Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

The external drive works for storing and playing PS4 titles, but you can not move PS5 games yet. An update from Sony is needed to allow moving PS5 games.

That probably won't happen. An external HDD is just way too slow. Fine for last gen games though.

So here is a video of the 'PS5 Game Switcher':

Seems like it's just a menu option to switch games but no save state ability....somewhat disappointing...

Looking at how fast a cold boot is then this seems perfectly usable. Loading a saved state is almost as fast as swapping to a saved state.

I think the intention is to just store PS5 games on attached storage - you'd need to copy them back to internal NVME to play them. But faster than downloading for many.

I hope it will be possible to use it as cold storage. For transfer PS5 games to internal SSD. I think it will arrive later in afirware upgrade maybe at the same time as the extension port wil be enabled.
Yeah maybe as cold storage, but they'll never be playable off an external drive like PS4 games will be. There's no point.

But it lacks the convenience of Xbox Quick Resume which also sidesteps games that restrict where/when you can save. I'm not one for swapping between games myself and I remember a discussion with Shifty Geezer on this, who also wasn't and didn't see the value, but I do see the value of Quick Resume for lots of people - just not me.

its not quite the same. saving a state means suspending it; so if you didn't reach a checkpoint for instance you're okay. You don't need to replay that.
With this method if you are in the middle of a boss fight, you'll need to play it through or start over again if you kill your gaming session.

That means in the middle of Demon's Souls, when you get the 'Call' to Duty warzone with some buddies, they're going to have to wait for you to finish before you can join them.

Not a game breaker, but a definite nice to have.

Completely different. Quick Resume is bypassing everything that you typically have to do when starting/stopping a game.....at least for single player...

But I remember there being a discussion where you could save your game at any point on the PS5. You're not limited to check points etc. And if that is the case then it's just as good as a quick resume because it's basically as fast. Maybe not so convenient but it's a negligible difference. Like you say definitely no deal breaker.

oh I didn't know. That's a pretty sweet thing if its there.

I don't think it's the same, based on mpg1's post saying it has no save state ability.

Yeah looks like PS5 doesn’t have a quick resume function for multiple games (yet?) which I though was what the big reservation of the SSD space is for. So maybe they’re working on it? Not sure what is taking 150GB (or GiB??!!) otherwise.

Clearly Sony has a few updates still to release (extended storage being the biggest one) so hopefully we can get some news soon.

I don't know if it would make an impact long term but Series X quick resume over years will probably account for most the writes to the SSD? Also I only see it having a big advantage with backwards compatible games. I think Sony is trying to use the cards where you can load into a certain level to kind of give you a similar function, not as nice but good enough at least with next gen games that will load super quick.

Quick Resume could well be a significant source of writes to the SSD but modern cells can easily accommodate this even if you're switching games dozens of times a day, every day, for years.
