NV30- the fan will last how long, we must dust it how often?

On the subject of GFFX fan noise:

an nVidia rep was quick to suggest that it wouldn’t matter much because gamers would be using headphones during their gaming.

Say you are listening to music or fragging away with your desktop speakers, the hum of the cooling fan will still be audible since we do not all use headphones.

OMFG,, that’s just brilliant. I can't see nvidia seriously expecting gamers to wear headphones that is ridiculous and for lack of a better word STUPID. They will have something better in the end ... hopefully.

EDIT: hehe page 15!

While we couldn’t see it, the fan cooling the heat pipes was very loud – we are talking almost Delta-like volume levels. Possibly, as we get closer to seeing these cards in retail, nVidia may tweak the cooling systems to a more noise tolerable level – at least I hope so.

When quizzed by a gamer at the sound levels coming from the back of the card, an nVidia rep was quick to suggest that it wouldn’t matter much because gamers would be using headphones during their gaming. Unless the cooling technology has thermal throttling (which it very well may, mind you) I would have to disagree with this notion.

This is worse than I feared, if true. Even though my computers are far from quiet, I have never been able to deal with whine of the Delta fan. I really hope the GFFX doesn't have a high pitched whine to the fan. But, no matter what, IF it's that loud, it will really hurt sales.

Too bad Home Improvement stopped running (or maybe that is good)...other wise I could see the New Binford 35,000 GPU Cooler. Complete with a 110 horsepower motor that will pump out an amazing 300 BTU of cooling power and comes with its own set of ear plugs for a limited time only :)

When I start listening to music or playing games, or if I have just been using the computer for a little while, the sound of my delta fan (60mm 45db with an open case) is not audible. My brain is concentrating more on the music or the game then anything else.

So either way, I am not worried.

This could also mean you get a free pair of headphones with every geforcefx purchased. :)

This thread has a life of its own, and life always finds a way...
Anyway, I am sure we will find out how noisy the damn thing is soon enough... Dave, when are they sending yours?

Well, I wouldn't exactly say it isn't audible, since you are certainly still hearing the fan noise. Rather, it's a matter of "tuning out" that particular noise and focusing on the music etc., as you indicated in that last statement.

I'm sure that if you were listening to some music, and thinking that the fan wasn't audible, and then someone actually cut the fan off... you would notice an immediate difference in sound level and quality.

Fuz, I am happy to see you go your share of "The Lion King".
Umm..... I have no idea what you are on about?
Did I quote something out of The Lion King? :-?

Better would be a free visit to the ear-doctor for you

No WAY i will install something like that in my water-cooled rig. I did the water-cooling JUST for the noise-reduction... and that was wonderfull.
Never gonna go back to any lawn-mower stuff.

My brain just completely ignores the noise, if the fan was to cut off and I was busy playing a game, I would not hear it. Also, if someone knocks on the door, unless it is a very loud knock, i do not hear it as my brain blocks out everything but the game.

I used to block everything out when playing games. Not anymore...

For example, I can't use my DVD drive much anymore, because it has a high-pitched whine when it's in operation. Fortunately, I don't usually play DVD's, so I can use my CD-RW to do the reading more quietly.

I've worked with more then a couple, both box and OEM, and they most definitely did not lock in.
well, i work with hundreds of PCs at work that are slot 1's - old pentiums/pentium2's. And every last one of em, those tabs lock in. You just have to push real hard, then they click into place. I have a non-working proc on my desk at work, and for relaxation i click the tabs in and out. They DO lock in.

ack if it is a delta black label level , I for one will not buy it. I just ditched my dual tec , dual athlon pc for a single watercooled at stock speed athlon. I put the hive downstairs in the basment where only the dog has to hear it.

Slot 1 Celerons did not lock in. Getting them out was a real pain because the clips just squeezed on the sides. You needed to hold them apart get the CPU out. It wasn't possible to do it 1 handed.
