NPD August 2007

In fact I'm almost stunned by this figures...
more than x2 for MS x3 for nintendo over ps3.

The more I think about it the less i find Nfactor's comments trollish, slightly anticipated ok.

But MS and nintendo go up while Sony go down.

I really don't how this will change till christmass, It's not about Halo III "selling 6 millions copies and selling more systems" or not, It's more what to expect about Uncharted and Ratchet?
Even if they do very well, I can't see them sell a lot sell systems / as much as Halo III and some others real appealing ms exclusive.

Sonycowboy:

"And NPD keeps on delivering, no platform breakdowns yet, but some results I'm sure everyone will be interested in.

PS3 Lair = 46.5K
Warhawk w/headset= 58.6K

IMO, quite respectable and much better than I expected for LAIR (released early and most folks didn't know it, 2-3 days of sales) and Warhawk about what I expected, given it's online only and the majority of sales came from PSN. ( 4 days of sales)"

is it really surprising though? August, MS had a minor pricecut, BioShock, Madden 08 and Halo 3 soon to be released (well not too soon, but the buzz around Halo 3 is huge). PS3 had a crappy Madden 08 and...? i don't think Warhawk/Heavenly Sword had any affect on August sales, but well see what it does for Sept.

i think its still too early to say Sony is destined for third. i think well have a much clearer picture early next year though.

for Warhawk, thats for retail boxed copies then right (since you say "w/headset")? i wonder how many they sold on PSN if that is the case. both games did pretty good considering they were released at the end of the month.

Agreed but it still hurts...
And september will be worse... likely...

I said it earlier, story will almost be told after this christmass, but for US the story seems half told no matter I hard i try to spin it, I can't see Sony doing well now in US.

Can't imagine much, considering there seems to be almost no hype for them unlike Heavenly Sword and Lair which had a decent amount.

I guess mass effect release is WAY more anticipated than both pulled together (no sure of my english on that one lol).
The same can said about PGR4.

I don't understand why you are stunned like that when PS3 has no software to sell an expensive console in August when Madden is available for PS2, as for 2007 sales you should know already what it'd be like after you saw the Sony conference for E3 2007. IMO the biggest seller in holiday 2007 will not be Uncharted or Ratchet, but GT5 Prologue.

It's a given fact that they got out of a price competition by themselves when they set the price point of PS3 2 or 3 years ago, even with an HDD, along with heavy investment into first-party software. What they are eying on is not hardware market share but what kind of services it can offer. SCE's profit in the PS2 era is not bigger than that of Nintendo's in the GC era, and Xbox 1 which did a price competition left a huge loss.

i disagree, i think they all got equal hype from the PS community. HS and Lair may seem to get more hype possibly because their release dates were sooner. i think if both games score higher in reviews, they will sell better than both Lair and HS.

I think Sony's August numbers all but guarantee the availability of a $399 PS3 SKU in the US by early November. That should prompt at least an additional $50 cut from Microsoft for the Elite and Premium 360 SKU's and a drop to $250 for the Core/Arcade SKU.

That should result in very healthy holiday sales for both Sony and MS.

You cut hardware when you have software to push it. Not to mention that Sony has to worry about undercutting the other Blu-Ray hardware makers.

yeah, and Oct. or Nov. are good times to cut the price for Sony. just before the holiday season, R&C, Uncharted, UT3, Haze, Assassins Creed, the release of PS Home and firmware 2.0 etc.... its a perfect time.

Some thoughts:

During the relative same August in their lifespans, Xbox sold 130K units at $299, and Gamecube sold 130K units at $199. PS3 sold 130K units at $599/$499. At an absurdly high pricepoint, it's doing about as well as Cube and Xbox were. Neither of those companies dropped out of the console business, and one of them even managed to not lose 4 billion dollars!

Wii owners either don't care about Madden, or they're playing it on other systems.

3rd parties aren't jumping on Wii, and they're not going to. It's not that sales are low--there aren't any 3rd party games out in the last 3-4 months worth occupying the top 10 in the first place! I think it's pretty simple: Developing for the Wii is boring as hell. Coders. producers, and artists want to do something new...program new graphics effects, develop cool new models and levels that weren't possible before, and so on. They figure if they ignore the Wii for long enough, consumers will, too, and they're probably right. When they say "Wii is a fad," it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Good point. I would think that Pioneer, Samsung Denon, et al would be unhappy with such a quickly declining price for a competing Blu-Ray player. In conjunction, I wonder if Hollywood insiders were aware of these sales numbers and have started to really doubt the PS3 as a vehicle for HDM.

Or when your hardware sales are absolutely dire 2 months before the start of the holiday season and you desperately need to get some sales momentum. Cut the price to $399 and you'll get plenty of people on board purely to buy mainstream titles like Madden, Fifa, Need for Speed, etc. There are millions of PS2 owners out there looking for a new console to buy - make the price attractive enough and the PS brand will do the rest.

And as for Sony undercutting the other Blu-Ray manufacturers, they've been doing that since day one. Nothing new there.

NPD covers music and movies too. They knew about this 4:30 Eastern time today. Every company you named is a premium company that relies on profit from their hardware. The Blu-Ray consortium will force them to hold at that price. They've already value added it in places like Amazon.com with the 8 movies. Not too much more that they can do now.
