Typical long-winded post
Hmm...when I was very young, and first started playing computer role playing games, I created a set of names that I felt exemplified the characteristics of how I pictured different classes.
Two of them I identified with myself at the time: one with my physical nature (always been an athletic type nerd), one with my intellectual nature (typically, the wizard...my clearest memory association with this is Bard's Tale).
Later, in my early favorite activity of conceptual game design (always looked at games wondering how I could do things better, and still do), one of those names lent itself to be the foundation of the naming convention unique to a particular game concept. As a result, that name has always been more of a "Role Play" name for me ever since.
The other name was "demalion", and I've used that for about everything "online" ever since the beginning.
No, it doesn't have anything
directly to do with "tatterdemalion" in actuality, but as a big reader (who even read the dictionary for fun when younger still
<-my badge of geekiness), the meaning of that word does have some direct bearing on the thoughts that were going through my head when choosing the name (though I have no clear recollection of actually sitting down and reading it as I do for some other words). A favorite practice of mine was trying to figure out the meaning of words, and what I came up with then for "demalion" seems to have suited my thinking.
tatterdemalion : A person wearing ragged or tattered clothing: ragamuffin, scarecrow.
One explanation (from the distance of many years from the actual choosing): a person wearing tattered clothing is sticking to "it", persisting in adversity. A "demalion" is someone who succeeds in overcoming that adversity...and can therefore go without the "tatter". Alternately, the person that was
always there... when you ignored the tatters they were wearing.
No, it was never meant to be "Dema-Lion" or "Demi-Lion", but the "Lion" part is usually associated with positive attributes that are somewhat related, which is why I don't really mind that mangling too much. A Dema-Lion would also be much easier for avatar conception, as well.
"Proper" pronunciation for anyone wondering is like "dee-MAL-yun" or "dee-MAL-eey-en".
