New PS4 Smell

Luckily, my sticks have not been wearing in to that degree. In fact, none of my DS have ever shown this extend of wear and tear. I do have to admit though, that I am not a fan of the 'indented' sticks. I much prefered the rounded tops of the DS3. It's a minor quibble though.

I'm not too sure about the indented tops either. It brings back memories of the dreaded 'playstation thumb' from the PS1!

I also prefer the rounded tops of the DS3.

The sticks on my old DS3 did also get worn out pretty badly. But that took years, not months. I wonder if there will be an official responds from Sony. The issue seems common enough.

Do the thumbstick tops pop off like DS3's? If so, should be easy enough for someone to make replacement convex tops (or even swap over DS3 tops?).

You can get them on Amazon already. Not sure if they are replacements or fit over the current ones though.

Bro in law had the same tear problem. Amazon sent an additional new controller for free.

He also bought 10 of those replacement sticks quite cheaply, and already replaced the one in the old controller (apparently very easily).

I have actually completely worn the top of one of my sticks off. I think Resogun is to blame. I couldn't find replacement covers though. Can anyone link me to a set?

I liked the concentrically beveled convex top of the Gamecube controller's main stick, but was never much of a fan of sony's flat convex tops. It felt like I'd slip off while playing, and I had to re-adjust periodically in a way I didn't have to with nintendo's stick.

I've had this with my L1 button a bit while playing Pinball specifically / exclusively (which of course uses those two buttons a lot). If I change the angle just slightly with which I press the button, the problem goes away again, so it's easy to deal with. But yeah, it does happen to more people, I've seen it mentioned here and there and came across that quick fix video before (though didn't look at it yet, as it hasn't bothered me too much yet).

Exact same experience here.

Cheers

Yup, thats the issue, but its on R1 for me.If I wrap my finger around it and press it from the Left side, it doesn't get stuck but the natural pose is obviously from the right for R1. I wasn't bothered much earlier, had issues with spotting in BF4 but now when I am playing Warframe, then R1 is the sword attack which has to be tapped rapidly for melee attacks....so it feels wrong when the button doesn't pop back out.

I will see if I can live with it, cos here we don't have prompt replacements or 30 day money back guarantee or anything like that. Most prbly, Sony will ask me to send back the whole console which I am not interested in, considering I have downloaded a lot and the issue seems to be affecting a lot of others too. There's no guarantee the next controller won't have the issue.

I am loving the new stick top. I never had any issue with the DS3, but my hands love the DS4 completely. Going back to DS3 feels unnatural now, including the convex stick tops.

I agree about the DS4. My hands love it, also. For me, the DS3 always felt unnatural, though. ;)

I don't get that at all! What you mean from the left side?

I'm guessing he's curving his finger and using his fingertip to press the leftmost portion of the surface of the button instead of using the whole top portion of his finger above the second knuckle to press the entire surface of the button.

Edit: LOL - seems I got it.

Do you play shooters? I have found that with the indented sticks, it's harder to get a smooth progressive movement because at some point, your will either be moving the stick by touching the edge of the stick to when you might be sealing it with your thumb (i.e. when you move the stick towards the thumb as opposed to away from it).

If you have a convex form, this happens less because moving the stick towards and away from your thumb gives you a more or less consistent hold of the stick.

Don't get me wrong, I find the DS4 to be by pretty much all accounts a better controller than the DS3. That's my only real gripe with it and this little detail (while you can get used to it) is quite noticable when you play shooters competitively (especially twichy ones, like CoD or BF4) where every micromovement on the stick will have a larger impact on your precision on screen.

I mean I extend my right finger, wrap it around the R1 button and press it from the 'other' side with my finger tip. Normally I just press it and my finger is only on half of the R1 button. Any better? :p

Not really... you either have very large or very small hands, can't decide. I need a video!

In convex form I *never* feel like I have a consistent hold of the stick. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I have PS4 for few days and my experience is quite mixed, sure it is upgrade in performace but everything else is step backward from PS3. It looks like PS4 is just gaming console and not much more.

My biggest problems so far:

- PS4 rely too much on HDMI EDID information, they should let users decide what video/audio output they want (just like on the PS3)

- Video Output Settings - Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Range - Full doesn't work. Blu-ray playback is always in Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Range - Limited.

I'm sure I've read that the Blu-ray RGB space is limited, i.e. only within the 16-235 range.

yes and how this is relevant to PS4 not being able to translate video levels (and ignoring its own settings), when PS3 does it without a hitch.
