Official MS E3 press conference thread

On the matter of FFXIII being cross-platform, it is certainly a 'bombshell' regards stereotyped expectations and in assumed platform libraries, but IMO it's long past time people should be surprised. Way back at the start of this gen everyone of sense was saying cross-platform would be the norm. We've seen plenty of 'exclusives' crossing over - it's the nature of the business. There are rare occasions when a developer sees a single platform as a better fit, XB360 having an advantage there because it's actually cross-platform with PC a lot of times!, but the incentive to stay platform exclusive in terms of workload versus returns isn't what it used to be. Last gen one platform would offer 5 times as much return for development effort than the others, to the point that creating a port wasn't deemed worthwhile. That's not the case any more, so from a business perspective cross-platform is in most cases the smartest choice. It'll be the first/second party games that differentiate, and people should not be shocked at cross-platform games. Exclusivity is no longer to be expected. We should all be gasping aloud when a 3rd partt decides to be platform exclusive!
Does it matter if we're surprised or not? Money was the clincher, nothing else. The richest company in the world, paid a much less rich company a huge wad.

What is Sony going to do now?

To actually meet up! I'm sure some people will use it, but it's not something I personally 'get'. Also what's the actually implementation here? I've missed that. There's a 'queue' thing. Do you order Netflix titles as a $3 or whatever it is rent, and now instead of having to download, you can stream them from Netflix's servers?

I use this already on windows media center, if it works identically, there's a library of movies that are available to 'watch it now'. These movies buffer and stream immediately. You are allowed an unlimited amount of these per month with every subscription plan at $8.99 and above. It doesnt have all the latest and greatest available but a lot of oldies but goodies to catch up on.

Good move for Mircosoft. While it made sense for games to go multiplatform, I think most people were expecting Sony to do everything in their power to keep the third party games that are most associated with Playstation exclusive. Especially FFXIII because Sony is a little short on RPG's at the moment.

some other interesting tidbits

Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.

· Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.

· Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

· LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.

· Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you’d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.

· Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.

· New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.

woops beaten

The marked part, that should be something very good. Probably faster load times and quieter gaming sessions? You know without the DVD spinning at 12x or was it 16x?

So? MS actually owns the intellectual property. Sony may have stock in S-E, but they have as much right to owning the FF IP as Joe Blow does in owning Xbox IP as a stock holder of MS. i.e. zero. :p

Halo 4 was a joke, i hope you got it, im not so sure?, and if Sony had the majority stake in Square Enoix do you think they would have made a 360 version... ?

What they were going to do regardless of what MS did - carry on developing their first-party lineup, their own services, and going toe-to-toe. MS are making choices on the competition, and vice versa - it's business. Or putting it another way, do you really think Sony bet the farm on a 3rd party title they hadn't secured by contract ;)

I think most people were expecting Sony to do everything in their power to keep the third party games that are most associated with Playstation exclusive.
But Sony have repeatedly said they aren't pursuing 3rd parties! Anyone expecting Sony to secure FFXIII was ignoring what they were saying. Okay, it's not uncommon for PR to talk completely at odds with reality, but still.. ;)

It´s easier for Sony to go that route knowing that they didn´t really perform as they should have, at least if they wanted 3rd party exclusives.

yes quite good indeed, and was of my most hoped for additions although I still wish i could get around loading it in the tray. :???:

my Elite 120 GB will now get used and the DVD drive will be quiet... sshhhhsshhh you DVD drive. :p

Give me a HELL YEAH!

Wii version confirmed?

Please.

Money doesn't have to be the clincher here, PS3 install base is relatively small, Xbox 360 userbase is big, and they buy more software than PS3+Wii combined. Considering the game is UE3, i dont see any logical reason for them to NOT port the game. Its cheap, and you increase your market potential tremendously.

It makes perfect sense to port the game, really, it makes perfect sense for all developers that aren't owned\contracted to Sony to be multiplatform. MS didn't necessarily have to pay any money at all.

Also the library for 'Watch Now' videos that you would be able to watch via the 360 is in excess of 10,000.

Exactly, if they're already making the game for PS3, they can more easily do a 360 version than a Wii. :p

But anyways, I think tkf is just joking around ;)
