales are 400%. At least my graphs show this...

Mmm it depends on the year, but from the figures i have, Novmber is lower than Sept and Oct...

Not that it matters, Sony are obviously supply limited now anyway, and the figures i have aren't affected by low supply. My point is that from a marketing point of view, it would make sense to hold back a little bit for December. Like it would also make sense not to! It's not an absolute science after all. :D

Not sure what numbers you're looking at, but October usually doesn't spike at all, the spike happens in Nov/Dec, and usually Nov is about 1/2 of Dec, just as Laa Yosh says. Look at PS2 sales from any year...

That's what i'm looking at... Unless i'm looking at the wrong place... anyway who cares, i'm off to the gym

Strange. The only common exercise I have on Saturday nights is one-armed lifting, and with a weight of approximately 0.5 kg... ;)

OK. From your comment I simply concluded that you ment the situation now and not in november.

sorry

Food for thought:

If MS sells 8 million Xboxes by the end of 2006, and Sony sells 1 million PS3s, then in four years, Sony has to sell 150,000 more units in every month than MS - just to catch up to the X360.

If MS gets to ten million, that number goes up to about 187K.

Interesting, huh?

No, not really. Considering that the loss could be made up in Japan alone. 150,000 units every month means 37,500 a week. That difference could be made up in Japan if Sony finds a way to make more PS3s.

The only thing stopping Sony right now is Sony themselves. As bad as that sounds.

if Sony finds a way to make more PS3s.

That's the first problem here. And keep in mind that for the following few months they're still probalby going to be selling less PS3s than Xboxes, so the actual difference may increase for a while longer.

The second problem may be the price. There may come a point where Sony could manufacture more PS3s, but the demand wouldn't be there at the current price point - and they'd still be at a loss. And even if they'd be willing to trade the short term loss of a price cut for the long term effects of a larger user base, they may simply not be in the financial situation to do it.
Some people already believe that Sony doesn't have enough cash, because of low PS2 software sales and problems in other areas like the battery recall. I don't have a clue about the business side, but it -may- become a problem.

IMO, the more interesting numbers are the North American-specific ones. Everyone knows that Japan is a disaster for MS and a strength for Sony. But if MS can take a region from Sony, that's interesting. MS stands a good chance at that with their lead and the momentum that leads give.

Yep, they can do that in just Japan.

Although, one has to wonder how well the PS3 will do in Japan, due to the high price and competition from Wii. 150k/month might be asking a lot.

I dont think you can fairly compare 360 on a WW basis though. ms will be happy, nay ecstatic to "win" NA this gen I think.

Oh yeah MS really should beat Sony in NA now given the circumstances. Like Laa-Yosh said with the PS3 price and production issues I can't see why they won't.
