Next Xbox already in planning

Microsoft EMEA veep Chris Lewis says the company is already working on its next next-generation console because "we have to".

Preliminary work is already under way, he told UK games site Kikizo.

"You can't sit back on your laurels in this business - the consumer won't let you, the developers certainly won't let us. So that's happening right now," he said.

The research and development practices of the console division are "no different than any other part of Microsoft" though, he insisted.

The news that Microsoft is already working on an Xbox 360 successor won't come as much surprise, mind - having been last to market with its first Xbox, the company was first to market in the next generation.

"You'll see more over time - certainly we're not talking about the next version yet," Lewis added, continuing to not talk about it, "so give us a chance to catch a breath, will you?"

Coming soon, presumably: "Nintendo going for another Wii. 'You can only hold it for so long,' a spokesperson commented as he dashed past."

I don't think it 's a good move for MS to speak about nex next gen so early.
I'm sure a lot of anti ms guys will think : MS want a for 4 years lifecycle...

Anyway for gamers it's a good new, MS will spend at least 5 years thinking and working on their future design.
And if the xbox360 turn to profit they will never let Sony come on the market with a more powerfull hardware.

MS wants a "3 year" life cycle. :p But in all honesty, just have to wait and see how they handle this. I really hope they don't rush it again and kill the 360 like they did the original. I'd hate to see the day where consoles upgrade so often, but receive so few benefits from it, that it's basically like buying a new PC every year or two. :(

I'd bet for a 4 year life cycle, they're kinda trying to achieve with Sony what Reagan achieved with IDS and USSR, I guess.
It seems quite early, though, dx10 gpu are not available yet, and I don't know much about cpus but most firms are still upgrading their dual core or making them quadri...
I'm perfectly ok with a 4 year life cycle, I've never kept a console that long, and it's 100 $ a year, same as playstation but you get a newer, better hardware faster. i like that.

Id expect Sony to be doing the same thing with PS4 anytime soon.

Most likely they are already having the development of PS4 in plannig stages like microsoft is having theyrs. It will remain there for loooong time, I doubt it would do much good to plan on the hardware at this point because in 4-5 years the hardware we have is so outdated that it feels like the 80s.

Probably just contract negotions with chip makers and establishing/restablishing partnerships. I wouldn't be surprised if intel or Amd get into the next next gen in some major facet. I suspect it's mostly thinktanking of what a 2009-2010 console will be.

My crystal ball says.....

4 gigs of ram @ 1.4 ghz UMA (ram usually mutiplies x8 between gens)
64mg embedded video ram
Possibly no fixed gpu/cpu but a massive cell like processor with software renderer. Like the rumored ps3 design. Probably of intel design. Probably symetric SPU's with more logic, 8-12 megs of cache.
Non-mechanical solid state storage to replace hard drive.
Full game purchases over online service.
30+ gig game sizes.
Game media = who knows.
1 trillion flops :)

I'd say we won't be seeing a new console from MS or Sony til late 2011 at earliest. I think you'll find as MS and Sony spend more and more on their consoles (R&D and initial losses) they'll likely want longer and longer cycles -- we may get a Wii refresh in 3-4 years though... who knows.

We also might find that MS and Sony switch to the Wii method (slight power increases but lower cost) depending on how successful Wii is and how Sony/MS do. Any planning done at this point is likely very flexible and will be for another year or two.

I totally disagre with you. I'd really bet on a 4 year life cycle, with the 2010 mention as a way to reinsure consumers that are still waiting to buy it. To me, Ms purpose is to spend so much money Sony won't be able to follow and might have to take a different path, just as Nintendo's.

I think any talk about "next next gen" is more an indication of how much language is eroding and washing away into stupidity. I think the illness was invented when marketing/pr people started using "next gen" as an adjective.

Here's a hint: "next gen" actually means it's not out yet. Now imagine some time passing, if you can do that, and "next" eventually becomes either "current" or "cancelled". In the case of Microsoft it became "current". It does not stay "next" forever!

Unless Microsoft sees a healthy market share early they will launch a new one just as early as they did with the 360, if you can´t beat the competition might as well bleed them to death.

Yep, that's exactly as I see it. Or even worse, Ms wants to bleed Sony to death anyway because they can afford it and it's the easiest way to end up dominating the market

MS could also "Dreamcast" themselves by launching early. Probably very few developers would be willing to stomach a platform change in 2009 and the associated huge development cost increases.

Everything MS has done and said with/about the 360 leads me to believe they're quite finished with bleeding. As long as MS is making money on the 360 and doesn't sell less than they did with Xbox, then they'll prolong this gen as long as possible (both of those should easily happen). It's ridiculous to think they'll go for a 4 year cycle again. It'd be financially irresponsible to engage in another ~2billion dollar dump in 4 years, just to try to beat Sony, when they can just as easily grow slowly (MS has said this is a long term battle). The benefit of being microsoft is that they can outlast anyone... they aren't necessarily in any hurry.

They could have ended this early if they wanted to dump a couple billion extra within the next 5-6 years (which is what they'd be doing launching their new console in ~4 years vs ~6). Just dump a billion at various publishers and they'll pony up exclusives like crazy and they could win NA, and EU easily and maybe still have a small fight in JP.

I think people overestimate MS' interest in spending lots of money.
