Nintendo announce: Nintendo NX

Nintendo's order volume for the game console has also been reduced. Nintendo originally planned to order 20 million units for the first year, but its shipment target is now only 9.5-10 million units. The sources believe the reduction was due to the fact that video game console market has been shrinking and concerns triggered by its Wii U's unsatisfactory shipment performance of two million units in 2015.

It's like they're already giving up.

20 million was an outrageously optimistic figure.

PS4 and Wii took 14 months to reach 20 million, and they're the fatest selling consoles of all time. PS2 took19 months to reach 20 million. Other consoles >2 years. So not giving up so much as getting real. And even then I'd say optimistic given current platform performances. Not seeing that Nintendo has a strong enough presence to really guarantee 10 million sales in a year. I think they've lost a fair bit of goodwill from fans over Wii U, let alone decrease relevance to the wider market.

Yes, but cutting the projections to half is also outrageous.
The only thing that comes up to my mind is that they weren't expecting the half-gens in 2017, which will compete with the NX even more directly than the current gens.

Welp I wonder if they'll still have to pay ahead of time or if that shifts the Nvidia contract payment to later.

Oh yeah, I was shaking my head so much that I forgot to ask the following question...

Can you really just add-on VR in 6 months while keeping the same specs?

What does adding on VR even mean? o_O Can't do much for the HW if they had already planned production. I somewhat figured "production" isn't synonymous with fabrication of chips. "Production" as in final assembly, so perhaps there's a shortage somewhere in the pipe causing a delay. Doesn't make sense not to just stock up if they can.

Their history of SDKs already left much to be desired too, so uhm... eh (as far as adding VR API or whatever).

They probably would have paid upfront for chip fab.

Maybe it's a "mobile style" VR. So they have a strap on assembly to attach the handheld to your head. :p And, uh, some kind of controllers to hook up to it.

ROFL! I kid you not, we just said that exact same thing in IRC! I think we're onto something!

If so, what VR gear does Nintendo even have? It took Sony almost 2-3yrs on development of PSVR, and its finalized specs. Unless they are partnering up with Samsung or HTC, I don't see VR in NX immediate future.

Well, lets say Gear VR already does "VR" with less specs than presumably NX will bring to bear. So it's a matter of degree I suppose.

If NX is a handheld, with a smartphone style screen, then they can buckle that to your head for VR. Heck in a way that would be a big advantage over Sony/MS systems as it wouldn't require costly additional purchases. A PS4 Neo+PSVR (and presumably the Xbox equivalent) is $800-$900+ total outlay.

Yeah, I can almost see people preferring something they could get for $300-$400 out the door over the big guns expensive offerings, even if the experience is much lesser.

All speculation of course.

If Nintendo attempts to do VR with a mobile device with Nvidia-Shield level performance than they will deal a serious blow against it. During the start of new technologies one has to be extremely careful, since bad experiences can deal serious death blows against it. Bad Nintendo VR might actually kill VR completely.
