Playstation Move Games

I was also not especially surprised to read there is little to no UI and interaction consistency between the games :(
The actual quote:
I also am really disappointed there is no consistent interface between games. Sports Champions will actively tell you when your controller is not in view of the PSEye, Tiger just makes wild assumptions. Some games ask you to calibrate by hitting the action button and pointing at the Eye, some the trigger, some the X button. You also must calibrate every controller between every different title.
Yeah, Sony's open development policy. On the one hand the devs appreciate the freedom I think, but it does make the PlayStation experience a mixed bag, whereas Wii is very tight (because it's Nintendo games on a Nintendo console!). The lack of a consistent, universal calibration method is typically PlayStation and makes for a rougher end-user experience. Definitely not good for the market these games are targeting.
Controlling the PS3 interface with the Move controller is really frustrating. Hold in the trigger and shake the stick to move in all directions... but it is waaaay too sensitive. I found myself giving up and reaching for the DS3.
This is where a Move nub would be ideal. :( (Okay, if they made a good move interface it wouldn't need a nub... :p)
The input lag is noticeable with everything. Not so much that it is make or break, but it is noticeable. It's a little like playing online and mentally compensating for a specific lag while playing.
This is eyebrow raising. I've seen lag in cases, but he's saying all games have perceptible lag. Might be annoying.
Sports Champions: Star of the show, no question. I got to play table tennis and disc golf. The table tennis is sublime. Topspins, smashes, rushes, fades… it's really great! I miss the ball sometimes because I'm trying to get the perfect smash in. Very good. This is one of those games where the lag compensation kicks in pretty quick. The disc golf could be great, I dunno… I only got to play one hole. I want to play more though! Judging by that single hole it feels like it could be a great time. Again, you have *got* to stand for this one. You move left and right and forward and backward for the table tennis… and it works! Jim Cramer says BUY BUY BUY!

It's worth noting that this is before the september firmware has been released, which should be a lot more optimised for the Move afaik, as well as have some universal calibration options. This could also affect controlling the XMB with the Move. But I do expect that we'll have various calibration methods in games regardless, partly also because the games want to calibrate different things (like your physical dimensions in some cases) and as the games may be using different buttons for different things, it can make sense for that game to do it differently. But yeah, some guidelines by Sony could have been nice regardless, no idea what they are up to in that regard. And everything that uses absolute positioning is likely to always want to calibrate.

Video of a Japanese Move and 3D showcase event, which at the 3:40 mark has a brief glimpse of an Ape Escape game that looks nice (who doesn't like rainbows? ;) ). I also see a game with two players controlling a cannon each to fire at a pirate ship of some sorts that actually looks quite nice (though fairly simplistic in terms of gameplaY) and I have no idea from what game that is.

They are going the opposite direction from Kinect's avatar approach:

We took out the avatars to allow the camera and the MOVE controller to put the focus on the player.

Could be interesting for a performance/self expression title.

In similar vein, the latest Kung Fu Live trailer demonstrated the use of "augmented reality" comic books.

EDIT: May be interesting to see some PS2 Kinetics titles too.

I don't think that is what it will be in september though, we're still due a fw update then. I'm going to bet it will have Move integration with actual pointing.

That is truly ghastly. They need a system update to integrate pointer functionality even if no-one ever users it, because the impression this would leave with any user would be atrocious. Move is suppoed to be about intuitive interfaces!

Sony TV's have fairly high input lag as well. It's possible the GAF member didn't have his TV in game mode. I guess this could be a problem regardless, because HDTV's seem to be getting higher and higher input lag each year.

If they are like any other hardware manufacturer, then their software platform is treated like a component of the BOM cost. i.e. the cheaper they can make it, the better.

The first instinct of the product manager is to stare at the motherboard, add up cents, slap the software support cost on top, and call it a day. It would not look good if the software cost is too high. Let alone a continual/expanding software team.

The XMB doesn't make any money directly. It probably falls under this working model.

I certainly hope that Sony Japan has evolved beyond such product management approach. -_-

EDIT: Have a friend who worked for Creative decades ago. Even though the founder and CEO tried to change this approach, the entire company was so entrenched in BOM cost that my software friend was fired after causing "too much trouble" for the company (2 years, I believe).

EDIT 2: The other way to look at this is: That's part of the reason PS Move has 46-47 titles this year. They pour the money into game development. We'll need to complain loudly to get Sony to update XMB for Move, especially if it gains traction. They promised to listen.

I'm very confident that we'll get a revamped browser for this. I think it was in a PS Blog comment.

I tried to hunt down the post to see what else they say. There are definitely a few suggestions on the Idea Sharing site for PS Move web browser and XMB. Can't find anything from Sony staff yet.

Meanwhile, another PS3 site also looked at XMB Move:

A quick tour of the XMB reveals some pretty neat features. There’s a calibration screen (below) that lets you reset the Move’s sensors via a bizarre twisting ritual that works much better without a wire charging the Move – we didn’t actually need to calibrate the Move at all, mind, but it’s nice to know the option, which is under the Settings column on the XMB, is there in case we need it.

Music wise, you can obviously select an audio track with the Move from the XMB and it’ll play no bother, but fast forwarding and rewinding doesn’t work, although it does try. What does work, mind, is the same action on Blu-ray movies – you can hold the trigger and swing the Move to control the playback speed (and direction) of a film without any fuss, and whilst some menus were a bit of a problem, basic Blu-ray control with the Move is already in there.

It works without PSEye.

I reckon still a lot of work needed overall.

Gran Turismo 5 is going to support Move also. Sorry if someone already said this, but I did not see it as I skimmed through and it is not on the OP list.

I saw the Kung Fu Live interview on PS Blog. They call their game a controller-free PS Move game. 8^D

In this way, GT5 is a PS Move game too like what tha_con mentioned. It's a little confusing because all the Move cited advantages and disadvantages may not apply in these games. Nonetheless, early reviews praised GT5 head tracking. I'm sure many people look forward to try the implementation.
