Next gen consoles: hints?

passerby

There should be some details floating around already in the dev community that are not covered in press releases....

In particular for Sony's next-gen console which may require more learning relative to the others. If it is trying for a end-2005 Japan launch, some dev team must already know something by now - it's nearly 2004!

So... any hints?

I'm not asking people to break an NDA or anything, just a hint, or a rumour...

I'll even settle for any PSP details. :p

There are a ton of rumors. Most though are false and they are just people making crap up.

Rumors are never good to listen too as the announced product never lives up to it .

Case in point. With the ps2 the rumor was that it could to 60 million polygon persecond in game. We later found out this was a peak number and the closest its come is around 20 million. So I feel its a good thing there aren't many rummors floating around .

PS3 is still atleast 2 years a way (possibly more) so they have plenty of time to work with developers.

From fanbois, yeah. From Sony, no way. But we don't need to get into this story again do we...

Did you actually read what I wrote .

I said rumor was. Not sony said. If sony announces official specs its no longer rumor .

This thread is about rumored specs leaked from devs. And I responded that its not a good thing and gave a reason why.

Rumors and hints, eh?

Wow.. Nice concept pix.....

JVD, i was merely "assuming crash position"... It wasn't meant as a counter-attack on you... look at it as a complement to your statement...

See that's not how it works. Part of the "fun" of this game is that we aren't supposed to give hints. :p

And I'd like some PSP details myself, thank you very much. I'd prefer a devkit even, but that's just me.

Chryz,

Those pics are so obviously FAKE I can't believe you'd even bother to link to them. Look at the buttons on the controller thingy, they're located so far down on the controller there's no way you can press them with your thumb while still holding the controller properly.

Also, the console itself is way too small for something of the PS3's level of power. Where do you fit the monster power supply and heatsink that beast is going to need?

Third, I don't believe Sony would go with a joypad connector looking like those. Much too big and fragile-looking. I'm thinking a round plug this time a la N64/Gamecube. Sony doesn't need nine pins to do the job properly, four is quite enough.

Yes, I know ... but I still like the design and the nature of this pictures kinda fits the nature of this thread.

Jeeeez Grall lighten up, they're just concepts!! ;)

Passerby, there was a big interview with Kutaragi Ken, regarding Play Station 3 & Cell Architecture. You seem to have some japanese skills, if you missed my series of threads a few month ago ... here you go:

Ken Kutaragi: PS3 Route To Realization

Kutaragi Ken: "True character of PS3 & Cell" (September 1, 2003)

Kutaragi Ken: "Relation Between Cell & PS3" (September 8, 2003)

Kutaragi Ken: "Cell Computing In RealTime Ops" (September 9, 2003)

Kutaragi Ken: "WAN Cell Computing" (September 12, 2003)

It's not really the developer details you requested, but it's better than nothing ...

8) If only I could believe they were concepts, because the console itself looks rather sexy with the round shape, slot loading and mirror finish (though I prefer the tower design of PS2 myself because it takes up less space). Problem is, they merely seem to be fan pics from some random internet guy with access to a 3D rendering program and the knowledge of how to use it...

Thank you ChryZ for the links.

Interesting observations:

1) Ken Kutaragi is a good speaker. There's a lot of what engineers call "marketing talk".

2) IBM will play a significant role in the development of OS/software for Cell.

3) A funny thing. The interviewer pointed out that developing applications with Cell will be challenging. Kutaragi replied that it will be "interesting", but will not be a nightmare, actually using the English word "nightmare". Of course how true this is, I guess we will find out whenever any dev comes in this forum with a rant.

Could be some hints for the XBox II....

Read the article yesterday, and i must say i'm very excited with Longhorn and DXnext coming into shape... slowly but i'm still young i can wait! ;)

The new nintendo system will most likely be the value version of whatever the r500 turns out to be with and an extremly fast power pc chip . IT will also have a die shrunk gamecube put into the system. It will be able to read the gamecube discs and special dvds .

At least thats what i've been told. Dunno how true it is.
