Nickname Origins

Mine is just my username assigned to me at school, and I couldn't shake it. c=Chris, overmye=most of my last name (Overmyer), truncated by them.

Like Russ, I guess I figured I'm a big enough boy to use my real name. Not that those of you that don't, aren't, mind you...

Of course, playing games is different. I'm a CounterStrike holdover, I admit. My handle on CounterStrike is "Dr_Phil". So if you run across Dr_Phil and he's running around spraying a very large portrait of Dr Phil all over everything, that's me. :D

My recent addiction, however, is BF 1942 and the Desert Combat mod, too. I'm OVIE there, a nickname given to me in school.

-Chris

I say "Fie!" on you RealNamers, and here is why. Scroll up for the reasons for my comments. I just don't happen to have the temerity to think I'm the only with the rights to my real name...how do you like them apples, Mr./Ms. "big enough"? :p

Of course, some people really do have names rare enough to lend themselves to such an assumption, depending on a modicum of luck...but not being one of those people: I resent them all! :devilish: *

*Disclaimer: The aspersions thrown about freely in the above post were not meant at all seriously. That's not to say they weren't meant, though, if you catch my drift.

:p  RealNamers!

heh, well first off as you can tell by the spelling of the name it isn't my own. I noticed the misspelling after creating the profile. No matter though.

I don't know why I picked the name Sebastian for sure. Every time I hear the name though it reminds me of the lowly genetic enginer in Blade Runner and his little robots that sang "To Market, to market, to buy a fat pig, Home again, home again, jiggety-jig. To market, to market to buy a fat hog, Home again, home again, jiggety-jog. jiggedy jig"... lol.

Often I say "home again - home again jiggety- jig" when I get home... Mayby I have some sort of deep set psycological association with the charactor..

Man ... that isn't cool. Course I never claimed to be too cool. ;)

Well, I used to post at the IG# boards at first, so I chose a not-so-serious game character based name. It is the union of Zidane from the character Zidane Tribal of FFIX, and of Strife from Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII. Although from time to time I do lie and say it's because "Cloud1strife was taken" at other boards.

The 1 is just there because I thought a number was appropiate... and I've remained/sticked with the name throughout the many boards/sites I've frequented since, in order for my friends to easily identify me.

mine is my real name , french version of oliver. Other nick i used was lank ( no sense at all :D ) and mostly shadow for gaming (qwtf). I used shadow the first time because i just retired from a game and i wanted to join a new clan "iconito".

Mine's a bit obvious isn't it? :D
Also used the nicks "Morden" and "the_wretched" various times (the former is also my UDIC name, the later was my CS nick when I still used to play). I have developed a habbit of using nicks based on either twisted, evil or tragic characters (just don't dig those shiny hero figures), or base them off music I like.
Somehow this topic reminds me - time to change the signature...

/me takes note and decides to change his nickname to dimalion to avoid this sort of confusion.

A long time ago, I answered a similar question when 3dfxgamers interviewed me. My answer was :

"It's just something I came up with during the GLQuake days... everyone had a nick when playing online. I feel I should get one too. I was thinking about what nick to use while actually playing a multiplayer GLQuake game with my real name when I saw the Bible (that belongs to my wife... no, I'm not a Christian, neither is my wife... wife got the Bible because she felt it was a great storybook) and hit upon the idea...

BTW, it’s just “Reverendâ€￾… not “The Reverendâ€￾. The latter makes me feel uncomfortable, don’t know why."

Does "Father Tan" make you uncomfortable too?

Plagiarist!! :p

MechWarrior 2 name... and I don't know where it came from. Except the Great Void opened only by insane amounts of caffeine ;)

I chose L233 because I feel that this random sequence of letters and numbers looks nice. It really does not mean anything.

Mine comes from the days when I was part of the C64 and Amiga "scene" doing 6502 and 68000 assembly.

I found a few of my old intros on some old games, you can use VICE to see them here

DemoCoder intros

Back then, I was known as Mandrake. These intros demostrate some of the effects I was experimenting with, namely pseudo-3d raster effects. In one intro, for Conquest (on Emily Hughes Soccer) I had sprites moving over and underneath raster bars that were stable on both NTSC and PAL systems using a particular trick for the VIC video chip (only required a few lines of code and was totally timing insensitive) that I believe I was the first ever to discover. (just try timing 8 moving sprites overtop a border raster)

On another, Marauder2, I demostrate a pseudo-3d rolling circle of rasters that move behind and in front of text. I think this was also a first in the US scene.

In any case, the intros are nothing artistically, mainly just testbeds for new effects I was trying to create.

I also did some intros for FBR and LEGEND but I can't find them anywhere. And none of my demos seem to exist anywhere either. US demoscene was much smaller than Europe, and people here were relatively apathetic about collecting US demos it seems. I guess I should have attached them to games :)

Well my forum name is pretty obvious and boring... I do use "PikaTsju" when playing online... the misspelling is for legal reasons  Don't ask how I came to use it...
