Official MS E3 press conference thread

Netflix sharing is interesting. Sony's download sharing has been excellent - you can even share RockBand tracks between accounts. Streaming a movie across several people is an unexpected step in that direction, but quite an odd one. Who really wants to watch a movie with other people while at the same time on your own?

The big irony here is MS are totally eclipsing Sony's efforts in the Media Hub department...but then only in North America.

As it is now Microsoft just needs to really beat up Sony big in the US to be a sure worldwide 2nd.

Why not thought? If they have the technology in place that can do it, might as well.

But for something like Rocky Horror Picture show, etc, some movies are fun to chat with, laugh together, etc...Why do groups of people go out to the movies together? It's the same principle. Even if you don't talk about anything while its going on, you are ready to have open discussion as soon as its complete. I think it sounds pretty neat.

I open to the idea of the new dash. Especially if it gets me new features. Just wondering what it means to all the gamerpics and dashboard themes I own?

To actually meet up! I'm sure some people will use it, but it's not something I personally 'get'. Also what's the actually implementation here? I've missed that. There's a 'queue' thing. Do you order Netflix titles as a $3 or whatever it is rent, and now instead of having to download, you can stream them from Netflix's servers?

all i know is Netflix better include (add?) HD versions as well... I have this 120 GB HDD just itching for content

the ff13 announcment just makes me more and more sure that buy next march-june time frame mgs4 will have been at least announced for the 360.

It just doesn't make sense not to release on a console with 20m owners and climbing .

I see teens using it mostly... hooking up to save their friends some money by watching some fun movies together and BSing over chat while doing it.

Although if I were sociable enough of a person to have some good friends over live i might use it as well. Also I know some families or (husbands and wives that travel a lot) stay in touch for free over LIVE and might use it as well.

I'm guessing yes it's DLed to the HDD form NetFlix

Netflix doesn't have any streams you can watch in HD as it stands. That would be great when they do switch to it, but I think we are aways off for that.

I actually found the Primetime stuff for real prizes interesting as well. 1 vs 100 in that model could be huge. Plus some of the XNA content actually looked good as well. The whole Dashboard, Live, Media, Avatars, Channels, Party, Games, Etc. integration is just so slick, consistent, and useful. Seems Sony will still be playing catchup for a while yet.

On the matter of FFXIII being cross-platform, it is certainly a 'bombshell' regards stereotyped expectations and in assumed platform libraries, but IMO it's long past time people should be surprised. Way back at the start of this gen everyone of sense was saying cross-platform would be the norm. We've seen plenty of 'exclusives' crossing over - it's the nature of the business. There are rare occasions when a developer sees a single platform as a better fit, XB360 having an advantage there because it's actually cross-platform with PC a lot of times!, but the incentive to stay platform exclusive in terms of workload versus returns isn't what it used to be. Last gen one platform would offer 5 times as much return for development effort than the others, to the point that creating a port wasn't deemed worthwhile. That's not the case any more, so from a business perspective cross-platform is in most cases the smartest choice. It'll be the first/second party games that differentiate, and people should not be shocked at cross-platform games. Exclusivity is no longer to be expected. We should all be gasping aloud when a 3rd partt decides to be platform exclusive!

yea VERY interested to hear what Bungie has to say on Wed. :D

Microsoft has the Halo franchise 100% and they have right of first refusal for publishing Bungie games

Dear Xbox LIVE Member,

When we launched Xbox 360 in November 2005, Xbox LIVE was integrated directly into the console. Back then, Xbox 360 was the first system to deliver access to experiences beyond just the disc in the tray. With the Xbox guide and dashboard you had access to everything on your console as well as your community.

We also imagined that Xbox experience would continuously improve over time, through the power of software.

Since launch, you’ve always pushed us to continuously innovate. It is because you spoke with one loud voice that we added new features like background downloading, 1080p support, movies and TV shows, video chat, a Marketplace blade and instant messaging.

Over time, as we’ve delivered more and more content into the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, we’ve heard from many of you that it has become increasingly difficult to find the games and content you want.

And that brings us to today.

Because of your feedback, we started rethinking the entire Xbox experience. What we discovered was that we could not only provide a better experience for you, but also something that reaches out to new audiences.

What John Schappert unveiled for the world on stage at E3 was just a sneak preview, so I wanted to share some deeper details on some of the new features in the new Xbox experience.

Here is a look at some additional features you will find interesting:

Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.
Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.
Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.
LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.
Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you’d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.
Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.
New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.
This is only the beginning. Over the next few months, we will share more details on the upcoming changes.

See you online,

Marc Whitten

Afaik Sony even has shares in Square Enix, just not enough.

So? MS actually owns the intellectual property. Sony may have stock in S-E, but they have as much right to owning the FF IP as Joe Blow does in owning Xbox IP as a stock holder of MS. i.e. zero. :p
