PS3 production problems continue?

While lacking any new information the article seems to suggest that the problems are not completely solved.

Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp., which slashed its profit forecast yesterday, said it may not reach this year's shipment target for the PlayStation 3 game console because of a parts shortage in the Blu-ray high-definition disc drive.

.....................

``The honest answer is it's more of a target'' for PlayStation 3 shipments, Jack Tretton, co-chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said yesterday in an interview. ``Clearly we've had production issues.''

If true (and the quote + past history gives this a bit of support considering how some past "baseless" comments from Bloomberg have been at least partially accurate) it is not a surprise. Shortages will be the name of the game for a while, even without production woes.

Well, given the direct quote from Sony's Jack Tretton, one doesn't really need to rely on Bloomberg. I suppose it's possible that they'll hit their "target", as these things do sometimes happen. Just not often, particularly after the run-up of issues this pre-launch ramp has faced.

More likely the question is just how badly they're going to miss, and given those issues we're all very aware of, it's hard to view that quote as anything but a conscious effort to prepare the community to be disappointed once again on the early volume question, and not by an inconsequential amount.
