Project: Spark [XO]

I am subscribed to their Youtube channel and Project Spark developers have said in the video below that the game will be playable on the Xbox One by January 2014. I can't wait... this game is a serious system seller and a day one purchase for me.

The transition between the worlds and levels you can create is totally seamless, as you can see in the video, and if you have some imagination the sky seems to be the limit.

This one minute video shows what you can do with this game.... A varied selection of games, but not a real selection of games, it's just Project Spark running all of that.

I have read this is voxel based, apparently for objects as well?
The developers have said the game runs on voxels in this video. At the 18 mins 30 seconds mark on.

It seems that voxels allow for the scaling when zooming, all the detail up close and the customisation of the world, being able to build infinite worlds, and all the incredible scaling when zooming. Then you have the perfect merging capabilities of objects, which seem to be made out of voxels too.

Very cool thanks, have not had time yet to watch them. Back to school and working on the house, wish I could do that with voxels!

Cool! Can't wait to see what people are creating with this!

Hopefully some cool side scroller arcade shoot em ups!

R-Type Sparks Edition would be classy :)

For terrain. That enables the sculptability/deformability. The objects are triangle meshes. There's no real other way to do it at the moment, which is why voxels have been used for terrain going back to the likes of Magic Carpet up to ModNation Racers.

So, PC users will also have access to content created on XBone? I am asking regarding the animations Mocapped via kinect. Frankly, this is the first good use of kinect :D !
Will they allow us to connect Kinect to PC?

I'd imagine there will be a PC version of Kinect 2.0 at some point after launch just like there was for Kinect 1.0. I'd imagine that it's slightly more complicated than the Kinect 1.0 X360 to PC functionality as Kinect 2.0 greatly relies on the Shape block in the Xbox One.

Latest Twitch livestream...

Awesome. Cool music functionality. They made a keyboard synthesizer that even recorded & played back! They also did a Star Wars/Spaceballs parody cutscene/machinima. They also did some cool stuff with physics. And it was all done with the E3/alpha build. Lastly, tomorrow on their live feed they are doing a whole show using the Xbox One version with Kinect functionality.

Finally got to join a live stream today. Got to ask a question & it was answered on video...

Kinect integration works but it's not without some issues like skeleton twitching. They said it's very early build(probably alpha) & they are working on cleaning it up. Kinect as a controller is on the list maybe later, but it wasn't their primary focus. Performance capture is something that they thought was unique & special.

My question was if they could create random levels/rooms/mazes. It's at the 37:49 mark. I was kind of considering building an old 2D overhead action/puzzle game with random generated rooms with mazes as kind of an homage to one of my favorite games on my IBM PCjr: Shamus. Figured it should be possible with Project Spark, but I didn't want to create all the rooms. So instead I thought it would be cool if it could random generate them instead. Looks like it might be possible.

Anyway, neat stream today. I'm getting really excited to try this out. Might even try it out on Win8.

Details on Smartglass support...

“Project Spark” – from Saxs Persson, Director Microsoft Studios (Team Dakota)

“Project Spark” is all about putting the power of creation in your hands, and we’re literally doing that with Xbox SmartGlass available on all Windows 8, iOS and Android SmartGlass-enabled devices.

What we have created is not really a “companion” app as much as a mirror of the Xbox One experience, and more. It delivers the full power and visual fidelity of Xbox One with the additional benefit of the Windows 8 touch interface and a virtual keyboard on the device connected via SmartGlass. This means that you can play, create, and share on SmartGlass devices.

Anything you can do on your Xbox One in “Project Spark,” you can do with “Project Spark” on SmartGlass. This even includes playing games built with, and designed for, touch input.

SmartGlass infinitely expands the possibilities of “Project Spark” user-created games on Xbox One. For example, someone could create a touch-only based game and, using SmartGlass, Xbox One players can play, remix, and share that game without platform limitations. Creators could even create games where there is a mix between the two – a shooter or action game where controller works best, and then puzzles that require touch input to solve.

Our goal is to open players’ imaginations and give them the tools they need to create anything they can dream up. Combining SmartGlass with Xbox One lets us deliver on that promise. Team Dakota is extremely excited to see what you can create with these powerful tools.

Here's a video on making a point & click adventure game...

This game is going to replace Minecraft for my son, and for once I will be able to work on my own personal projects without him wanting to play with my level editors! Oddly, I can see him controlling the water blob for a few hours. ;)

Hmmm....The programming part is still as tedious as LBP. I guess that can't be solved as logic has to be que-ed one after the other. Lets see if this can become the phenomena I expected LBP to become.

I think the part kids are going to love most is recording thier anims over kinect. That could make some hilarious fun in itself, without making any game at all. Hope they simplify doing that as the presenters seem to take a LOT of time setting the character up for recording the animation.

Nice video of the mode called Crossroads. It's basically a wizard for creating a game & doesn't require any programming. It's basically for new users who don't have any programming experience. Pretty neat.

Beta is still coming but they haven't announced when, but it's close(a week or two).

Here is something from my first real attempt.

The bridge crossing is made from different pieces and I have yet to finish it. Generally, I only work on this when I am feeding one of the twins. I have been playing with the brains quite a bit trying to design puzzle sets to work inside this world. There is truly a bunch of power in the kode, so once this gets out of beta the creations should be insane and well worth playing/exploring.

I am having fun with all the finer details of the world building, working for hours to make a cave, adding wooden beams, painting it. Or creating the flower set pieces for the garden, combining other pieces to try and make a new object. The bridge is made from a sign board for example and small rope pieces with stone rings.

The floating tree thing follows a path, and it is built from maybe 30 pieces. Fun stuff!

Thanks for the report & pics! I didn't get in the Beta. Evidently they only picked those who said they had Win8 at the 1st & 2nd day of sign up. Once you sign up there's no way to change your platforms. Oh well. Eventually I will get in. Keep the pics & reports coming!

Interesting, did not know that. I do know our keys are good for X1 as well, since it is tied to your XBL account. They give keys away on the official streams, where I was able to grab one anyway. I think the overall population is still incredibly low, regardless some interesting things are already being shared. I like how you are able to grab what someone else has built and build on it again or take the idea into your project.

A couple cars have been created for example. The "Crossroads" portion of the game is great for kids, it lets them build a level really quickly. My son has probably built 30 or so already, he discovered the share button before I told him not to. HAHA We did not let him play until Christmas, and now it is the only gift he has touched. Skylanders he played for 10-mins, and went right back to spark.

Edit - most downloaded creation is only in the 900's
