Playstation 3 e3 thread 2

To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 tech demo of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and by manipulating the camera and zooming in.

From that GS article linked above, my bold.

I was just gonna paste the same thing .. didn't Sweeney express his concerns some time ago as to how hard/impossible it would be to code for the PS3?

LOL I think alot of the press release was designed to specifically slam XBox 360. "MS has one teraflop total performance? We've got over two teraflops! MS supports 720p standard? We support 1080p! MS has a gay controller? Ours is ten times as gay!"

ROFL...

Hate to be the one who says this, but I find nothing extra in PS3's ability to render the movie Spidey character. That thing is probably less than 100.000 polygons and Cell should be able to skin such a model and even tesselate it once or twice before sending it to the GPU. Heck, "FFTSW characters" were rendered with Geforce cards a few years ago :)

I'm also sure that it's nowhere near the quality of the PRMan renders in the movie ;) It obviously looked cool on a projector though.

He said something along the lines of feeling much more at ease once he heard of NVIDIA being onboard.

Thanks! GoW looks much better IMO.

and these screens kill everything else that was shown on the xbox 360 thus far so whats your point? the PS3 can run GoW itself.

I dont think so, I had prefered much more some of XB360.

wheter or not you prefer has nothing to do with which look technically better. its like saying i prefer halo 2's graphics to GoW :)

I think they could mean the RSX can access both CPU and GPU memory ~ 512 MB
How fast can it acess the cpu pool of data though ? IF its to low wont it just be a waste ?

Well FlexIO is ~ 77 GB/s

But I think we're getting conflicting info... :?

Yes but wouldn't it have to go from the ram to the cell and then to the gpu ?

Even if the gpu has 77gb/s bandwidth to the cpu it will still be very inefficent and if it could be used like this don't u think sony would have quoted those specs to make it sound faster than the x360

If it's NUMA, with enough inter-processsor bandwidth, I think it will be okay. Also 22.4 GB/s GDDR will be local/ lower latency...

I need to read the specs again to confirm CPU<=> GPU NUMA...

And originally:

``I can't imagine how you will actually program it,'' he said. ``You do all these tasks in parallel, but the results of one task may affect the results of another task.''

...just to prove my point, and trying to stay awake waiting for the Amazing Announcement(tm) which undoubtly will be just Phil Harrison forming a human pyramid or something.

With the EDRAM in the GPu, i think 1080p souldnt be a prob

How are they going to fit a 1920 x 1080 frame and Z buffer in 10MB of ram though?

Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for"

Nvidia's cheif lapdog..

Not saying PS3 isn't easy to program for though..

It looks like neither console will offer the most important feature:

The ability set two freaking glasses of beer on top of them without it tipping over and spilling all over the place! What are they thinking???

I've opened this again. Had to delete some flames .

Discuss the ps3 in this thread. We don't need flames about which has the better looking games . What we have seen tonight and the last few days are tech demos , cgi or unfinished games . Lets wait and see actual released games before we start that flame fest

Maybe they will just upsample from 1280x720? Also, don't they just support 1080i, which is effectively 1920x540?

Not entirely sure yet, but AFAIK it can just span into system RAM as well (i.e. a portion of the frame buffer will exist in eDRAM and the rest in UMA).
