NVIDIA shows signs ... [2008 - 2017]

Seems like the prices keep dropping. NewEgg has some GTX 280's going for $419 after $30 MIR, and the rest coming in at $449 (Listings). TechPowerUp speculates its to make room for a GTX 280 Extreme perhaps based on the 55nm 200b GPU.

I'm curious to see the sales number of the GTX 280. I can't imagine they're that great. Even at the lower price range, and combined with a 25% MS Live Search + eBay + Paypal cashback deal, a $360 GTX 280 SSC isn't tempting enough for me -- not when compared to a $225 HD 4870.

International price is still all over the place.

The 4850 is under ATI MSRP, the 4870 is $3 more, the 260 is $135 extra of $300, and the 280 is $540.

nVidia was *very* competitive in the South East Asia market when the G92 cards dropped (8800GTs at near 3870 prices- on Newegg even that had to be MIRed), now they've definitely taken a 180 stance on it. (The 9800GTX is stagnant in price, ranging from $250-$300 USD. The GTX prices I stated just now were already post-pricedrops of about USD75.)

I think the US channel pricing is mainly for the PR facade and goodwill (and of course, no distributor loss) while less dense regions (but not lacking nV demand, instead the contrary) clearly aren't exhibiting any willingness to drop prices.

Wait, stuff is in demand but prices aren't dropping? How queer.

Previous stuff was. Because of pricing.

Practically little interest in the new series. Especially with the distros insisting that future price drops will be far and few if new stock doesn't come in, and X38/48 pickups (pretty crazy IIRC).

Australia's GTX2X0 prices are pretty bad too when the 9600GT is extremely competitive there, seems like these 2 areas have the same strategy for AIB pricing.

Okay.. I got my new equipment last friday and mistakenly orderd some corsair ddr2 for my dd3 board at Alternate.
The price of the 4gig corsair was 129 and the cheapest 4850 on Alternate i found was club3d's at €139.

No problem for me, I just add €10 and get a 4850 to replace my 2900.. guess what.. they added €10 on all 4850's over the weekend so the cheapest one is now €149. but looks like they can afford it, the cheapest 9800GTX is €199.

so.. is ATI increasing the prices due to phenomenal sales?

ah yes.. only because they can.

What I ment was more that ati actually seemed to have underestimated the retail price.

There's ususally a price blip like this at the start of the life of a new product as retailers try to skim some extra profit on initial demand while supply is a little tight.

If ATI want to gain market share and use their process size advantages to remain within their required margins, it still a win. AMD obviously think they can make up any price issues with volume.

Or maybe it's not AMD cards that are priced to low, it's Nvidia cards that are priced too high for the new market that now contains a real competitor. Looking at the recent Nvidia price cuts on their new card, they think their own products are priced too high too. Nvidia could charge what they wanted because there was not much alternative to their top products, and that's no longer the case and the market has adjusted. In that adjustment, some retailers are shafting their customers a little for some extra profit.

XFX and EVGA? That'd be a serious blow. I think I want better documentation than Le Inq for that.

S3's card is really good for once, I'd love to see it get some more momentum... :)

I heard XFX will integrate a PLX chip and put a matrox chip on for 2D and the S3 Chrome gpu for 3D.

and it will cost more than $1200

I just think it doesn't make sense, where are they going to? do they have subsidiary brands (with lower margins) that still generate turnover for them? if they don't go ati i doubt they'll wait a year for larabee.

all in all unfounded rumours..

Yeah if the likes of XFX, BFG and EVGA defect it will really diminish Nvidia's marketing punch. Those guys live and breathe Nvidia so it will be very interesting to see them cross over.

If the price sticks then I think they could really sale those. However, to me this is a pretty good sign Nvidia just wants to keep mind share as high as possible right now and quickly move on to another chip and card.
