Nokia's Present & Future

What do you mean with "tarnished"?

What I mean is that as a name brand, most consumers nowadays (at least here in the USA) think pretty highly of brands such as Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, etc. but not Nokia when it comes to smart phones and super phones. And now, just months after releasing the Lumia 900, Nokia is already slashing price in half, and word has gotten out that the Lumia 900 [Windows 7] phone will not be upgradeable to Windows Phone 8. When new customers get screwed over like that, that tarnishes the brand.

Let's wait for Thursday's announcement from Nokia before we go too far in prognosticating their future. I seriously doubt they'll give any hard numbers on unit sales, but the cash burn rate will be interesting...I expect losses well over 1 billion...

Well, it's not going to be pretty, to put it mildly.

I think the aim for them is to write off wp7 era with their cash reserves and pray that wp8 is as good as promised....I happen to think it will be....

Certainly they have to get through the next year without getting taken over or worse..bankrupt...before wp8 takes off.

They could always sell some of their vast patents...not just frand either...much more valuable essential patents...

Wp7 could be an asset as visually and experience wise it offers brand continuity to up to wp8...they will all look identical...just some features and newer apps written just for wp8 will be missing...it sucks....but I guess the experience won't be a mile away for the average consumer.

I happen to think wp8 will be a succesfull third eco system...as long as they pull their finger out and don't panic.

It actually apple which looks to have the most to lose imho.

Which is why it would be hysterical to see an Apple buy out of Nokia :)

Please don't...

Apple would destroy Nokia's camera technology and favor their own "transform into disneyland" oversaturation algorithms.

Well they would only do it to stop WP8 which would be a legitimate strategy if the price were right.

WP8 wouldn't be stopped without Nokia in the game, IMO.

Nokia is a spectacular acquisition target because of its countless patents on everything comms, everything mobile, camera tech and Navteq.

Being the world's most successful patent troll, I'm sure Apple would manage a way to turn all that into profit (or losses for its competition).

I thought patent troll was a non-practicing entity like Intellectual Ventures.

Actually, MS extracts more money from Android licensees than anyone else.

I would have some doubts whether apple would be allowed to take over Nokia...competition much ??

Besides that's not apple's style..at least under jobs...that's certainly how Microsoft rolls...they are specialists in divide and take over strategies.

By the looks of it it actually may be the best solution for both Nokia and Microsoft.....suddenly microkia has a certain ring to it..:)

Your right that is what it used to mean...the term has some what been thrown around all over the place...

Microsoft does make more money out of android...however it prefers to licence the patents amicably...rather than the disruptive court room cock blocking that apple subscribes to.

Agreed it's not apple's style, but it wouldn't be illegal unless it gave Apple an anti competitive position. For that to happen they'd have to make a play for Samsung.

Apple doesn't want to license their patents. So the other companies need to remove the features deemed to be infringing on patents.

Cock-block? Do they have some legal obligation to help their competitors compete against their products?

Just because they don't, it doesn't make it any less of a cockblocking.

And even then, I don't know how some anti-monopoly laws would stop apple from refusing to license some of their ultra-generic patents.

I've heard that if you are granted a patent, you have to enforce it -- demand that infringers license it or not use it -- or else you lose rights to enforce it against other parties in the future.

Not sure if it's true but if it is, there are all kinds of problems with the patent system and holders have little choice but to play the game.

$1.01 billion loss for the quarter. 4M Lumias (all models) sold, 600,000 total in the US.
Cash down to 4.1 billion euros (from 6.3) even after another $250M injection from MS.
At that burn rate they have six months to live.

And the investors like the result and the stock is up 18%.

LOL. It's up 18% but trading at under $2 so larger % is easier. It was up to where it was last Friday for a bit.

It went from $1.73 to $1.93 and is now slowly falling.

great news.

Yeah, all investors must really like Nokia right now because the stock is hitting the week's record price, so much love!

Aaaaaand it's gone. It just went down 5% within the last hour, lol.

I'm really shocked, actually. I thought a Finnish would be the most "passionate" critic about this whole situation (don't you know people who work for the company?), and it looks like it's the complete opposite...
What gives?
