Nintendo Announces Dual-Screen Portable

weaty little sausages for fingers

Hehe, you make it sound so dirty!

I get your point.. but not many of us have grease dripping from our fingers when we play games. It will be interesting to see how Nintendo deals with durability if the touch screen rumor turns out to be true though.

Cool look if you ask me, but it's not a design from Nintendo. Just somebody else's imagination.

So what will it look? Nintendo's not letting anyone know until May, so we asked the gadget experts at Designworks Windsor what that'd do if they were designing the DS. Not only did they come up with this striking clam-shell affair, but they even suggested a range of colours! We're betting that the real thing will be just as good as these desings.

It's better and cleaner than other attempts, though. (Of course most other attempts were made to make fun of it. ;) ) It will most certainly have more buttons, and probably try to fit on an analog control, as 3D control is better with it, and you don't get the "new and different" gameplay they want from two screens with overly-simple button setups.

Hmm... I like the way that looks. I might purchase one and give it a whirl.

All it needs to be able to do is play all gameboy games like the GBSP does, and I'd be set. :)

Instant Messaging, Free Wireless Gaming

Nintendo embraces instant messaging?

New handheld system will feature free wireless gaming, IM capabilities.
March 16, 2004: 3:06 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – Nintendo's latest handheld system seems to be moving even further away from a pure gaming machine.

In an analyst report issued Tuesday, P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research said the upcoming Nintendo DS will offer Instant Messaging functionality. Rather than being offered nationally, though, the DS is more likely to offer local IM service, using free bandwidth with unlicensed RF spectrum (essentially, the same bandwidth that's used by two-way communication devices). Users would type messages on a touch screen using a stylus.

The addition of IM would be the second potential step for the DS to be a multimedia device. In an earlier note, McNealy revealed a two-hour movie has been successfully demonstrated on the machine. Nintendo has not confirmed any non-gaming functionality, however.

Additionally, the DS will feature free wireless gaming, McNealy wrote. Exactly what that might mean is unclear. It could be that the machine will simply allow players in the same room to play together without the need for a corded connection. (Indeed, a wireless adaptor for the Game Boy Advance is already being sold in Japan.) Conversely, Nintendo could allow friends in different locations to compete against each other or co-operatively, should the wireless signal be strong enough.

Nintendo declined to comment on the report, citing its policy of not addressing rumors or speculation.

As talk grows about the DS sporting additional functionality, interest in the system is increasing. Industry observers are curious whether the company will use the DS to go head to head with Sony's PSP, a handheld game device that offers additional multimedia functionality. Sony (SNE: Research, Estimates) in late February delayed the North American launch of the PSP until early 2005. Nintendo said it is still on track to release the DS this holiday season.

Though the PSP was originally seen as a threat to Nintendo's Game Boy, that talk has quieted in recent months as major publishers have suggested it will carry a price tag ranging from $199-$249 and software will run for $40. Neither Nintendo or its publishing partners have suggested a price point for the DS. McNealy has written that software will likely range from $20-$30.

Nintendo has tried hard to keep details about the DS under wraps, only acknowledging it would feature two, three-inch LCD screens and two separate processors. There has been tremendous speculation on how the machine will look.

McNealy's note, which cites "several [unnamed] industry sources," said the machine will have design characteristics similar to the popular Game Boy Advance SP.

The DS will incorporate the 'clamshell' look of the Game Boy Advance.
"The form factor will feature two three-inch screens that fold together, similar to that of the Game Boy Advance," wrote McNealy. "There will be two flipper controls, two directional pads, and an 'a' and 'b' button. The stylus will be used for gaming, Instant Messaging, and other multimedia functionalities."

The possible inclusion of wireless multiplayer gaming has long been rumored for the DS. Sony has reportedly dropped wireless functionality from the PSP, which could give Nintendo a leg up. (It's entirely possible Sony is still debating whether to include some sort of wireless gaming, however.)

Wireless technology likely will play a significant role in the next generation of consoles – with Nintendo's next generation machine due in 2006. If the DS does have wireless functionality, it's possible the device might be able to sync up with the new console, much as the GBA can link up with the GameCube today.

IM'ing would be funky. ^_^ Though one has to wonder how well any of these devices would handly it without a semi-functional keyboard. (Perhaps as an expansion...) Or might a touch-screen (if and when it is confirmed) also point to some kind of Graffiti-like input?

Ah well, we shall see. ^_^ With luck a lot of 3rd parties will have fun making stuff for the portables.

That concept looks cool but it can't be folded into a small package. It would be cool if the left and right sections had hinges too. ;)

Instant Messaging is what current cell phones should be already capable of, actually - and it bugs me to see that the Nintendo DS may be the first gadget to implement such a feature.

With todays Bluetooth, I really wonder why Cell phone manufacturers don't make it openly available to 'chat' with other BT cell phones. Though, I am probably betting that the reason is due to providers making the most profits through *expensive* short messages and such a instant messaging over BT would only hurt their sales. Good thing Nintendo is going for it and thus will probably attract further customers.

Back on topic though, I must admit, the DS is slowly catching my interest. Especially the fact that the screens are aligned vertically is a good thing IMO and will make for some very cool and innovative games.

what's the point chatting trough bleuthoot with somebody who is just a few meters away from you?
for messanging to work you would need some sort of wap/gprs connection going on (or wifi trough your router to internet)

i mean huh? can someone explain the functionality to me to have a icq like aplication on your portable gameconsole

This part caught my attention most:

"There will be two flipper controls, two directional pads, and an 'a' and 'b' button. The stylus will be used for gaming, Instant Messaging, and other multimedia functionalities."

So does this mean it will have both analogue and digital pads? Also, using a stylus for instant messanging seems really interesting to me, and would whup some serious butt on text messenging via the number pad on your phone. Does anyone know if PDA's allow you to do that? I've never had one, so I've never really had the chance to try it.

Also, according to the DS spec PDF which may or may not be fake, DS does feature a variant of WiFi, and so you may be able to use it via a wireless router, which could be interesting.

That part would make little sense other than with schoolkids at school (like teachers need any more distractions to deal with ;) ), but I like any option being explored... as it means other folks can expand on one functionality to give you more. If decent IM'ing of some sort were there and local, you can be sure someone else would work out a service to make it national or international so as to sell their own modules.

Offhand, probably not much - imagine though being in a club and I'm sure you'll find a few ideas at least worth exploring on. And hey, it's not as if it would take much effort to implement such features in todays cellphones - if it's technically possible... Connectivity is a cool thing all together - IM, chat or simply a hello world to near by phones (or in this case DS's). Heck, why not? :D Point is, even if most (grown up or not-single) people would barely use such a feature, I could imagine it being quite popular to those that do.

NINTENDO DS PLAYABLE AT E3

Japanese reports confirm hands-on action for the LA event, plus other Nintendo nuggets

14:36 Nintendo has confirmed that its controversial DS handheld console will be fully playable at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, according to an article in Japanese games mag Nintendo Dream.
The dual-screened console, which is believed to come complete with a touch-sensitive screen and stylus, will be fully unveiled for the first time at the LA event this May, likely accompanied by a strong selection of first-party software, offering a completely new style of play markedly different from that currently offered by GBA and GC. Well, that's what Nintendo reckons anyway... Our money's on Super Yoshi Speak 'n' Spell.

Additionally, Nintendo confirmed that software announcements for GBA and GameCube will be made in advance of E3 and that, somewhat obviously, a large number of titles will be on display at the show itself.

What is certain is that, after last year's miserable showing, where Nintendo's big announcement was a rehash of Pac-Man (which has humiliatingly ended up as a freebie with Namco products), the company needs to make a seriously big splash if it is to snatch column inches away from Sony's PlayStation portable.
