[PS3] Killzone 2

Replaying sp campaign.
Man, what a great game! Graphics still top notch, style and art my absolute favorite...but the best are the epic set pieces...after this long time playing sp, I can still remember all encounters and epic battles!

Still one of my favorite fps this gen...

I'm still convinced there must have been some sort of competition over at Guerilla games to come up with the most bland and least likeable bunch of protagonists.

I always thought you were never really supposed to root for the ISA, so that a future game put you in the Helghast role as you retake Vekta and repay the ISA for their betrayal.

Agreed, but that was always going to be pointless. Rico is way beyond redemption, he is just a meat head that epitomises the nature of the ISA.

I liked both KZ2 and 3.
Definately will be there for next game, would be cool if we were Helghast and worked for Visari's daughter in the next game.. :)

But this is imo the strong point in Killzone 2: the stars are not the characters, but the presentation and the set pieces and epic battles! As I said, I can remember all the encounters, just got Visari Place back from the Higs...

In Killzone3 they want some character development and 'story'....well, I don't care...because of this, they forget the remarkable set pieces and encounters...except this big machine thing and one other battle , I can't remember an encounter in Killzone 3...

Also, I like the gritty atmosphere in K2 much better. The, what the devs call, 'analogous looks' with all the postprocessing and motion blur is really great...due to the mostly dark scenes, special effects such as explosions and muzzle flashes are way more pronounced and impressive, combined with all the particle and debris flying around - great looking at the screen and causing mayhem :)

If they didn't do such a shit job with the characters and the story, you'd probably remember both the characters and the enounters. I certainly remember all the encounters from the Uncharted games despite liking the characters very much.

Yeah kinda agree on that, KZ2 was truly one of a kind shooter this gen. Everything in it just comes together so well with so much volume. I miss those volumetric particles, explosions, muzzle flash, per pixel motion blur and dat grittiness. KZ3 was too clean, too sharp for its own good and it kinda lost its unique killzone feel due to that fact.

Just read through the last few posts and in a frenzy of nostalgia whipped out the PS2 and Killzone and blasted my way through that. I still think the LMG's are far better in the original and the Helghast are more threatening somehow. And using the Flak Cannons in the park to chew through the ranks is so much fun!!

About half way through Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 sits next. Definitely my favourite FPS's of this gen but very close with Resistance. I guess the next battle will be on the Vita for both series! Joy!! :D

Indeed I hate a lot what Guerrilla has done with KZ3 & I think it has downgrade the quality reached with the prequel chapter just because it has given too much credits of all critics without 'filter' properly good suggestions with the simply lamer quote of a fanboy (in KZ2 the only bad thing undeniable, I have to admit, it's the terrible level of lag controls in the multiplayer; never noticed before to try KZ3 trial version of multiplayer; after that it's impossible coming back, but in my opinion KZ2 remain really an unique & beautiful experience never felt before, with some flaws, of course ). However I have tried KZ3 SP demo, seen a lot of walkthrough (almost the whole game) just for my curiosity & seriously, KZ3 SP it's a mixed bug of COD/Halo/BC style, completely miss it's identity & the story it's even worse of the second. I really, really hope Guerrilla with KZ4 not screw the franchising because what I have seen in KZ2 deserve to be explored & expanded in a new level.

Perhaps you should you know... actually play KZ3 before forming an opinion on the game.

You're not really qualified to say, "KZ3 SP it's a mixed bug of COD/Halo/BC style", unless you've really played the game.

For your info. KZ3 is actually nothing like those other games you mentioned. It's def different to KZ2, and although some stylistic elements did take a step backwards, KZ3 is still also a very unique game in its own right. Plus, if you play the entire game with Move, it's completely unlike any other shooter out there ever ;-) a one of a kind experience that should be celebrated for its achievements, and not simply pigeon-holed unfairly as a COD-clone by people who never really played the game.

I don't think such comments are at all constructive. I feel that if Guerilla were to listen to the press' and fans' prognosis of KZ3, they'd simply make a KZ4 that was an abomination and even worse than both KZ2 & 3. I heard very few that can actually articulate well what was really wrong with KZ3, very few that could see past the silly generalisations and see the game for what it was actually trying to do.

KZ3 fixed a lot of what was wrong with KZ2, unfortunately it also introduced further changes that brought the whole experience down, either because of poor execution (i.e. the introduction of a proper narrative - in that KZ2 didn't really have much of one), or simply changes for the sake of appeasing a vocal minority that complained over the previous game unfairly (i.e. lack of colour, changes to MP - as with KZ2 the priniciple criticism was "it doesn't play like COD"). It's quite sad really... I just wish the dev would have held to their own original vision for the franchise and continued with KZ3 as effectively "KZ2 with fixed controller lag". I can't help but think that the end result of KZ3 was partly a result of publisher pressure, as the entire package felt a slight undercooked, dispite being a brilliant and enjoyable game for me. I just feel as though a focus on nonesense features like 3D and local co-op (which isn't all that bad), should have been further down the list of priorities, well beneath "and overall gameplay and narrative polish" and "online co-op" (which should have been in since the first game).

To me KZ3, stylistically, feels more like the original KZ. With it's more defined regions of light and dark and the starker context. KZ2 was the departure into the unknown with it's grittier look and heavier feel. I'd be quite happy if they continued the KZ\KZ3 look and feel on the Vita and returned to the KZ2 feel on the PS3\PS4. IMO they would be best suited that way around.

Agreed. Even the comment about KZ2 multiplayer, controller lag was patched in KZ2 MP, and I don't remember that KZ3 and KZ2 were that different afterwards?

I'd play another Killzone with Move in a heartbeat, where I'm not all that interested in anything else. I actually don't know that I'd even be interested in Killzone on the Vita, unless perhaps they make reallly good use of the tilt sensors there too as an option (certainly seems viable after seeing Uncharted).

Killzone 3 with Move was just so good. I think it's almost criminal that Move support isn't a basic requirement for any shooter.

I don't say that KZ3 is a bad game! I just think that KZ2 is a better game...still playing through the campaign. my plan: restarting with KZ3 direct after...as long as Max Payne is not released :)
Oh, and yes: online coop is a must imo (but probably then the resources are too tight because of the PS3 memory overhead for online gaming?!?!)
