You're likely right. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

In my mind, there should be no option for "force VRR in unsupported games"... it should only be an "on or off" toggle on the system level... and then the console automatically detects games which are "officially supported" and then flag the few which are "known to have issues" which automatically disables it for those games.

Everything that doesn't fall into those categories should still work and it should all be invisible to the player. If any issues crop up, they can be reported and added to the flagged list.

They're just covering their own butts though, I know.

 

I never even knew the PS5 didnt have VRR. Could be partly because my TV doesnt support it but still.

Seriously they couldn't bother to mention this in their blog post or patches notes? Are we going to need to test all future updates to see if they enabled VRR in case they forget to mention it in the patch notes?

 

What, you don't like hidden Easter egg features in your firmware?

 

Now we just need to have achievements/trophies for finding those Easter eggs. Probably coming as an undocumented feature in a future firmware update.

Depending on the TV you have, the use of ALLM is really obvious.. For example on LG TVs it pops up a fairly large notification box stating "The instant game response is launched" which barely makes any sense. You also cannot disable this annoying bastard of a notification.

 

Yeah, that's one thing I dislike about modern LG TVs. There's some notifications I wish I could disable that I can't.

so that's why now when i boot up my PS5 it shows the same message as my XsS that the TV switches to Game mode.

 

Is there a visual difference in display quality, like colours etc?

 

I have noticed the sudden appearance of a lemon-meringue yellow that wasn't there pre-firmware update. There is also a 46th option for blueberry.

On my LG C9, switching from the Xbox HDMI using ALLM to the PlayStation HDMI port using ALLM (or vice-versa) does not cause the notification to appear. Switching between any non-ALLM input, or inbuilt app (Netflix, Prime etc) to ALLM caused the notification to appear.

 

i don't think so, the image settings in the TV menus seem to stay the same anyway.

 

imo ALLM is not necessary, just use PC mode if you want the fastest response time without chroma subsampling

 

Only for tech nerds (even then some are lazy...). But for the majority of players ALMM is necessary.

 

Personally I hate the fact that ALLM is mandatory. So far I played most of my PS5 games in quality mode with motionflow enabled on my 900h and it was perfect for me. Right now I am forced to use game mode and also I can't switch to vivid mode on my TV, which helped in my brightly lit room. Bummer.

 

Are you sure there isn’t a setting? You could probably maybe even disable CEC … ?

 

You can disable Instant Game Response in Picture>Additional Settings on LG TVs. At least I can on my B9. But I read on Vincent Teoh's Twitter feed that Sony TVs don't have that option, so they're screwed with PS5's latest update.
