Not really a fair comparison, since Japan's in a huge slump. The DC was selling poorly while the PS1 was selling software like crazy. The PS3 is selling poorly while, well, everyone else is selling software poorly too, except for a handful of titles.

Wow! The market's ripe for a SEGA comeback then. All those people not buying games must just be waiting for a new SEGA console :yep2:

Actually, with DQ9 at 2.3 million, I think it's taken first place. But in the same vein, here's MC for this week:

Actually, it's absolutely a fair comparison. Japan went into a pretty significant recession in 1999, with deflation becoming a huge problem. And of course PS1 software totals were pretty good, there was an install base of around 20m by that time. Compared to that, the Wii is still doing exceptionally well in Japan (though no major releases this year until WiiSports 2) with significant software sales and a install base of around 8m.

Can't refer to the first part, the tracker I know of only has data from 2001 on. But though the recession is a point of commonality, you didn't have this 'lack of interest' in console games you see in sales today.

Compared to that, the Wii is still doing exceptionally well in Japan (though no major releases this year until WiiSports 2) with significant software sales and a install base of around 8m.

What? No it's not. At least not in the same vein of similarly-dominating consoles in the past. Are you really arguing that console sales in Japan aren't in a slump?

Interesting data. Now looking at some franchises:

PS3
Yakuza 3 - 489,739
Yakuza: Kenzan! - 270,438
DC
Shenmue (Sega) - 392,111

Shenmue done right ? This is the way to do it Sega. (hint don't called it Shenmue 3)

PS3
Resident Evil 5 - 472,261
DC
Biohazard CODE: Veronica (Capcom) - 469,813

Still popular but look who is in charged.

PS3
Virtua Fighter 5 < 140k ?
DC
Virtua Fighter 3tb (Sega) - 373,749

How the mighty have fallen. I know the 360 version did worst despite having online play.

PS3
Sonic < 140k ?
DC
Sonic Adventure (Sega) - 475,152

Mascot-ism. Popular with the Ninty crowd.

PS3
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Spec III - 295,174
DC
Sega GT Homologation Special (Sega) - 178,956

This copycat never had a chance.

PS3
Sega Rally 3 < 140k ?
DC
Sega Rally 2 (Sega) - 421,836

Revival Failed ? Did the 360 version did better in Japan ?

Sega destroyed Sega Rally and Sonic with the latest outings.

And arcade style games arent as popular as they used to.

During the DC era arcade games were very popular and part of DC's appeal was its ability to bring arcade perfect and arcade quality games into you house. Arcade games were considered to be the best then. Today they are considered a limited, narrowed experience

GT5P was released in two versions......

I don't think so...

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=15721

"This is one of the first months where I think the impact of the economy is clearly reflected in the sales numbers," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said. "This level of decline is certainly going to cause some pain and reflection in the industry."

Everyone is feeling the pain of little to limited money and jobs, I wager those kids who made the bulk of the game buying public by screaming at their parents for disposable income are likely desperately depressed since their parents are not able to loan them as much as they used to.

However comparing DC to PS3 is kind of idiotic when failing to mention that Sega had a history of losses on so many levels and most important being that there was no faith in their last console as opposed to Sony who has taken a constant stream of progress in making sure their console has a reliable future.

But if the customers don't have the money to spend because they are sticking to last gen as a money saver and replaying older games and the wait and see attitude continues, then and only then can we say that PS3 is in the same trouble as DC.

Also lets see what happens when Final Fantasy 13 comes out and the RPG list grows a bit more given that this is Japan that we are talking about.

Personally I don't trust the numbers that Texan or his source provided for the PS3 given that alot of those older games including Gundam Target in Sight have and will be re-released as value hits titles in Japan.

It is still too early to dismiss or confirm and the economy is not helping.

It is still too early to dismiss or confirm and the economy is not helping.

There is also the x factor that is the significant decline of the console market in Japan compared to 1999. The DC was considered a failure, while the PS3 is considered fairly healthy by the market standards there. It's not a surprise that handhelds rule the market. If anyone had suggested to Capcom higher up that Monster Hunter will be their cash cow on a handheld, surpassing all console SKU's in 1999, they would've laughed.

To note RE sales for example, Capcom was disappointed with RE CV's sales on the DC particularly that RE3 sold through more than a million in Japan 5 months earlier on the PS1. RE5 met their projections in Japan, and exceeded them worldwide on both the PS3 and 360.

As you mentioned, some titles have seen budget releases that have been selling well.

Lastly, if a top 20 chart was made with the PS2 and Wii, I'm sure the latter would top it easily in overall sales. Per SKU, Wii Sports may take the cake. Heck, I could make a comparison of software sales between the GC and PS2 in Japan for the first 6 months, and the GC would come out on top because of SSBM.

I'm not sure how you then come to the conclusion that this sales comparison isn't thoroughly embarrassing for Sony.

BTW, the sales for Wii didn't seem to have any problem in this horrible economy ... and across the ocean, the XB360 is doing rather well in the states also ... even in a horrible economy.

Did price play into this lack of sales?

Absolutely.

But that has more to do with what got them to where they are now and their current trajectory moving forward rather than a dismissal of sales data based on the hopes that sometime in the future it may get better.

The best thing Sony has going for them is a very scalable architecture that can be leveraged in future generations. Though with the latest rumors of Sony ditching Cell, they'd be left with the Playstation brand and a load of very talented devs.

Hopefully, Sony will have learned from this mistake and won't attempt to leverage loyalty to their brand into funding victory for any future video formats.

Actually, Wii sales have dropped a lot this year worldwide despite outselling the other two. Year on year, the 360 is doing better since it's the only console that has seen a price drop since last year.

The US NPD sales this year are shockingly for all three consoles despite the price discrepancy. However, no one in their right mind would put their head in the sand and claim that the pricing hasn't cost Sony this generation, especially in the US.

It has, and continues to do so. However, all factors considered, they're not doing that bad worldwide. The Japanese market factors noted stand as well.

Yes, the past couple months ...

How about the past couple years?

Console Price not only cost them, but their strategy of luring non-gamers has resulted in mediocre software sales for a userbase as large as it is.

PS3 has been an utter failure as a games platform for Sony, but it has provided them very valuable lessons going forward ... assuming of course that they have paid attention.

Well, Sega just discontinued sales of DreamCast in Japan in 2006 even though they were refubished units. Also, Sega Direct in Japan wasn't shut down until last year, so it seemed like the DC had a pretty healthy following in Japan.

Anyone know how many DC were sold in Japan?

Yes, the past couple months ...

Throughout the first half of the year, worldwide to be precise.

I'm not debating whether the pricing strategy cost Sony or not, that's too obvious. Has it been an utter failure as a gaming platform for them? Not quite, good software sells well and in the case of some publishers like Capcom, their titles has sold marginally better worldwide.

Is it a failure compared to its predecessor? Yes. The competition gained ground and they fell behind.

From what I recall, Title after title were promised to turn the tide for the PS3.

The latest in the long lines of promised catalysts were KZ2 and LBP.

How did those "sell well"?
