Official MS E3 press conference thread

Finally. Thank you ! I was jumping between various game sites to find a summary. None has it yet.

rock band is just timed exclusive isn't it ?

I think so too (Timed exclusive). Unless the conference announced something different explicitly.

Do they render in correct aspect, or just upscale? Existing games can't be rendering in a different aspect to 16:9.

I'd think the simplest option is a universal fixed aspect ratio scaling of the high def setting i.e. black bars.

Developer support for the other PC resolutions is still weird though, particularly for 1280x1024, which can sometimes be full screen stretch of the non-widescreen setting or widescreen with bars, which IIRC depends upon the developer's own decision.

It would be ideal if there were additional functionality settings in the dashboard video setup for this instead. Some folk may prefer the full screen. Some may prefer the WS presentation. One problem is that games that use UE3 seem to do widescreen differently than others expect; the horizontal width is maintained in both SD/HD whilst the SD gets a more vertical view to achieve 4:3 aspect. Users would likely prefer the 4:3 ratio and fill the entire screen despite it rendering at a lower resolution per FOV (larger view, but 960x720 versus widescreen 1280x720).

It's complicated!

Any one-post summary ? :p

I know about:
* FFXIII going multi-platform, which is great news for Xbox 360 owners :D
* New Dashboard
* Avatar Additions
* Access to Netflix Library
* Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 shown and dated

What else ?

here is a list i found while not complete, highlights most points

Gears of War 2 Trailer
Fable 2 Gameplay
Fable 2 Multiplayer
New Dashboard
3D Avatars
Netflix Exclusive
Rockband 2 Exclusive
Casual Games
Scene it, Lips, etc
FFXIII
16:10 Support
HDD Complete Install Support
Geometry Wars 2
Portal 2 Exclusive to 360
Fallout 3 gameplay
Star Oceon 3 exclusive on XBLA?

I'm clearly missing out on something here.

I get the FF thing for the xbox only owners, thats great.

Netflix NA only, i thought there already was a possibility to rent movies on the xbox in NA. Europe or Scandinavia got a few music videos and a trailer for pirates of the Caribbean in the video market place.

I guess i have to look forward to revamped dashboard and install all the new 3rd party games. (except for gears and fable of course.)

Microsoft didn't say, I figured it was assumed.

One stat they gave that was interesting was that 80% of all downloaded game songs across all platforms is on Xbox 360.

There are some people in this presentation that make Kaz Hirai look like a complete non-gaming smooth-talker ... my goodness. Why not just hire some actors? It's scripted to death anyway.

This is all giving me a terrible vibe that makes the 360 look like what we associated Japan with decades ago - copy, copy, copy. There are some great bits of news in here for (us) 360 owners, like Netflix (if you're in the U.S.) and Final Fantasy XIII, or Gears of War 2, or the new Dash (which I'm thinking actually doesn't look as nice as the old one, and I hate the avatar style).

All in all Microsoft did a great job commercially, but inspiring? Jeez. I'm sincerely depressed. This is probably the worst presenting I've ever seen.

Are songs downloaded the same way for GH3 on PC? Otherwise, that just means 80% 360, 20% PS3. hmm..... What's the ratio of RB1 ownership in NA? It's still 360 exclusive in the EU, no :?:

Haven't see the press conference video, but it is to be expected (Sony should already know about the major announcements beforehand). MS wants marketshare first. They will do whatever necessary to achieve that.

I don't see it as copying though. It's a matter of adapting what make sense for their platform.

I think we should wait for Nintendo and Sony press conferences too. I am of the opinion that everyone should be happy this E3. The vendors are out on the market long enough to stack interesting stuff together.

I have no idea. Probaby should ask somebody more knowledgable. LOL ;)

How does the new interface work without an HDD? All those Avatar designs, game icons, etc. is surely dependent on HDD.

I want full screen videos of Banjo and Fable 2 on Live damnit! As much as I'll drool over Gears2, those 2 will likely be the best looking games so far.

After seeing what Harmonix is offering with RB1 songs to RB2, I have 0interest in anything Guitar Hero related.

Great question, but I think the non-HDD models shouldn't have any problems. They're probably all stored in NAND Flash just like every other Dashboard update has. Microsoft still had lots of room left.

Well, watch the press conference patsu, and come back for this discussion. Seeeriously. Give me 5 random people off the street and I could direct something hugely more interesting.

I agree the presentation was uninspiring, even scary with PR blab, but I hope you noticed there was more going on here than just that, and a lot of the content is worth noting. Sony need to match MS's online services!

Oh The Internets! People always say they can do better. ;)

I'm not terribly impressed with this conference. No new, high-profile game announcement. Once again MS is focusing on "right here right now" but Sony will steal the spotlight with promises of tomorrow.

I wonder how much does MS have left for Games Convention. :rolleyes:
