No More 60GB PS3 in the US after July?

if SCE are moving from 60GB to 80GB because costs don't change much, how come microsoft are still on 20GB? can't microsoft themselves upgrade premium 360s to 30GB if not 40 or 60GB?

Then they would need a new SKU and they already have four. Sony is also placating buyers by exchanging 20GB for poorer BC.

That was the explanation from the Reeves interview I think. I can't imagine the ordinary folk know the difference though, nor that it bothers new buyers much even when they do know the difference. If you want full BC, you'll pick the 60GB. The extra 20GB won't be compensation for that.

What was also a bit rough was Reeves saying that the price difference between 60 and 80 GB is Eurocents. If so, why not just upgrade the HDDs through the entire lot? Europeans get to pay the highest prices, and get the smaller HDD, which would cost Sony a few cents?

I'm certain that will be done, but in the meantime the value-added package (I think an extra controller and two games) shouldn't be too shabby either. By the time Euro folk get their pricecut they will probably get that measley extra 20GB, but the two games taken away:cry:

Looks like the 80GB model will be $499 eventually as well:

Just some analysts view, but makes sense to me.

I'm inclined to believe that the bundling of MotorStorm will continue. Otherwise, there was no point in creating the SKU in the first place. Why create a new one when will be obsolete in no time? It would have been easier to just price the 80G standalone 50 bucks higher.

Sony will probably cut the price when the 60G model runs out. My hunch is that the company will try to get away with less than a hundred.

Well it should, as we've been stating such as the likely scenario since even before E3. ;)

Yes but I don't recall Pachter predicting anything correctly, so I think we may have to reevaluated the situation :).

Just a rumor, but it would be a wise move for Sony. I'm not sure how well a BC-less Ps3 would do, but as long as it's a BD player it would be a good deal for many.

I was wondering how Sony could offer a tard SKU with full PS3 game and Blu-ray support.
I decided removing backward compatibility didn't make much sense as the cost reduction wouldn't be hundreds of dollars, and two different motherboards would even mean slightly higher production costs.

However it does make some sense if they are planning a total transition to GS-less SKUs and complete software emulation is on the way (to be available later than the unit's intro to market).

Sony doesn't need a tard sku. If it can afford to offer a 40g PS3 at $399.00 then it should be able to offer the 80g PS3 at a slightly higher price.

I don't think removing backward compatibility has as big an impact on cost as some seem to believe. If it cost anywhere near $100 to offer full BC in the original 60g PS3, Sony would of been better served just gluing a Slim PS2 to the PS3 and forgetting about PS1 BC.
