... but it was too small? ;)
Nah.. ;) My ex-girlfriend thought worm was cuter & more appropriate as "Anaconda" would have been a tad brutal and odd. You know, "HEY, ANACONDA! Come for some tea!". Just doesn't sound right, if you know what I mean.

My name is Nick and "neeyik" is how an old Spanish flatmate used to pronounce it...sort of like "knee-yick". I've used that nick since I first started using the Internet at home, about 7 years ago.

Mine is the name I use to play quake.
I got the idea from an episode of the simpsons. Bart puts on a chicken and shouts 'Look at me Lisa, I am Baron von Chickenpants', however it wouldn't fit in the name field for Quake, so I shortened it to Captain Chickenpants.

Deepak is my real name...means "pot lamps" in hindi....these lamps are lit on Diwali (biggest hindu festivel) night by hindus all over the world...! So I am here to spread light and enlighten you people

Actually I was also thinking about Solid Snake as MGS is the "game" for me....!

Made my nickname up, often on forums I tend to just read what other posters post and I don't tend to post an awful lot. So hence :

bystander

"One who stands near; a spectator; one who has no concern with the business transacting."

LOL... that is a classic ;)

My nickname is simply "T" and some people try to guess what it stands for. Most people settle for "T the Terrorist" and once "T the Terrible", when I was younger I was really skinny and loved the A Team so my dad used to call me "Mr T" tryin to be kinda ironic and I guess this is where the T'ness has come from plus the fact that most people do not pronounce "Tahir" correctly.

It is "Dhaa-heer" in case anyone is interested :D

made mine up, when the oh so unoriginal nick i used to us (Paladin) was already taken on something.
Never looked back.

Then why not spell it Dahir? Or is the pronunciation closer to "tah-here" than "dah-here"

Dahir is Da-here and my name does not sound anything like that.

I guess that is the reason :p

Thaa is probably closer than Dhaa I guess Tdhaa is closer still.... damn linguistics!!!

The letter in Arabic to Roman English is Tha-oh-e said really fast er.. so me wrong, Thaa-heer it is.

If I can't get it right then people that don't use Arabic/Urdu/Farsi in their daily lives must have a bit of a nightmare.

Conversely I am really, really bad at some Russian/Ukranian surnames (embarassingly so on numerous occassions). In fact sometimes I have problems with Anglo-English words.. try saying 'phenomenon' a few times with a mouth full.. it's not pretty!

funny... at my Uni, there was a female CS student called Pascal. (The daughter of one of the lecturers... what a cruel guy).

As for my nick, it's a random subset of letters from my real name

I was playing Homeworld Cataclysm at a lan and all the regular colours where chosen, so I went with brown. Which ended up in me having a wonderful flow of, well, a poo looking substance trailing behind all my ships, I was then on know as Mr Sh*t. I censored the name a bit for the sake of the little kiddies ( more like the mommies who get pissed though ;) )

Typical long-winded post

Hmm...when I was very young, and first started playing computer role playing games, I created a set of names that I felt exemplified the characteristics of how I pictured different classes.

Two of them I identified with myself at the time: one with my physical nature (always been an athletic type nerd), one with my intellectual nature (typically, the wizard...my clearest memory association with this is Bard's Tale).

Later, in my early favorite activity of conceptual game design (always looked at games wondering how I could do things better, and still do), one of those names lent itself to be the foundation of the naming convention unique to a particular game concept. As a result, that name has always been more of a "Role Play" name for me ever since.

The other name was "demalion", and I've used that for about everything "online" ever since the beginning.

No, it doesn't have anything directly to do with "tatterdemalion" in actuality, but as a big reader (who even read the dictionary for fun when younger still  <-my badge of geekiness), the meaning of that word does have some direct bearing on the thoughts that were going through my head when choosing the name (though I have no clear recollection of actually sitting down and reading it as I do for some other words). A favorite practice of mine was trying to figure out the meaning of words, and what I came up with then for "demalion" seems to have suited my thinking.

tatterdemalion : A person wearing ragged or tattered clothing: ragamuffin, scarecrow.

One explanation (from the distance of many years from the actual choosing): a person wearing tattered clothing is sticking to "it", persisting in adversity. A "demalion" is someone who succeeds in overcoming that adversity...and can therefore go without the "tatter". Alternately, the person that was always there... when you ignored the tatters they were wearing.

No, it was never meant to be "Dema-Lion" or "Demi-Lion", but the "Lion" part is usually associated with positive attributes that are somewhat related, which is why I don't really mind that mangling too much. A Dema-Lion would also be much easier for avatar conception, as well. :p

"Proper" pronunciation for anyone wondering is like "dee-MAL-yun" or "dee-MAL-eey-en".
