Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

bring back the black parallelogram. Though it seems like cooling that thing was problematic from an engineering standpoint and power consumption is only going up.

You mean PS5 Non-obese size. ;)

Shit where can I find an Eastmen Non-obese size :) think sony can hook me up ?

But in all honesty I think the ps5 could look kinda cool in its current design if it was 30% smaller or even smaller than that. But I think its size just makes the design look bad

I'm no longer a pleb; got a PS5 from Sony yesterday through their PlayStation invitation thingy. However, it's far from silent - the fan has a very distracting pulsing I find more bothersome than any other ordinary fan white-noise. Anyone else have this?

Seems I'm just out of luck:

I genuinely consider this problematic. The pulsing was incredibly distracting. Maybe I'll just have to use long HDMI cables and stick the machine in a different room!

You probably have a Nidec Fan (17 blades) like me. I am considering buying a quieter fan with 23 blades to deal with it. Like this one (screewdriver included): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09HWRFJYY/?tag=b3d-21

My launch PS5 is basically un-noticable, having had a base PS4 before its a true improvement. Thought to have coil-whine in some instances, when it happens it can only be heard at certain angles/distances. The fan while not silent is quite enough to have the unit in the living room, again the PS4 was very loud in certain games (like Doom).

Oh and, it seems louder now then when it was new, but theres probably dust in there now.

I never gave attention to it. I dont remember a single noice. Now I wonder if it was because it was completely silent. Curious to be more aware of its probable noises now.

Yeah. So frustrating. We have this with TVs etc where they'll chance panels and you might get a different product to some other that's been reviewed. Seems dashed unfair to me, plus poor form to source and use shoddier components. 10% of the console price just to make it as described?! Bonkers. Plus need for tools. At least it's easily serviceable and apparently doesn't void warranty.

Really haven't looked at much. Played some Apex Legends - wish DF would analyse that game because its frame pacing is crap! Even a solid 59 fps has clear stutters. I bet its internally reported '40 fps' on PS4 is the worst 40 fps ever encountered in a game. ;) Also tried a little Astrobot. The first adaptive trigger demo really is fabulous, the 'click' effect of the trigger at the halfway point. The HD Rumble rolling the bots in the controller was quite convincing too. Are many games using this in any meaningful way yet?

I seem to have struck lucky with mine, apart from one occasion when it spun up to turbo mode at boot, it's been silent. Even when I have left it switched on for days at a time - and that's because I haven't remembered it was switched on because it's so darn quiet!

It was a needed improvement over the jet-engine hot running PS4/Pro. It was possible to play HZD but Doom eternal made the PS4 fan ramp up to levels that became uncomfortable after awhile.

Pleased to report I just powered it on to download NMS and the Matrix demo and realised I wasn't noticing the fan noise in the console's slight reposition. I can hear it, but the pulsing is now more an amplitude oscillation than a tick and more readily lost against game noise.

By pulsing do you mean its speed is ramping up and down? I hear some noise fairly typical of a ball bearing motor but its speed rarely changes.

What setting do you use the console in? Home theater?

Congrats and welcome to the world of drastically-reduced load times. If the fan is really bothering you, replacing it a 30 min start-to-finish process. iFixit have a good guide. If you're familiar with how a screwdriver works, this is a ten minute job.

If you've already been through the trauma of removing the faceplates and worrying about if you're going to break the PS5 (you won't), it's more like 5 mins! If you've planning at add a NVMe drive, I'd recommend doing it at the same time.

If you still play PS4 games, I would recommend putting those on an external SSD hung off a rear port.

It was softly da..da..da..da..da..da. Now it's more wa..wa..wa..wa..wa..wa.

I'm largely using the PlayStation surround Headset from PS4. And yes, the da..da..da..da..da..da.. on first play was sensed through the headphones and distracting in a "bugger this!" kind of way. But yesterday, it wasn't an issue at all. So happy bunny here now.

Yeah. It's an odd situation really. Frustrating and unfair that Sony provide fans of different quality, but they've made the parts replaceable without voiding warranty. Although I saw something yesterday that those 'warranty void' stickers are now illegal as of a couple of years ago? Is this companies being forced to make their wares somewhat user serviceable?

There were PS5 with BD drive at MSRP a few days ago, but I say 'nah, I'll wait for the no BD driver version'.

But just checked.. And the no BD drive version has been out of stock with no new stock replenish, ever.

Aaaaarh

Yeah, I wouldn't get my hopes up on the no-drive version of the PS5. Sony make a very limited number of those as the cost reduction of not including a drive isn't even remotely close to it being 100 USD cheaper. So, there's little incentive for Sony to make those except as a marketing gimmick to claim that there is a version of the PS5 that is cheaper than the XBS-X. I think there was a report somewhere that mentioned that ~10% of PS5s shipped at launch were offered without the drive.

It's unknown whether that number is even lower now due to issues with component shortages making the standard PS5 even more attractive for Sony to make versus the diskless version. Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if Sony has halted manufacturing of the diskless version until supply and demand equalize.

Basically, it's much harder to get a no-drive version of the PS5 than it is to get the standard version of the PS5.

Not the same situation as MS with the XBS-S where it actually is significantly cheaper to manufacture than the XBS-X.

SB

It does lock people to buying network content though, which should mean higher long-term revenues I'd have thought. Indeed, the situation could have seen deliberately tying more people into a download only console as the only option to get a PS5 if they were produced as a significant proportion. From that perspective, seems odd to me Sony didn't try for that.

Incidentally, how much effort would it be to add a drive to PS5 Digital? Hardware is identical but I know you can't just plug one in. That suggests a firmware/hardware block to prevent the upgrade, suggesting Sony want to keep All Digitals all digital and not allow users to swap to disc-based gaming.
