No HDMI Cable with PS3

I have a question:

The Multi AV port at the back of the PS3 looks exactly like the PS2 one. Does that mean that the Component cables i used to use with my PS2 will work on PS3? I don't see why they wouldn't, but i wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 port is that 1mm too small or too big to make it fit...

The only reason i can think of is that the current cables may not support 1080p? No confirmation either way though.

That's not an issue. But why would different component cables handle or not handle 1080p? It's just 3 cables carrying analog colour and luminance information afterall, not like HDMI which can or cannot support 1080p depending on the type (or price). I thought the problem would be on the TV itself, as there aren't many (if any) TVs capable of taking 1080p from component...

It has the same number of pins, and looks pretty identical, that has to be for a reason...

IIRC, and to be honest its been awhile since ive looked at it, there are still bandwidth ratings for analog cables to carry information. If they only need to carry 1080p/30 then thats using the same bandwidth as 1080i/60, but 1080p/60 uses double and i don't know if the older cables are properly spec'd to carry the signal. Hopefully someone else can chime in here and set it straight...

Mmm... I don't know for sure, but from experience with analog stuff like VGA, the worst that can happen when trying to push a resolution that is too high for that cable (maybe it's not shieleded enough or whatever other reason), is that you start seeing little-to-big artifacts, but it still kinda works... Whereas HDMI, being digital, it either works or you get no signal...

But i have never tried that case in particular, so i'm speaking entirely by what i know of the audio/video world from experience of analog/digital differences.

All the PS1 multi cables worked on PS2 and I'd expect that to cary over. Nintendo has the same practice since the SNES.
