A few tidbits of info (from the horses mouth so to speak):

Specifically, its basically plain vanilla single texture OpenGL 1.1 style graphics we are talking about here.
No access to the VUs? All wrapped by the libs? OpenGL compatible / similar interface.

Since we are currently prototyping on the PC since we don"t have hardware for our target platform yet *cough*, it may be sufficient as a proof of concept until we get real hardware and see how much access we have to the depth buffer.
No hardware yet. Little specs.

Translation software with speech recognition input and speech output have been available for computers and PocketPCs/PDAs for years. This is just SONY's version of the same software for PSP. As a matter of fact NEC has a cellphone in Japan that already does this but I think it's limited to just Japanese/English.

Both PSP and NDS can easly run software that's similar to PDAs so I wouldn't be suprised if software companies started making PDA utilites for both. Of course I'd rather have a NDS as a PDA substitute than a PSP. ;)

Now, now... Lets not get to carried away with fiction now... The N900iS has a *dictionary* not a *translator*... And considering what the iS gives up for it, I'd rather have the N900i instead...

That's true, however, they do have a working prototype unit that uses a huge server/client translation database. Only thing holding it back right now is NTT which has not yet implemented the database. Oh and I'm assuming Dragon Quest was what you were talking about. :)

Novel? Ummmm have you heard of a babelfish

What novelty? It has been done in STAR TREK 30 years ago!!!

Talkman is a good idea, but it seems the terms "novel" and "sophisticated" are really being stretched here
Lay off the hatorade, guys :p Just because some SF TV shows/books had some concept fifty years ago, doesn't make it's real life development any less interesting. I am not aware that such software exists for PDAs. If it does, then great, I'd love to test it!

Can anyone give a solid answer of battery life while playing games on the PSP? I have search but I can't find an awnser.

My A1303SA has a *dictionary* too ... 1 yen with a au plan. If I wasn't poor, I'd get a N900i...(me.want.FOMA)

in newsweek they were talking about how the 4th generation of ipod minis will get 50$ longer battery life with the same batterys .

I wonder if sony will be able to tweak the power load and get longer life for the psp. Though i doubt 50% longer as sony has diffrent modes it woud have to optimize for . But i'd take 20% longer

I don't think they can improve power consumption too much on something that's designed to be this powerful unless they choose to have a more expensive extended capacity stock battery.

Nah, we'll just wait 2 years after the PSP official launch, when they'll release the new version with 100% more battery life. :devilish:

Umm, again, no... What NEC *has* is a handset that takes voice recognition commands as input for i-Mode search requests. There is not "hold-up" from NTT for a translation database, the voice server (which is what it is) can sit outside the NTT's network (IIRC they just using an iAppli to hit pass the captured audio and pass it to the voice server taking advantage of FOMA's bandwidth). Plus they could just as easily forget FOMA and implement this with J-Phone, DDI Pocket or AU just as easily (Hell, AU is currently pimping more bandwidth than FOMA lately)... And yes the DQ is kinda cool... Although if I picked out a 900i series phone, I'd probably go with an F900iT (the GF currently has a n F900i)...

I think you're confusing this with their other little project (being demoed recently at Narita) which *is* a translator, but it's in the form of a palmtop (basically like a Canon wordtank that supports voice input and output)...

Actually that cheap little Sanyo of yours kicks the crap outa pretty much any phone available in the US... FOMA does kick ass, the 900i series sets in particular, but AU is pimping some serious bandwidth with 1X WIN, and it's a flat rate with EZ Flat...

Anyways, aside form WiFi support, how long before you think somebody makes a PHS module for the PSP? :p
