You're actually suggesting that ATi in about 6 months analyzed what NVIDIA did, designed their own hardware capable of same, designed a chip around it and mass produced the damn thing ready to markets?They got more complex? Everyone "copies" designs btw because you don't really have a lot of options if you want to be compatible with DX and VK/OGL. Remember S3TC? That was "copied" by everyone.
edit: and not putting my head on the table for it, but IIRC R100's pixel shader'esque capabilities were more advanced than GF256
edit2: as for S3TC, it wasn't copied by everyone, it was licensed by everyone.
