PS3 FW 2.5 rumoured to have screen grabbing built in

According to this CVG story

A development source has told CVG that PS3 firmware update 2.5 is rumoured to have screen grabbing built in.

The rumor sounds quite plausible to me. The PS3's OS can already interrupt a game during play and overlay the XMB over it, or overlay message prompts or trophies etc. It should be no problem for the OS to interrupt a game to do framebuffer grab and save it to disc.

I suppose it's just a question on how to invoke the screengrabbing. Do developers have to allow it via their game interface. Or will there be some kind of universal hot key like PS Button + X or something.

Interesting inclusion. One wonders at the motivation, considering the prime game-forum use is almost certainly going to be platform comparison with XB360, where PS3 invariably comes out worse, even if just a little. What do Sony want as an outcome? How will incliuding this feature benefit the platform? Do they think increased net-proliferation of dcreenshots will help adverts and sell games etc?

I'd expect that FW out sometime in early October, I guess we'll see.

Btw, interesting on that link that the Mirror's Edge advertisement was for the PS3 version only.

My console has X feature and yours doesn't? Its user requested, and the competition doesn't have it.

Conversely, being user requested, with the competition having it would also be enough.

It better not be a developer-side thing again like with the in-game music. That was useless.

That's different because that takes resources away from the system while the game is running. This would be more like pausing the game, letting the OS take over a while, the returning control to the game. The PS3 OS already has several working examples of this.

Well, one way or another, handing it to the devs is still useless. This stuff needs to be mandatory or implemented into the OS. I hate these inconsistencies with games on the PS3.

Implementation aside, this is kind of reminiscent of the Youtube uploading. And I guess the appeal is the same in both cases.

The experts and haters can get to it with or without this feature. But with a built-in screen capture, anyone can take a snapshot and talk about their gaming moments (e.g., trophy awarded). I see a few photo threads (e.g., MGS4 has screen capture too); with new good looking games coming, it should help to enhance forum exchanges.

Its very heartening to see devs listening to people. I, for one, would definitely want to have this feature in. Its like Youtube.....why do people like to put their moments on the net?
There are so many moments I feel like taking a grab, sometimes to share with friends what I did, or sometimes just coz my money bought me something so beautiful I like to take pics of it( put in layman terms).MGS4 did a very good thing by putting the thing in it.
Look at all the Screenshots threads to get your reason.

Maybe Sony are feed up of seeing rubbish images deliberately used for PS3 games in most of the comparison shots.

It could be a great selling point. It's the same idea as battle recorder in Halo 3. Relive moments or show off what you've done in a game to some friends and the online community. Plus of course like previously mentioned, people could make real comparison shots between the 360 and PS3.

Its goign to be useless unless its also recording the whole level ala halo 3. Whats the point of a framebrab if by the time your able to take the grab whatev er you did is already done. Also its a still picture so what cool stuff is it really going to do.

I'd be impressed if they added the halo 3 videos. I'm still wonderin why ms doesn't liscense that out on the 360 side

If you're in a good clan, you'd know that screen grabbing can come in handy. We had a few photo ops in 40-men Resistance. I'm sure we will have a 60-men group photo in R2 again.

It is also great for bug reporting, or getting help from fellow gamers.

Sounds like a cool feature, hope it's true!

Only slightly OT, but can games access photos stored on the ps3? I thought it would be cool if games like GTA or even Oblivion randomly grabbed pictures to hang on the walls in your house. :) Racing games could throw something on a billboard now and then. Yeah, pretty useless but would be fun.

If home can do it, I can't see why games can't

It's just a matter of implementing it.

There are many moments in Bioshock, Uncharted, Hot Shots Golf, Warhawk, and many games, where I would have liked a screen shot of a certain area to use as a Wallpaper.

Last time we heard about this, it only took up 3mb memory. I'm sure it's even less than that now.
