Oh dear god this upcoming generation will be interesting

I'm shocked by the announcement of Nvidia in the upcoming PS3...this really puts the squeeze on MS. Boy releasing early has become an even smarter move on their part. But what about Nintendo? IMO they should just quit competing directly with the competition and release a year later, sometime in '07, make a powerful system and have VR from the get-go, they could probably have a great niche product that remains profitable for them.

Don't forget that SEGA is making the DC2 with PowerVR5 or PowerVR6, just ask SegaR&D about it.

I think Iwata's little "specs don't matter anymore" speech at E3 should tell you that they are not particularly worried about keeping up with Sony.

I'd expect them to follow a very similar approach as they did with GC. It'll be quite powerful, and more powerful probably than they themselves will admit, but it won't kick the PS3's ass by any means. I think it'll be quite similar to Xbox2 in terms of capability (remember: they will likely release some time after MS, around the same time as PS3).

They seem, also, to be focussing far more on the interface with Revolution (that's apparently where the moniker comes from..).

VR goggles with wirelessly transmitted video or bust IMO lol.

Once the initial shock wears off, I expect the nVidia & Sony news to make everything more boring than before. It basically secures the PS3 as a far more conventional machine (with more conventional APIs, etc.) than previously expected.

If anything, it pushes focus even moreso on software developers.

Every new generation is interesting from a gamers point of view, but I think that the "next-generation" is not going to be as interesting as this one. In this current generation we have seen Sega drop out of the hardware business, Microsoft's entry into the console hardware business, a cel-shaded Zelda, the DS, the PSP, etc.

Thank God you're not the CEO of Nintendo.

maybe. I can still see a rather unconventional design being a distinct possibility. Especially if they are using the gigapixel tech for this project.

If I were the CEO of Nintendo I'd whip out a golden parachute! lol...what? I'm lazy, there's no way I'd put in so much hard work into a company facing MS and Sony.

As I stated in the other thread: I think it will all boil down to games/marketing/branding as it always does.

What do I think this means? Well, Xenon has an advantage in that the games have a one-year head start, but PS3 will have the later advantage of being more powerful and exploitable. This is why I think MS will try to counter that advantage by releasing Xbox 3 in 2009. I'm thinking they will attempt to shorten the cycle to launching at $249 every 4 years instead of $299 every 5 years, mainly to reduce the effectiveness of Sony's big investments in fabs. They'll likely support two hardware iterations simultaneously starting with Xbox 2 (but not Xbox) possibly through XNA.

Once again, I'll state that it's a risky strategy trying to get consumers to buy new hardware quicker, but it might work if the hardware is cheap enough, backwards compatible (beginning with Xbox 3), and uses similar peripherals. I'm mixed on whether or not I think it's a good idea.

Hmm, I was wondering...how feasible would it be for some if not a decent number of next-next-gen games to be programmed for both Xbox2 and 3 and actually be on the same disk? It would be very PC like (look at the difference between HL2 on a dx 7 machine and one on dx9), but instead of having to program for a ton of varying hardware, developers would only have to concern themselves with two fixed hardware targets.

not if sony uses blu-ray discs

What would that have to do with anything? Please explain.

Because if the Xenon is on HD-DVD and the PS3 is on Blu-ray it defeats the purpose of putting the two versions of the game on the same disk.

be on the same disc? if sony uses blu-ray discs i doubt xbox2 will be able to read em. ms will probably use dvd-9 or HD-DVD or something
