I don't think the question is if anymore... I got a Dig-like feeling.

The only question is when?. Hopefully they'll be released when they're still competative in the high-end.
Late May, early June for launch, probably. Availability, I have no idea.

What are you basing that on?

Let's just say it's more than a gut-level feeling. I would expect that the chip has taped out already (probably been a few revisions, too).

At a decent price, I'm in for a PowerVRS5 !

Also require good OpenGL support (that is OpenGL1.5 + GLSlang and OpenGL2.0 when it'll be here).

“3 times faster across the board then NV40? I think you should keep your expectations in check and consider the PVR designs from the historical perspective.â€￾

From a historical perspective the none PC, PowerVR had some been vey high end cards over 3 times faster then 3DFX, Nvidia and ATI. Remember the first PowerVR arcade chips there where far ahead of 3DFX and Nvidia. PowerVR had hardware T&L working in products a good 2 years before Nvidia and the series 2 arcade units in there most powerful versions are more then 3 times faster then any arcade chips Nivida, ATI or 3DFX have shown. PowerVR also managed to beat 3DFX when 3DFX where at there peak in the arcade market. There was also the Dreamcast deal that chip was more powerful then anything 3DFX or other company’s could put out which was why PowerVR won the deal. Now we have the mobile market and the MBX is looking to be more powerful and more popular then anything else shown in working hardware.

I don’t have any doubts that PowerVR can make a high end PC chip.

isnt ImgTech something like 70 to 80% R&D staff while Nivida is something like 20% to 40%?

Well they can allways use slower ram than ati and nvidia so it should help reduce the costs there.

Yup, and failed to deliver when HW T&L was already a no-brainer for modern GPUs...

Frankly, I really can't be bothered about their oh-so-wonderful handheld or console or workstation chips - we're talking about consumer PC graphics here, and so far they have yet to prove themselves in this field. I wish them best of luck just as I do to S3 and XGI and Matrox etc., but I'm not willing to swallow such outlandish performance claims just because it's PowerVR, the Official Saviour of Graphics.

3X the performance of NV40?

That would be a BLINDER

That level of performance is almost unthinkable it has to be said, if that came out next month it could sink ATi and NV as performance leaders for good. If...

I think the most important question is how good will the drivers be?

If they can produce a card with a very good set of drivers and solid performance I think they will have a real chance of capturing market share from Nvidia and ATI.

Do you think this chip will have a better performance per pound than the other competing products?

BTW am I right in thinking PowerVR is a British company?

Well i'm certainly surprised. I hope this one makes it out. I'm very intrested in a PowerVR solution. Price and performance wise :)

I would be very pleased if Series 5 is just somewhat better than NV40 Ultra performance, while rivaling NV45.

I don't expect a 3x leap over NV40 Ultra. not even 2x.

maybe 50% faster. that sounds much more realistic.

I don't remind (and too lazy to search). Has any PowerVR part ever been the top performer in the past? from what i remember, it has always been a little behind...

well the kyro with the specs of a tnt 2 card was a match for the geforce line. It just suffered from lack of tnl. I bet it was a whole lot cheaper to make on top of it .

a 8x1 at 400 mhz powervr chip would have an effective fillrate of at least 8000 where as the 16x1 400mhz 6800ultra only has 6400 .

Not only that but the 8x1 would most likely be smaller , cost less to make and would be able to use slower ram to boot .

The tech is capable . They just haven't fully used it yet . At least not in this market.

"So...PowerVR S5 rumors again....has it been a year already? ;)

Yep, so it's only another 6 months until they launch or cancel and then another three before we might be able to buy one!

Seriously though, it would be nice to see a PVR chip. I am a bit concerned though that even before before the kyro launch if you knew where to listen you could hear from folks compatibility testing them.

Now maybe folks are better behaved now or maybe hiring Kristof to DevRel has made their QA 100% proof (or something) or maybe I don't know where to look anymore, but I'm worried all the same. With driver so necessarily different from the rest of the industry, they need that much more work and without that work you leave the door open for nasty PDFs.

Anyway, here's hoping that a Series 5 exists and that the fans on them are either quieter then the Kyro or better still absent. After all, if it's faster than a 9600XT and passively cooled then a whole phalanx of noise obsessed Shuttle owners will buy one...

Only 3X the performance?

Why not 10X?

So...PowerVR S5 rumors again....has it been a year already? ;)

Well only 3x because PowerVR tends to be overly conservative in what they make, at least historicly... And I can see 3x the performance being a semi-realistic number given the same component technology being used [GDDR3, 0.13u low-k, high clock rate, high number of pipelines]

Mmmmm

Oh, its nice to have a nice warm PowerVR thread to snuggle up to when walking the videocard moors. cos I tell you, those cold nVidia and Ati winds sure suck the life from you...

Are we gonna use the series 5 or a custom PVR chip in our next board?

That's for me to know and for you to found out.
