NPD February 2007

Orly

A bigger problem is that people aren't buying 3rd party games for the PS3. Last February, there were 6 games in the top 25 for the 360 and none of them were by Microsoft. Of the 7 games in the top 30 for Microsoft this month, 5 are 3rd party. For the PS3 to be successful, that statistic has to change.

I think you made a typo and misspelled Wii as PS3.

Fight Night 3 was #1 and Call of Duty 2 was #2. Crackdown doubled all PS3 game sales, by itself, in 8 days of work. February's big game for the PS3 was Virtua Fighter 5 and it didn't even make top 30. VF5 sold 53k in February 2007, Halo 2 sold close to 50k, in February 2007 to put it in perspective. Of the 7 games in the top 30 for Microsoft this month, 5 are 3rd party. For the PS3 to be successful, that statistic has to change.
Hmm interesting numbers. I wonder how many current PS3 owners own a 360. I think many multiplatform gamers are buying the xbox360 version (due to achievements system, earlier release, graphically better looking, established x360 online community, rumble, etc... ) and use the PS3 for the exclusives.

No, i was very right. Red Steel has done over 500k. Super Monkey ball, Rayman, and Trauma Center are all around 200k. As you can see, Rayman charted this month while Virtua Fighter 5 did not. Madden for 360 was still charting last year, like wise with Need for Speed. The 3rd best selling game for the PS3 this month was MLB2K7 and that did 32k. You are right in saying that 3rd party is overall not doing so hot, but the situation is much better than the PS3 is, because of userbase. Developers assumed, and correctly so, that the PS2 wouldn't be stopped, so in the end, everyone would grab a piece of the pie. You can't do that for the PS3 with two very strong competitors on the market.

On a basis of where to put your game as the lead platform, it places you in a quandry.

A) Try for the Wii and the emerging userbase? Nintendo fans will buy your game if the game isn't treated as an afterthought. As proven when sales of Soul Calibur 2 were highest on Gamecube. If you piss on them, don't expect them to buy your game. It remains to be seen how SSX Blur does, I wouldn't call that an AAA effort, but this is the first notable franchise to made for the Wii. I don't consider UBIs port jobs satisfactory.

b) Go for the 360 and the seemingly hive community that bounces from game to game. Ultimately, this appears great. The last 4 months of NPD, a 360 game has lead and it has sold in excess of 400k units each time. Nov + Dec = Gears. Jan = Lost Planet. Feb = Crackdown. The gravy train doesn't appear to be slowing down at all. GRAW2 should continue this trend. Console sales are steady, but nothing spectacular.

C) Make software for the PS3 and hope the brand wins out. I don't know if that is feasible currently. No one is counting the PS3 out yet, but just like people were watching VF5 and Gundam Musou in Japan, they are probably watching this month in regards to Motorstorm and F1.

We shall know a lot more come March NPD.

This is exactly what I do, that is correct.

I liked your post, but the quotet part is not true. Apparently it sold more on Cube in NA, but total sales were higher on PS2. It seems this myth doesn't die easily

Yep, you are correct. The gamecube version had the highest attachment ratio but in absolute numbers the PS2 version sold better.

Yap ! But the base is too small to compare to 360 though. May have to wait another year...

@_@ (confused by kia's numbers). I kinda LOL when everyone has a different number.

But will keep these for future references... Month by month attach ratio is based on new/recent game releases though.

Ok cool ! I thought it's LTD

For clarification, if you stop at the top 30 sales list for the 360, Wii, and PS3, that leaves you with ~206k, 185k, and 222k in games sold respectively which are unaccounted for.

That can easily be made up with games that sell anywhere from 5k-50k.
