New PS4 Smell

So does anyone know if Sony will patch in the ability to play videos off external USB drives?

As that's a major use of my PS3 and I can't trade it in and get a PS4 until it has similar functionality...

RenegadeRocks do you mean that used trick to download a pkg on pc and feed it to console then?

Yea, thats what I do for everything on the ps3.

I will try again today, as of yet, my ps4 downloads at speeds which are a few kbs per second,w hich is meaningless. I tried with a c able and wireless, tried on other devices, other devices download fine, but not the ps4. I even put it in my router's DMZ but stillt he same meaningless speed.
Haven't played anything yet on it  ! Trying to get my hands on KZ but its very hard now that I didn't buy it with the console.

But. I am clueless on this speed issue ! Why wouldn't the ps4 download on 4mbps ???

PS4 has arrived :D ! It launches tonight in our country but this guy gave it to me earlier.....now the bad news, ps4 is downloading at less than 256 kbps  T_T ! I have a 4 mbps connection, WTF SONY !!!!!

4mbps translates to theoretical maximum 500KB/s.

Time to get a new connection mate

4mbps means 1.6gb per hour, am getting that speed on my PC and ipad, but not on my ps4. My ps4 is asking me to wait 7 hours for a 450 mb file. The town I live in I cn get 8mbps max as I am not in metro city anymore. I can make do with the 4mbps, if only my ps4 would download at that speed

I feel your pain! On my connection, even with SNR trickery, I max out at ~180Kb. If I need to down load anything sizeable I do it on an external work server and then grab it via works 20Mb satellite link.

Hey thanx scf , changing the dns from google's dns to 4.2.2.1. and 4.2.2.2 actually helped :D ! Now I am getting better speed and downloaded Resogun directly n the ps4 and it worked :D ! Downloading BF4 now !

Wow, now i am getting almost full speed :) ! Ain't that weird, there was no chance of putting that dns in the settings if not for that post on gaf spotted by scr. I would have sulked to eternity !

That's why I run my own local DNS server. Saves me a lot of aggravation!

Sorry guys, but is this DNS thing something mere mortals like me should be worrying about? Surely I can just connect it to my home wifi and get the speed I need?

You'll probably be OK. You would only have to worry about this if you had a problem connecting normally.

Back to shit speed again after downloading just 3 gbs :devilish: !!! It is showing me 30 hours for just 3 gbs .

What do i do now? How does one find the best DNS value for him?

EDIT: I have some good things to share too like the multitasking surprised me completely when I found KZ to be still running where I left it when I logged out, logged in to another user, went to the psn store, started the download of Resogun, logged back in to my own id and clicked X on KZ !! It was a pure wow moment ! But this in ability to download on a connection that is perfectly fine otherwise is really killing all my happiness !

If you do traceroute to zeus.dl.playstation.net you will see that it goes do different servers, based on some reason we do not know. So you will be hostage to which akamai server you will be pointed to and its location.

If you look at my tracepaths below, they are taking right after one other, ie I issued the next command when the former finised

I assume all servers does not have all content either, so they might have to fetch from some master server unless somebody already has downloaded it from your server once.

If you look at the last tracepath, it stops at my ISP, question whom other than me, have a PS4 and is a customer of this ISP?

Impressive. Having local PSN mirror is good :)

Sorry guys, but is this DNS thing something mere mortals like me should be worrying about? Surely I can just connect it to my home wifi and get the speed I need?

Many content providers have regional servers and services and the IP resolved by DNS will determine which regional hub or cache you connect to. As such, if you're in Bulveria using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google's Public DNS servers) for DNS resolution you may get some NA based IP for Netflix, for example (that's just a guess for this example). That's obviously very bad for your local experience as you don't want to be streaming video content half way around the world if you can help it. So, you're safest bet is to use whatever DNS your ISP has provided you. This will more than likely be assigned via DHCP along with your public IP, unless you have a static IP in which case your ISP's DNS will have been provided to you in documentation along with your IP information.

For example, for my home network I run an internal DNS server. All of my home devices point to them (I run 2 for redundancy) for DNS. However, those internal DNS servers need to forward DNS queries for anything outside of my local domain to a DNS server that has the appropriate records (this is a recursive lookup). I can either use root hints or point to another server that can take it from there. If I use Google or OpenDNS for that forwarding server chances are I won't run into the DNS outages I've seen with some of my local providers. But there's also a chance I won't get the optimal server for the various services I use. So, if I use my local ISP's provided DNS servers I'm more likely to get a more geographically appropriate IP for whatever service I'm trying to connect to. I'll also probably get faster query resolution time overall, which may or may not be noticeable for general web browsing.

Long story short, stick to your local ISP's DNS servers unless you're willing to experiment and troubleshoot. Your ISP servers are what you likely have by default unless you've changed your DNS settings. If you're running a local DNS server, stick to your ISP's for forwarding although root hints might work just as well (I haven't actually tested root hints when it comes to CDNs or other services).

Yes, but the question still remains, is the stuff I want to download on there? :)
And there is no guarantee that I will get connected to that one, I could also endup being connected to one of those in Stockholm :)

To make matters worse, my ISP, services business customers mainly and very few consumers, so I could actually be the only one with a PS4 in their network :)

I determined the servers I have better speed with, and put them statically into router settings. So for example zeus always resolves to the same IP I have set.
