Sony's game-business head Ken Kutaragi said it planned to unveil a playable version of the new console at next year's E3, the annual video-game trade show scheduled to take place from May 18 to 20 in Los Angeles.

"There has been some talk that development is not going well, but we expect to have a playable version at E3. We are pushing ahead with that schedule in mind," Kutaragi told a meeting of developers, suppliers and media.

Kutaragi did not mention a launch date for the new console, dubbed "PS3" by some websites, but company officials said it may follow a similar timetable to market as its predecessor, the PlayStation 2 (PS2), which went on sale in Japan almost a year after it was first displayed.

Yowsa! Playable means that all this talk about 2007 or late 2006 are crappy... If it's playable at E3 2005 then the latest it can come out is the beginning of 2006.

Damn Megateto, you beat it to me, I was about to post it.... :devilish:

Just got posted on Yahoo 17 Min Ago.

Edit: Megateto you could have made the headline more catchy like OMG! Breaking News: PS3 at E3 2005 - Ken Kutaragi.... :D
Now I expect this thread to last atleast 10 pages.

...or they're just playing the competition... ;)

Well the competition has already said they will have their consoles displayed at next years E3 so this is just SONY's attempt at damage control. The competition is ready whether SONY displays their console at E3 or not. ;)

I wouldn be suprised if it's not playable during a unveiling.

Tech demos on CELL workstations to be exact...

Well, it's not as early as some people on this board have been hoping. But seriously, six years is a good run for a console. It's not exactly early but not excessively late either... unless Xbox 2 takes off. But there's not much Sony can do about that.

Just for amusement, lets assume that this info is correct and that the plan is to show a playable PS3 at next E3. What does this mean in regards to the CELL patents, the performance, memory, blu-ray etc?

Also, how does this stand in line with the fabs and the production of CELL chips on 65nm?

Maybe we could get the first TOOL early 2005.

I predict CELL workstation internals with a PS3 shell kinda like PSP's showing at E3.

So i take it it was confirmed that the PSP at this year's E3 weren't the real deal... Haven't followed lately....

It would mean everything is ahead of schedule OR everything is being downgraded. It would also mean developers would have devkits by now?

Well it's been confirmed that none of the games were running on real hardware. Only the tech demos were. For all we know the tech demos could've been run on a EE+GS@90nm inside those PSP units.

Mmmm ok. Not sure why going through all that trouble (having to manufacture very few fake PSPs with a EEGS@90 inside, at god knows what cost...), but hey who am i to talk.

Confirmed? Would you mind to back it up, with something more solid than your word? How about a link? TIA.

Final Hardware for the PSP was available before E3 as you see in that picture (PSP TOOL): the tech demos were designed on that and were running on that (interactive demos).

Unlikely. PS2 chip sucks 8W alone, RDRAM could be as much as another 8W, but likely at least 4. That's 12-16W just for the main chips to get rid of inside a plastic shell no bigger than two chocolate bars stacked on top of each other, that'd never work. It would burn up.

still likely to be a 2006 release, no?

I think so.

PS3 at E3 2005 might not be anything more than PS2's showing at E3 1999, where they had the original PS2 tech demos and I think at least one interactive GT 2000 demo (correct me if im wrong here).

E3 2005 will be very exciting regardless.

Exactly, and the developer of the (impressive) rubber duck demo (and the spherical harmonic lighting city demo) talked about the actual hardware, and said that some part of the GPU were not documented when he wrote the demos, and he confirmed that he developed the Demos on the real Hard Dev-Kit.
