Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

The I remember the Dual Shock 4 being particularly bad for LED reflections given controller's rear LED was relatively large as it was designed to be a focus target for the PS camera. I game in the dark a fair bit and not noticed reflection with the DualSense but I imagine it depends on how your hold the controller, distance and angles.

I'm playing in pitch black room with LG CX OLED.

The LED on the controller and the console are way too bright.

I'm thinking of covering them with black tape.

@orangpelupa
Congratulations on your new PS5! How's the fan and coil whine lottery ;) ? To test the latter, I recommend installing the ultimate coil whine benchmark, i.e. Genshin Impact 😆.
Thanks didn't know genshin is the benchmark, now downloading.... Crap... internal SSD is already FULL.

Yeesh! Deleted destiny. Now downloading genshin.

No issue with fan, fortunately

They are supposed to be weaker but more subtle and immersive. Have you tried Astro's playroom? But I'd say they are strong enough at their max.

On PS4 LED being mandatory could be explained by PSVR in which it was mandatory. On PS5 I don't know why we can't turn it off. Probably inertia. I mean, since PS3 people have being asking to turn off the incredibly noisy starting beep (that was even more noisy on PS5, those madmen) and we could only do that since last year after an update. Why didn't they allow us to do that 10 years ago? Who knows.

PS5 is nextgen for many things like Dualsense features, instant <2sec loadings (when properly done in a few 1st party games :yep2:), and RT / 60fps. But it's actually a downgrade from PS4 in many areas, the OS and the bigger Dualsense. What I want the most is the ability to use DS4 (the perfect controller for me) on PS5 native games. It is possible as all games can be played as such remotely, but Sony stubbornly refuse to allow DS4 to work directly on PS5 games.

For the annoying Dualsense LED you can put some tape on it...

Yeah unfortunately I've been spoiled by Xbox series s quick resume.

Switch games in seconds, without losing progress. While the switcher menu in ps5 is actually a misnomer, as it is not a switcher. It is an recent apps shortcut folder.

As for astro, yeah that dualsense rattle was on astro, specifically the dualsense feature demo screen. Old dualsense = no rattle, and have strong vibration.

While new dualsense that's included in the box of ps5 rattles and weaker vibration.

It can reflect off the TV. I have this with DS4 controllers and it sucks. Considering there's no camera to track controllers any more, but-arse lights make no sense! Certainly not without the option to disable them.
The Dualsense barely has any light. The light from DS4 is bigger and directly facing the TV. Even as such my LG OLED TV is glossy, but never experienced this issue even in a completely dark room. Especially with the Dual sense which is a tiny stripe facing upwards.
I can see that potentially being a problem if you are gaming on a desk with a PC monitor and your hands are in front of it. Although I did game with the DS on an OLED laptop and even then saw nothing in a fully dark room

Maybe your lg oled is brighter than my LG oled, and/or your lg oled fills your field of view more than my LG oled.

To me the light on the console and the controller shines too bright, making it noticeable.

Once the brightness was changes to minimum, the controller light no longer noticeable but the console light is still distracting.

Btw anyone know how to make the quick menu to NOT remember the last cursor position?

It keeps remembering my last cursor position, so I can't use muscle memory to access stuff on the quick menu

Edit

The more I use the UX, the more strange designs pops up.

- launching app thru the app switcher launch the game, not switching games. But if the Game is suspended, it will resume the game. Indicated by "active" row.

- launching app thru the home screen, allows me to directly load latest save, skipping the boring game intro logo, etc. Basically feels like Xbox quick resume as long as I've saved the game beforehand. This can't be done thru the switcher AFAIK.

- I can't launch games directly from the download queue

I m perplexed by some of the "issues" you are having with the console's UX to be honest. They sound too nitpicky. It's like a severe OCD thing.

My LG is a B9. I don't notice the DS LEDs even when the screen shows darkness. I m curious where is your console located? It's as if you have it directly on the front of your TV and the console's face is facing your screen which sounds weird. How's your setup? Can you post a photo?

Are you saying that because you haven't experienced the light reflecting off a DS4 on your glossy LG, I can't have experienced it?
You probably did but that's not the focus of the discussion. At least the DS4 logically makes more sense. The small very dim stripes that are not facing the screen in the DualSense doesn't

Can you elaborate on what's so ocd with expecting good UX? It was not like I'm nitpicking the asymmetrical bluray drive.

As for photo, it's here https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/show-us-your-gaming-set-up-pc-edition.63456/page-2#post-2325743

Yeah, the switcher app/function is completely pointless. If there's an Xbox Series style quick resume in the pipeline, then it may become useful, but certainly not as-is.

For me, the biggest UI issue is not being able to pin any folders (well, "lists") to the homescreen.

I wonder if the slow write speed of ps5 ssd basically made it impossible for Sony to add quick resume....

Or Sony is too afraid their 825GB ssd would die too fast with too much writes?

I wonder if ps5 pro Will have quick resume then... And whether ps5 owners will also can enjoy quick resume as long as they added nvme ssd with fast enough writes?

This reminds me, has anyone done an analysis on the PS5 Slim's on system storage to determine how they achieved 1TB when 825GB is the most "natural" size (according the Cerny). Is the right speed higher? Does it use the same amount of channels, or have they adjusted that to achieve the size?

Need DF deep dive on the slim 😁

Even better if they Also can get cerny or someone from Sony/PS to speak

good features:

- HDR is not locked to 4k (Xbox hdr is 4k exclusive)
- speakers angles can be manually adjusted, but missing automatic adjustment (why? Dualsense already have a mic... Waiting for tempest 3d to work with surround speakers?)

There are a few more but I forgot it once I start typing this...

How do your console's LED reflect on your TV?
It's not about expecting a good UX. Some of your complains are ok, but some of your complains sound negligible/a non issue. Like the quick menu remembering where you last had the cursor, being a problem with your muscle memory. Or how "cumbersome" it is to turn off the console from the Quick Menu, or not being able to launch games from your download queue when the recently downloaded game is sitting on the front of the main screen looking at you to just select and press X

the 825GB PS5 SSD is way too small.... alreadyt orderded 2TB SSD. fingers crossed it wont explode or something

it doesnt reflect on the tv. it directly lit up my periphery.

as for the UX, the things you mentioned are things that should not be in the finished product release. it should have been taken care of while in the development process.and people complains about UX issues on xbox and windows. but on playstation, people are fine with these UX issues. so from sony's perspective it made sense. why spend more resource in the UX when people are already not complaining?

AFAIK the only PS5 UX issue that people has been kinda consistent complaining is the PSVR2 notice in the middle of the screen that appear when you go into passthru mode.

EDIT:
basically i was not trying to make you change your mind. we can agree to disagree. heck, i even has said multiple times that most people are okay with the UX issues i;ve listed.

EDIT:
craaaap., what i ordered is SSD ADATA XPG GAMMIX S70 BLADE 2TB. an ssd that use Innogrit IG5236 controller where its a gamble wheter the SSD will suddenly went kaput or not...

Anyone know why Sony recommend to install the ssd cover, despite the ssd runs cooler without cover?

Googling around, I only found people getting angry when pointed out that the ssd runs cooler without the cover installed. Can't find any info what effect running without cover would be on the ps5 (other than cooler ssd), and why Sony recommends installing the cover.

I cannot remember what the cover is made from, but generally there are only two reasons for internal compartmentalisation of electronics; thermals and electrical interference.

This is literally my setup on a fully dark room with my screen completely dark ,holding the controller at screen level. The PS5 LED is even less bright in real life than how it looks in the photo.
I can't see my controller LED reflections nor my PS5 lighting the periphery.

To me it sounds that you are too sensitive with how you perceive your environment.

Just picked up a PS5 Slim today. It's a noisy boy compared to the Nintendo Switch or PS3 😅

My son plays Fortnite so he is over the moon with the load time and visual upgrade. Luckily it was easy to link the accounts, so he could continue playing with his Nintendo Switch account.
