Well, the delay might also allow them to push up yields on CELL (maybe enable the 8th SPE) as well as pick up whatever NVidia's G80 will be, or maybe a G75 customed designed for the console (eDRAM?)

Maybe this Maybe that

I dont see that happening because chances are the right conditions will likely not be met. Even they said they see the 360 doing quite well.

Yeah that would be the only reason worth delaying the launch, to take advantage of the cost savings and improve the specs. But of course, Sony could also pocket the difference too.

However, if Sony launches in Japan in the spring, then it can't launch with improved specs. in other regions in 2007.

While there might be a lot of like left in the PS2 -- Sony has talked about supporting it until at least 2010 -- isn't the current-gen console market pretty saturated at this point? Everyone interested or likely to be interested in the Xbox, PS2 or GC by now has one?

What are the big PS2 games which would tide people over this winter and most or all of next year?

If Sony has been evangelizing a transition to PS3 development and publishers are budgeting PS3 games, would there be big PS2 games to draw interest? I can't imagine Polyphony or Rockstar not focusing on next-gen development already.

Plus if publishers had been told to expect launch in 2006 and it gets delayed, we might end up with better games but they might not be too happy with the delays. Look at what happened to EA with the Godfather delay. Not even a big title yet but Wall Street (over)reacted.

The other part is you know MS will spend tens or maybe hundreds of millions in advertising and other promotion. The X360 may not outsell the PS2, PSP, GBA or DS but they'll probably be able to sell every unit they can make. The preorders seem to be going strong.

I don't foresee the 360 launch tanking, although this is contingent largely upon their launch library. (I do not believe in the 20+ available titles MS PR) A $55-60 GB Micro,(possibly bundled w/Play-yan) a $99 PS2, a $150 dollar NDS, a $250 PSP, the LOZ:TP, great software for both the NDS & the PS2 libraries, I suppose it is entirely possible, though not probable imo. MS has been excellent at capturing the NA consumers' mindshare. Halo 2 for example, you would've have thought your soul's salvation was in that box.

Although it would be good for sony I can't see them doing this unless the 360 totaly flops. I for one will buy a 360 if the PS3 is pushed to '07, I'm a sony fan but I really can't wait that long for the next gen of playstation.

is the supporting fact that "the redesigned PS2 carries a manufacturing cost of less than $99

Interesting. Some here were saying that the PSTWO was still losing money for Sony at $150.

Dropping the price to $99 might make Sony more money, but it certainly won't slow the X360 down.

Anyone who hasn't already gotten a PS2 because they were waiting for it to go <$100 isn't seriously considering purchase of an 'expensive' (in their mind) new next gen console anyway.. that includes the X360, AND the PS3.

I will venture a guess that 80%+ of all potential X360 buyers already have a PS2 or an Xbox.

According to the widely read team at Wedbush Morgan Securities, Sony may delay the release of the PlayStation 3 until 2007--if exactly the right conditions prevail.
Yeah, that is quite possible.

It may also be that sony NEVER releases the PS3! OH MY GOD, THE SKY IS FALLING!!!

 Come on now. It's set to launch in the spring of 06.

Playstation 3 might come in 2007

as might the messiah, but given the current circumstances both are equally likely.

The PS2 will already have had a 6 yr life in March 2006. 1 yr longer than the PS1. The PS2 will continue to sell well into the PS3s life like the PSone did with the PS2. IMO

Like who? Like when?

If it was back during the PSTwo launch then it was probably true that SONY lost money. Dropping the priced to $100 in the future doesn't really say much does it?

Well, in case Sony wasn't planning a worldwide launch for March, then they might just do that for November 2006. This gives them the possibility of beefing up the GPU a bit easily, while also improving overall margins. That might let them give a bit more credibility to "XBox360 isn't the real next-gen, we are".
Still, I can't see either scenario happening.

Mmm doing that could potentially leave them in the same position the Xbox was last time around, with MS telling us how much more powerful it was, how it was a next-gen-and-a-half, and sooo much better than PS2, and look what happened.
Sony know very well that they can't allow a year and a half headstart to MS and it's clear they're working on it, having confirmed a Spring 2006 release.

All these rumours about 2007 are just that. Rumours. Or European release - wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Sony dosen´t gain anything by making PS3 more powerful than it already is. They have the established brand, and the great userbase, these two points are far more important for Sony to protect than going all out on the machine but coming out much much later than the competition. Sony must not let MS get that big of a lead, because that will make them kind of "standard" on market, by having the biggest next gen catalog of games and the biggest selling next gen game console on market.. this will start the snowball effect that Sony had when Xbox was released. (By having so many million units on market when Xbox was released, the word to mouth-advertisment got bigger, more games came out and all this equalled to more sales of hardware for Sony. So therefore, Sonys lead increased instead of decreased when Xbox was released... thus the snowball effect was in motion)

So, Sony will still release the PS3 in spring 2006... otherwise I really must question Sonys business decisions...

The only place I can see Sony releasing the PS3 in 2007 is Europe, actually looking back I think that is probable. In Japan it should come spring 2006...

I wouldn't be surprised, look at the PSP case. Ridiculous, how long has it been now? And for what reason are they only releasing it in September exactly?

Hopefully they'll stick to the PS1 and PS2 roadmaps, that is spring in Japan and winter or the same year in Europe.

I think SONY is deliberately holding back PSP in Europe because they're currently losing too much money on each one sold.
