bandwidth?

So were they reserving bandwidth that we didn't know about, or is it just a side effect of the GPU time slice being released, so the accessible bandwidth is improved by the same amount?

My assumption was that he meant GPU time, not memory bandwidth. Any GPU processing would use bandwidth to memory though, but I'd assume the system stuff would use DDR3, not ESRAM.

Well if you want to ensure multitasking, you not only want to cpu/gpu reserves but you also want to reserve some ddr3 memory bandwidth so devs don't saturate it stalling your app in the background. Many XO/PS4 would use up every last drop of ddr3 memory bandwidth, so much is bandwidth bound these days, which is why Hybrid memory cube can't come soon enough, and many devs want even more memory bandwidth than is available to them on either system.

There was talk of the sdk updates making it easier for developers to make more optimal use of the esram. (not saying that esram is being reserved for nongame functions)

As the SDK matures, I would expect to see more non-latency/non-critical items to operate in unified RAM to really free up that space for things that actually require intense usage of ESRAM.

They could be looking at usage patterns and seeing what they can get away with in terms of timing maybe even offload some things traditionally done on the GPU back to the CPU and vice versa - and place additional pressure on their move engines to ensure the data is all sitting in their right places without bogging down the CPU and GPU to do it.

I guess having said that, the biggest difference between X1 and PS4 in this regards, is that with PS4 you didn't need to worry where your stuff sat, you just needed enough bandwidth to do it. And with X1, they actually need to make hard decisions for all games on what memory should go where and when.

I would be very surprised if the GPU reserve was touching the ESRAM.

deadlines trump all. I have friends on the Windows team that lent me an ear that engineers from all areas were being pulled together to help launch X1, and it was like that for nearly a month before X1 launch working non-stop.

Considering the above, I would be shocked if X1 was released in an optimal state.

Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transmitted over a unit of time. So, if the game code could only use the GPU 90% of the time, wouldn't it be maxed out at 90% of the bandwidth connected to it, be it DDR3 or ESRAM?

That was more with the online state of affairs, and they did have to do a ton of work after all to reverse some things? Boyd touched on this a few weeks back I think. Anyway, we will know soon enough what small or large gains are to be seen. Not to mention little moves like this do show us (IMO) that what is on the silicon is what we pretty much know it to be. I still wanted this console generation to be mineral oil bathed monsters with triple stack dGPU's fed by liquid nitrogen. Sigh... ;)

Maybe it will be a short generation to gear up for VR capable forward compatible machines in three or four years. Putting aside the whole 10-year comments I guess.

Reality is that Ryse looks good, so I am sure many more games will look good.

It would be just like the PS2 but instead of not having the ability to save games out the box you won't have the ability to even play a game out the box.

It would be like selling a car with no fuel tank.

A couple of words got left off my post .... And a game

New Xbox one dashboard loaded here.

As soon as it was installed (268 megs or so?), the two free Games with Gold titles I downloaded earlier finished their install.

Looking through the options, what I'm liking so far is the following:
Auto account signin
Discrete IR codes for TV and audio receiver!

I still need to do some research to see which external hard drives work best. It supports up to 2 external USB 3 drives.

hmmm ;) from my understanding and interpretation of what I was told when I asked about it prior to launch; I will say that the group of engineers and programmers at MS are extremely talented to have completed the amount of work that they did in the time frame that was available to them.

New X1 + Kinect comes with Kinect Sports Rivals?

Tell us more about the discrete codes... I found them for my TV and receiver earlier. How is it different now?

Should be a no brainer. However that box sports a Pegi 12 label, which means it's Europe, and all kinds of bundling is common in Europe. So I'm not convinced this is a worldwide or standard thing yet. But it probably is and is a good move.

The Kinect bundles currently come with Titanfall or Forza 5. I guess the difference is now you'll want to aim Kinect at families, as it was with 360. So KSR fits that bill, while core gamers would rather have a standard game.

In the power settings section you can select what signal it sends, Toggle or On or Nothing for power on, or Toggle or Off or Nothing for power off. This is done at a device by device level.

Previously it only had Toggle or Nothing.

They do not yet allow you to specify your own macros or IR codes, but its the next logical step in the remote control realm.

Not only that, you can send two power off commands to your projector. So this is great as I no longer have to go grab the remote or wait for the auto-shut off. Now all I need is the ability to say another voice command "Xbox Standby" or something when I don't want the projector to turn on and only plan to stream music. Guess I should add that idea to the preview forums while I am thinking about it.

Btw, can you record a gameplay without kinect voice command? Is there any news for at least mic only add on for X1?

You can enter IR codes manually in the troubleshooting section.

They reorganized sections. The only codes I see being able to enter in are for the make/model. Perhaps I had not gone through the revamped setup far enough to get to a point where you say you can enter in the actual IR code for OFF or ON or Channel up or the like. The only code entry I have ever seen is in place of the make and model, such as CB1FF as a shortcut to my set top box for cable.

What they should have is IR Learning mode for Kinect and IR macro recording for Kinect. You simply point the original remote at kinect, start learn mode, hit your desired keys on original remote, then stop learn mode when you're done. Then the Xbox analyzes what was sent to it to turn it into proper codes when its to use that later.

Oddly, what Windows Media Center allows. It prompts you to press a few buttons, and then helps determine what box it has to control. Haha (I am going to go cry in the corner with Eastmen again, brb)
