Phil Harrison's GDC keynote - Home, LittleBigPlanet & more

Well don't then! I don't know if I do either, but at least I can rest assured that if I fancy having a wander around within Home it won't cost me a penny.

you can do everything on other systems related to the community (except play full mp games) for free also.

Personally I don't see any of this as very significant, since MS will just copy it and they have many more online subscribers on X360 than Sony does on PS3, but it's nice to see some neat ideas coming out of Sony. Btw, this project is no surprise to MS and I would be shocked if they didn't have something in the pipeline of their own.

Isn't anyone who is owns a PS3 automatically an "online subscriber" though?

Love it or hate it, HOME seems to be a step in the right direction for Sony. Especially when you consider that most thought their online support last gen was lacking and whether or not they were able to build such an online service. HOME is probably something thats going to eventually come with every PS3, me thinks, so its going to be their no matter what. Also, they say its free so I can't really complain.

Yap ! Playstation Home is a consumer network platform. The possibility is pretty much endless after capturing the audience. The demography should be similar to the MySpace, Cyworld, SecondLife and Habbo Hotel crowd. I like how you can meet and launch games from there. We are already doing it in Resistance online (meet at specific time of the week and then go play together, except that there's nothing to do while waiting). Heck ! We even met on certain Resistance maps to take group photos:

You should be able to literally see crowd gathering around some meeting areas in Home and wonder what's going on :)

There are a lot of bored people in this world. I know because some of them come to my website and ask me what/where they can do/go. Can't wait while this platform evolves with closed beta.

well just as we discussed in the other thread regarding Free Silver XBL accounts, some people just are not going to connect their PS3 machines to the internet. that's just the way it is.

otherwise MS would have 100% saturation on XBL also due to the free account.

No. By that logic, 100% of 360 owners are silver subscribers, when in fact, only 60% have ever logged in.

I don't agree with Johnny's point though really, subscriber base is not all that relavent, if the ratio we're seeing now holds (50-60%) PS3 will have a very large community fairly quickly.

Unless there are unforseen circumstances there will not be a paid online subsriber model, but I have a feeling that the appeal of this new platform may give Sony a justification to charge consumers.

I doubt it..

The more open the platform is the more incentive it gives consumers and developers to jump on board..

And the more it expands the more Sony can absolutely rinse it in terms of marketing and advertising potential..

All that I'm worried about is if it's the only way to do things. I'd rather not run around in a virtual world to check downloadable trailers, or watch stone-faced avatars dance if I want to get together with a few friends for a quick online game. Actually, walking around at speeds that don't seem stupid with those human avatars, it would probably take a lot of time to move from A to B. And imagine the virtual cinema at the time the Spiderman 4 trailer is released... you can now stand in a virtual line? :)
So Sony should include a 'simple' menu based system for all this, direct access and all.

It's cool of course, the kind of thing to get early adopters hooked. Although I would've preferred it to look more decidedly virtual world-ish (like the Matrix; but not the one in the movie, the one in Neuromancer instead).

XMB is still around for minimalist, fast access to local media and friends.

Playstation Store is still around for downloading media.

You can also go into games (like Resistance or SingStar) and access game specific online features from there.

Home is the glue.

In fact, we are still missing movie/music downloads, PSP remote access, and EyeToy to further enhance the experience.

EDIT: I forgot to thank the Sony team for doing this for us. So here you go: a big thank you for making me happy today, so on and so forth ;)

IGN:
"Your Virtual PSP gives you access to all the navigation, features and options of Home." [Phil]
....
Used as a quick navigational tool, the Virtual PSP allows users to hop between bookmarked spaces in their Home universe. Over the course of the entire 30-minute presentation, the PSP was only ever used to transition to new areas, so how much functionality this digital portable actually offers is still a mystery.

True, the better the system is, the more people will use it and the more advertisers will pay to get in it.

My only interest in Home is to watch how it develops (improve or degenerate ).
Theres just so many possibilities to earn pennies everywhere, its not even funny. If its popular it could attract all kinds of companies - wanna have new virtual room interior, head over to ikea (Im sure Sony could get cash from both ikea and the user for each transaction) - virtual ebay - or sponsored treasure hunts for expansive stuff. Im not interested in this, but the sad truth is that people actually pay for screensavers.

But I seem to be firmly stuck in the "First Age" of Videogames, I wouldnt even want 90% that Live has to offer. If I`d had to choose between "Home" and "God of War 3", my choice would be clear.

Hmm I'm not sure if the regular XMB interface is going to allow you to do things like meet up in a group and hop into different games together. That is the real question on my mind. Can you do everything out side of home if you don't want to access the virtual world?

The way I see if it you're going to go to the trouble of creating an avatar based world, why let people access the same features outside?

Also, from what I see this is just basically an application sitting on top of the PSN framework. What's to stop MS from copying this by making their own app that sits on the xbox live frame work that does the same thing? it's like booting up your console and choosing "Graphical" or "text based" interface.

Which reminds me... was this all the stuff from the keynote? This is the 'third age of videogames'?

All awesome! Now I'm looking for where I can re-watch the keynote streaming...

....

exactly

from a consumer perspective what I would want NOW as a PS3 (or potential) owner is an interface that integrates with each game with fully functioning friends lists applicable to and interactive with, ALL the games, including messaging and chat. i understand some PS3 games do not allow you to interact with adding friends and joining parties for games and such.

I'm surprised that they have not implemented that or at least mentioned it today as part of HOME. Or have they and I missed it?
