Phil Harrison Resigns?

I would say he's been redeployed to another project either within SONY, or closely related to SONY. Much like David Jaffe when he left.

SONY would be foolish to let him go. He was a great voice for PlayStation.

Isn't it confirmed he's going to Atari?

A bit off-topic, but where is Jason Rubin, the ex Naughty Dog boss nowadays?
JR, PH and KG, three men I've always enjoyed reading interviews from and who always seemed to have a good vision of the console and games business.

I'm with Nesh here, I liked his style. There is an Eurogamer article by Rob Fahey called Retrospective: Phil Harrison, which I find very interesting as it lists what could be some possible explanations about his departure, like the "infamous" Target Renders (2005) or Sony's internal divides.

Though these media tend to focus on what they know, which is mostly PR stuff, I don't think it's an adequate reason behind these transfers. IMO it's about financial targets. Do you remember layoffs at SCE studios in the last year? Also, SCE WWS will put more efforts tailored for the US market in future. Though Phil Harrison praised Wii's move, it was also his job and responsibility to make the best use of what they have right now and produce solid entertainment products.

Thanks. There's been very little info of the "Iron and the Maiden" project. Is it a game even?
I remember when Rubin left ND, it was said his next project would be working for Sony, bringing together movies and gaming, interactive movies or something.
Could this even be the secret "crazy looking" 2009 PS3 game??!!?

...hmmm, maybe there will be a next gen Atari games console with Phil and Ken leading the project, the circle closes...
A Sony "PLAYSTATION Atari" console, even ;) (4 being an unlucky number in Japan, they need something else)

I feel it is a mistake to let Phil go under any circumstances. The public actually sympathizes with him. He was much more honest then another person in his position of power than any in recent memory. Finally, Phil has righted the ship in the face of countless gloom and doom predictions.

I've no inkling why he would be let go or allowed to leave for that matter. Phil would be a player on my team.

You cannot hold anyone in a job against their will! Once Phil gave the requisite notice, once anyone gives the requisite notice that they're leaving a job, they're free to leave.

Moreover, you wouldn't want to keep someone in a job who didn't want to be there.

This is true indeed. However, I have questions (more honestly...suspicions) as to exactly WHY he wants to leave.

I will leave it at that.

Come on, he has been at Sony for about a very long time, most of that time, he was with the top dog.
Maybe he just wants to prove to himself that he can do it again, without the Sony brand at his back.
Maybe the challenge of making Atari a respected name in the business again just was to good to let go? Good people have offers all the time, sometimes something just tickles your fancy and you want to give it a shoot.

He's been at Sony for 15 years, managing. But his roots are in game development. It's not unreasonable to think a part of him has been watching the novel games being developed and Phil wishing he was in at the 'ground floor' again, involved in designing games rather than just funding them. No reason to be suspicious yet, IMO.

Atari probably approached him with an offer that was quite appealing... I mean he is only human afterall. Reduced hours, more 'in the trenches' work, higher pay to bring on someone with his skill/industry connections... or just plain wanting a change of pace. I definitely wish him the best.

I agree that Phil was an awesome man, one of the few remaining of the present Sony top brass that I feel honestly understood aspects of the technology itself, rather than simply what the PR talking points were. Too many MBA's now and too few engineers I fear in the upper echelons. Ah well... with both Ken and Phil both gone, that takes out two of my favorite 'dreamers' at Sony. At least though I think that whatever the difficulty in getting SCEI to understand EyeToy and Home and such before now, it's a philosophy they're probably adopting in full at this point (post Wii). And at least then it validates that someone at Sony shared the vision of how these technologies could have been leveraged pre-Wii.

I want to believe that. That would be great. I wasn't trying to start anything. Just voicing my opinion.

My Opinion.

Sounds like arguments had over issues sparked by the Lik-Sang lawsuit never got resolved.
Phil Harrison and many of hit top executives were customers of Lik-Sang.

Many of them wanted less regional division with wider online distribution.
Casual gaming with low graphical detail was a popular idea that SCEI didn't seem to support.
Personally I would love to see more effort be placed on smooth lines, instead of high detail.
The main reason for the cost of development jumping has to do with art asset creation.

The good news is the minds that can, are stepping out of the office into the jobs that do.
David Jaffe, Peter Moore, Phil Harrison, etc

hmmm, Just got my issue of Wired. The cover says "Bombs Away." Good omen.

It's sad to see anyone who does a good job go at any of the big 3 in any case. If he's as good as people say he is, he'll be missed alright. The more MS pushed Sony and vice versa, the better that we the consumer have it overall. Doesn't matter if you have a fanboy preference for any system. Worst case for me, one company rules the roost. This way they have to try harder and they can't afford to just "be safe"

:)
