I use WMP11, and stream just fine.
I dont use any 3rd party programs at all.
Try checking the FourCC of some of the files you have and change the code to DIVX using this or this FourCC changer.
Streaming from WMP11/Vista 64 here with no major issues though the odd one or two videos won't play even though they are identical in encoding settings to videos that do play which is strange.
I'll try that tonight. Apparently XViD streaming definitely doesn't work, which is most unfortunate as that's the most popular codec on my HDD -- this is according to ArsTechnica.
What containers/codecs?
I've tried a dozen different files, DivX 6, DivX 5, and XViD all included and none would stream using WMP11 on Vista and they all worked fine on the 360.
The feature's creator, Kyoto-based Q-Games (PixelJunk Racers), which was commissioned by Sony to create the visualizer, has been talking to Gamasutra about the feature's genesis, its use of NASA data, and possible expansion concepts.
Q-Games' chief of technology James McLaren spoke to Gamasutra about how that project got started, explaining: "Originally, we were working on the Gaia project (our name for the earth viewer) as a possible boot sequence for the PS3. The waving cloth background, also created by Q-Games, got the nod when the PS3 launched."
But how were the effects in the visualization created? McLaren explains: "This representation of the earth is a 3D model with some shaders and SPU trickery going on. We tried to accurately model the earth's atmosphere and have all the correct highlights on the oceans, etc. The texture data is sourced from the NASA Blue Marble project."
"They have some data that they've patched together from hundreds of satellite passes over the earth, which is really top-notch quality, as you can see. We really owe NASA a debt of gratitude for the data, as without it we wouldn't be able to produce something that looks this good."
Version 0.9.11.4 (December 30, 2007)
Transcoding
Transcoding configuration can now be done on the file/folder/url level, in which case it wil supersede the system wide settings.
Customizable Menus
It is now possible to set the menus to be organized by folders only, this is in additon to the default menu organization and the custom one.
Devices
Turn off transcoding of AVI/DIVX (version 4 or higher) for the Sony PS3 (Divx3 is still transcoded) since firmware 2.1 can play them natively. AVI/Divx that do not play natively can still be manually configured to be transcoded. This for examples solves the PS3 problem with Divx files larger than 2 Gb.
Bug Fixes
Do not register a Windows shell context menu command for files (since it gets invoked when double clicking on file types that have no other handlers). The context menu command for folders is still kept since it has no undesirable side effects.
anyone know how to get the PS3 to play MKV files? a lot of people have said that they got it to work. i can play pretty much any file type now, except mkv. i have the CCCP installed (combined community codec pack) which includes ffdshow and haali mkv splitter.
i use mkv2vob. it changes the container to vob and preserves the 6ch audio. the downside is you cannot fastforward past 1.5x.
i'm guessing the mkv video files i have are just using a higher profile than what the PS3 supports (4.1). ill just stick with mkv2vob i guess, until the ps3 properly supports mkv.
i believe the ps3 cannot play 6ch audio in mp4 container; that or the mp4 container does not allow it. so i either use mkv2vob, or in rare cases (now that the ps3 supports avi and wmv) ill use ripbot264 to convert to mp4. it uses x264 encoder and encodes with excellent quality.
but man, this is awesome. no more need for usb drives for transferring my files. i can stream almost any file from my PC. saves a lot on my PS3's HDD space too. now i just use it for game saves/files and demos.
