Official Star Wars: Episode 3 teaser poster

It works well. Hard to see how else Anakin would be corrupted by the dark side...

I expected and prefer the angle of twisting Anakin's grief over his mother against the Jedi and Republic for not outlawing slavery on the Outer Rim. Sitting in the theater back in '99, I knew his mother would die in the second film when Yoda sensed that Anakin feared losing his mother (and fear leads to the dark side, blah blah). Between that and the Jedi obviously not able to maintain peace and their 'failures' resulting in a galactic war Anakin experiences first-hand should be enough to turn him against his former mentors. Hopefully Anakin's fall is more nuanced than Hayden appearing on camera in darker clothing halfway through the Ep3.

My thought exactly. A sulky kid who falls in with bad company because he's lazy and wants the easy way out doesn't make for a sympathetic character. You don't care what happens to Anakin because you don't like him.

Far better to make Anakin basically a good kid who's had a hard life but gets saved by Amadalia's love and his new life a jedi, but who falls to the dark side not because it's an easier path, but because he thinks he's helping people, he thinks he's saving his friends and the republic, but ends up being worse than the evil he's fighting.

It's like Lucas has lost all sense of poetry in his work. Yeah, great fight scenes and merchandising opportunities, but where's the mythic storyline and characters?

The Pre Darth Vader Anakin character should make you really hope he isn't gonna be corrupted by the dark side even though you know it's inevitable. So far that has failed, those little things haunt the new movies in my opinion, the characters are just too unengaging.

The movies are targetted towards kids, of course it's going to be shallow and one dimensional... Once Ewoks entered the picture, I lost a lot of enthusiam for the story.. lol

Liked the first star wars, had a bit of wondering about freaky alien sex in the bar scene.. lol

As for buddy, he's about as good an actor as whasisname that played luke..

.

And that's where Lucas falls down. Do you think that the likes of Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, Toy Story, (which are ostensibly aimed at the kids market) would have been so successful if they didn't provide a level of really clever adult storytelling in there too?

Lucas could have included the young market without catering to them exclusively. No one was expecting Lucas to go to the complexity or violence of a "Matrix", but he's made "Spy Kids" with lightsabers, instead of going for the level of sophistication exhibited by the films I listed above.

Funny thing is, that even the original trilogy was aimed to be kids tale ;)

Finding Nemo, really clever adult storytelling?

You must have seen some other Finding Nemo than I did. One from an alien planet or something...

If you read up on the work Lucas and his co-author did for Star Wars, there was a lot of reference to classic myths and legends like Tolkein, The Illiad, etc. It was obvious Lucas was trying to emulate a lot of the elements of those classic tales, but he seems to have lost the art of his early work and gone for commercialism.

I suspect Lucas doesn't really know why Star Wars was so successful (according to what everyone said they thought during the filming), and maybe that's why he's done so little directing since then. It seems to me that he had nowhere else to go but down after Star Wars, especially if he doesn't know what caused such success.

The likes of Ridley Scott hava a much greater portfolio of artistic work (even though none quite as phenominally successful as Star Wars), and his big sci-fi sucesses (Blade Runner and Alien) seem to have a much more focussed, cult, and even adult following.

Then I guess you only caught all the stuff aimed at kids and missed all the stuff aimed at adults.

My wife and I saw Nemo in the theater and had a blast watching the 'other' kids enjoying the film. This little boy, probably around 5-6, right beside me didn't sit the entire time, he was so excited.

I personally liked Ice Age a lot better than Finding Nemo. Better charachters and better jokes.

On topic though, did you guys notice all of the extra "phantoms" in the pictures. I see 2 Vaders, the emperor, and the Grievos guy.

deleted and moved to next post because of spoiler white text visible in this post [tongue]

I have a feeling that this pic is part of fight between Yoda and Palpatine - and btw - we haven't seen even a slightest hint of what dark side is capable of yet

edit: damn, still visible, well, less than before at least

Well, we've got Anakin vs. Dooku, Obi vs. Greivous, Mace vs. Sidious and friends, Yoda vs. Sidious, and Obi vs. Anakin to look forward to. Just hope Lucas hired a slew of choreographers. . .don't feel like watching the same fight 4-5 times.

I have to say the duel between obi wan and anakin in the 3rd ep is shaping up to be pretty amazing... possibly @ the level of the darth maul/obi wan/qui gonn three-some from phantom menace

and anakin's moves are definitely a lot more aggresive than the 2nd ep...

:devilish:
