NPD November 2005

It looks like Nintendo will cash in this holiday season, good for them, they may even steal some sales from the 360 due to its (Nintendo's) higher availability. Can't wait for December's numbers.

That's amazing that over 300 k of the 360s sold. Imagine what it would have been if they would have larger supplies!

Dam did MS shoot themselves in the foot...

Xbox 191,320
Xbox 360 332,121

The low launch-week number falls short of analyst expectations of around 400,000 units being sold in the platform's first five days on the market. It also means that it is unlikely that Microsoft will meet its self-stated goal of selling 2.5 to 3 million of the consoles worldwide in three months. The console launched in Europe on December 2 and launches in Japan on December 10.

Nope, they are lossing money this holiday, but they probably like that.

Nintendo is the only one of the big three that goes plus more or less all the time. So why wouldn't they this time and when they're outselling the others for once at that?

Yes, if the yields rumour are true then they are euchred. But you never know. they could quickley catch up with their demand. Though, I suspect they would have to pull it off with mostly the European and NA markets. Japan seems to be stale to the 360. But we'll next week.

This is a message put out by NPD

It has come to our attention that the November 2005 Video Games data released today contained overstated information. Please do not use the information in your PowerView databases and/or Snapshot Reports released earlier today. NPD will remove the most recent data from the NPD Funworld website beginning 7:30pm EST.

NPD Games will review the reasons behind the overstated numbers immediately and will have an update to you by tomorrow, Friday 12pm EST. We are not clear when the new data will be reissued. However, we are making every effort to ensure the issue is resolved before re-releasing the Video Games Data.

We apologize for this inconvenience

Really? Why is that? they seem to be outselling everyone with the advance.

Because each XB360 core costs 375$ (or more I am not sure by now) and they sell it at 300, the ratio is even bigger for the premium system, so they lost at least 332kx75 ~=25M$.

But theyr are getting a user base that later or sonner will buy games enought to compensate their lost, and in the uture it will cost much than that to produce a console so they may acctual have proffits with the HW.

I don't have a link but doesn't Nintendo sell their hardware at a profit? So, off the bat with the hardware numbers provided, which is bogus now (thanks Nicked), Nintendo is in the black. MS has to make their money off of software and accessories.

Whoa. I wonder if PSP #s will drop drastically? I'm quite surprised they were so high (but I'm not basing my opinion on any data - just pure speculation).

Walmarts are not counted in NPD. For the record there were NO consoles to be find in any stores on the night of the 22nd.

The 332k number is wrong with speculation even LESS were sold. And that NPD figure is inclusive of all consoles sold within North America (so Canada as well). They use a method of extrapolation to reasonably determine what Walmart would've contributed to the figure. So its not like "heres the figure 332k, Walmart has another 68k, thats 400k".

And a definitive "no" would be wrong. There were reports from major gaming outlets of consoles available in less populated regions, like all hardware launches.

It's funny that you only call out the PSP. Why choose that one device out of all of them?

That's not true. NPD has its own Canadian branch which distributes their numbers separately. The sources used at GAF [who account for the internet leaks] only get the US NPD data. You're right about extrapolation of data for Walmart though.

Perhaps because of articles like this

I know I've seen a couple other analysts saying that PSP sales weren't going so well, although I really have no idea.

Hmmm. Yeah, must've read that wrong somewhere. I did know NPD did seperate Canadian numbers but I thought the NPD one thats being "leaked" had them inclusive.
Thanks for the tip.

It was just a feeling to be honest. I think the PSP is a damn sexy looking handheld (crushes the DS by far) but I've *always* stated that games will drive the adoption of hardware and the PSP is just lacking in that department.

Now this doesn't discount other vehicles for adoption, such as web browsing, movie watching (surprisingly far higher than I expected), and of course staying trendy with a hip device...but in the end, the PSP is primarily a gaming handheld and thus without decent games in its lineup, I expect sales to suffer.

This of course doesn't mean it's doomed, far from it. They just need to start rolling out good games (and mind you, a few have begun to trickle out).
